Derek Evans getting unmasked in Part 17 was the last drop in the glass. He had an entire plan, big and awful, to destroy Ben, starting from the island and wanting to get himself on in the world finally, with his brother's wealth.
According to this, it would have been a true suicidal act for the unmasked man to let Jade live.
But he made many mistakes later, and also after August 1999.
Grogan, maybe Derek is looking at you thinking what a DEAD MAN you will be because of him. You are better than him, even being rough. So that your axe must be for protection against Derek.
