I really look at nirvana as one of my biggest influences, I wouldn't want to repeat Nirvana though, or try to bring grunge back. I mean, the music today is shit because of the money involved, but eventually (at least I hope) people will get sick of it, if not we are doomed forever. We should write songs about femine, boyish hair cuts and fucking facebook trolls...
yeah i know, people will take any excuse to fight over the internet. mostly because it's anonymous, and in real life they don't stand up for themselves. lol oh soo clever calling you a "tool" for talking about tool! haha man people need to just take into consideration what you meant, not what you said.
yeah the verse chorus verse, loud/quiet dynamic is similar. it was used before nirvana, but nirvana really made it popular..actually thanks to the pixies we have that formula in nirvana. tool does have formula's like that, but it also steers away from it in other songs. a prime example is Third Eye for the quite/loud. and yes, they tend to be extremely abusive.
this song is about a family in aberdeen where the parents locked the kids in a room, left newspapers for them to shit and piss on, and rarely fed them. the police finally got involved, kurt read it in the newspaper, and decided to write a song about. read the lyrics and it'll make sense.
This is the only semi-complete version of this song I have ever seen. If you ever doubt that Kurt was really a genius, just ask yourself: Who else could write this song?
never sounded the same with the other drummers really (including dave, the one or two versions ive heard with him arent that good, better than chads though, his arent all that special tbh)
Well, basically, Kurt turns his guitar and amp (gain and master volume) all the way up and stands really close to the amp, thus producing the screeching feedback noise.
But even if these kids have only known -say- in utero, it's ok. Even if you don't like it, In utero is still Nirvana. Managers and producers "touched" the music, yes, even Kurt admitted they had sold out, but their music is still good. To me, Very Ape and Downer are equally good. Period.
i agree. i see these kids wearing shirts with kurt on the front and nirvana printed in huge letters, and yet they still listen to this pop punk crap like fall out boy and panic at the disco. you just want to ask them, hey, do you even know what that shirt you're wearing represents? its a new era, a change in music as we know it, a movement that changed an entire generation. but they'd probably just say 'well i heard the lead singer blew his brains out, thats pretty wicked.' pathetic.
yeah it was something new. Cant really define it..What you can define tho is the punk roots among others, and the ideology that came with it. But all i see in the video comments everywhere are people who would kill to have kurt's autograph..lol
yup. sad. one day in the foyer at my school i was sitting around playing what i think was heart shaped box on acoustic, you know...just relaxing. this kid came and said hey what is that? i said its heart shaped box by nirvana. the kid goes oh that bands gay as hell, dude you know the lead singer blew his brains out right? i said ya no shit. get outta here...
i hear ya. music repeats itself. right now 80's hair bands seem to be re-incarnating in emo/ pop-punk, and swing is coming back through bands like the white stripes...meanwhile bands like tool fight to keep grunge modern. lets just give it time, im sure grunge will start making a comeback.
what? are you saying that tool is better or worse than nirvana? an arguement would be nice please! and in comparison, no, nirvana is easily better, but tool is fuckin amazing too.
tool isn't grunge, but i understand what you mean. the few good bands are completely overshadowed by other mainstream radio friendly bands. and it's because the media latches on to a certain genre, i.e. new wave, hair metal, grunge, nu metal, and now emo/pop punk.
this song is so grunge, so raw. this is the spirit of rock n roll that's being losed

No metal riff can beat chorus in this song. Whole song is amazing - example you don't have to shred like Loomis (no offence) to cause jawdrop.

PS: Everyone here needs to listen to a band called 'Violent SoHo'. If you like nirvana, you'll like them, i'm sure! They're like modern day Grunge!

thanks man. i'm glad someone else gets it.
i think at the time, i had just heard the song 'the pot'. it has a catchy/heavy chorus, and a quiet verse with very prominent bass.
So maybe that's why i thought 'grunge'. I dunno. the point is...yea. i'm not a fan of the youtube comments section, it tends to be abused.

i hate the fact that nirvana became so commercialized and people grow up to think of curt as a god, an idol, a hero or something equally annoying
i've always saw him as one of us, a friend
And all the kids nowadays that wear nirvna shirts and stickers
Are they really in to nirvana and grunge or do they just follow a popular fucking cool image
I'd say run them the experiment of bleach and you'll find out :P

Tool isn't grunge. In fact, you define a tool perfectly. You need to kill yourself.

Well, i posted that comment say...about 2 years ago. I definitely have a better definition of genres now. Tool is Prog Metal if anything.
I just can't believe how many people rose up and got pissed when i compared the two. Wow. And called me a 'tool' for doing so.
