I have thought about getting a powder tower for my press, but I've been worried about inconsistencies in the powder loaded into the shell. How acurate are they?
@Hickok45, Witch is cheaper, handloading or just buying new ammo? I am aware of the variables, if you could give me a quick lesson it would be much appreciated.
Oh!dillon! So expensive and reliable!maybe a “lee pro ”can do the same thing!search “Lee Pro 1000 Bullet Feeder ”strongly recommended!
By the way ,both dillon and lee can offer auto cartridge case feeder, auto primer feeder, and auto bullet feeder ,together!with different mechanical way,but who cares!
So after preparation, you just need to pull the bar!easy and efficient!
@gascanbad, Well, I hope they've improved the Lee Pro 1000. I had four of them prior to getting my Dillon presses. I spent all my time trying to keep them operating. That was many years ago; as I said, hopefully, they've improved them a great deal since then. I couldn't get rid of the things fast enough after I discovered Dillon. Lee makes a lot of good stuff - no doubt. Good company.
@hickok45 The point I wanna say is to add auto brass feeder and auto bullet feeder on your dillon! Then you needn't put a brass on the base under the dies by hand every time you pull the bar!And also you needn't put the bullet on the brass by hand everytime if you add a auto bullet feeder system on your dillon!
search the video and you will see how the feeder system work!

@hickok45 Exactly! I was going to get a 650, but the 550 for me is actually better BECAUSE it is more manual, allows YOU to control IT and thus make more safe loads. You control when brass goes in, you control when it moves to the next station (great for setting up and checking).

Just wanted to say that these vids helped me alot to set up my own handloading station. Here in the Netherlands, .45 ACP surplus ammo is EASILY over 1 euro (~1.40 dollars) per shot. With handloading, I can use the same case 4 to 5 times, saves me heckloads of money.
Hi Hickok i'm italian so my english is not too good, by the way i m going to buy my first 2 weapons next year and i'm glad if you can recommend me 2 gus that can be good for a beginner. p.s in italy you can't have full auto o silencied guns..... -.-
@R5H4D0W , Pretty much, but it's not something were you can just speed up as fast as you're physically capable of. There's a lot going on and you are monitoring through both sight and feel that everything is happening the way it should.
how do you make sure that a precise amount of powder falls in the brass case every time ? is there like a guage or a knob which controls how much powder you want in ?
@hickok45 -I have a question hickok, when you crimp rifle cartridges, or any cartridge for that matter, should the crimp be on the case neck, halfway on the crimp and halfway on the bullet?
@waseem1173 The amout of powder is determained by adjusting a rod that moves a plunger inside of a cylinder in the powder rotor. The farther you adjust the rod out the large the cylinder becomes inside the powder rotor and thus increasing the volume of the powder dropped into the cartidge.
@500SWMAGOPERATOR thanks man. dont you feel the urge to just move that rod just a little bit more farther in to get a faster bulletlol i know i would . it would be kinda like making your own P+ rounds. while keeping everything under what the brass can take ofcourse.
@waseem1173 On my Hornady LNL progressive you screw the rod outward to increase the volume of powder. I load medium loads if I think I want or need 'more power' I get a larger caliber firearm from my cabinet. ie if i want 'more power' I put away my .44 magnum and get out my .500 SW magnum :)
i notice i'm not seeing the rod that makes sure your powder measure returnes to the all the way down position seems to not be there ...how come? thanx
@ooorah152 , Depends on the caliber and type of bullet you're comparing. We probably save from 20% to 50%. It just depends. Actually, we don't really save any money; we shoot more ammo and end up spending MORE money on ammo. :-)
@hickok45 got it. i would def love to end up spendin more money if i got to shoot hundreds more rounds. if im ever in tennessee il drop by to chellange u to a shootout at ur amazing range lol. im not quite at ur shooting standards but then again im only 18:)
@ooorah152 In CA a box of 9mm costs $15-17 unless you find a deal. I am loading for under $6 per box. It's all about finding bullets, powder, and primers for cheap. I broke even on the initial cost in less than a month. Message me if you are really interested and I'll hook you up with some sites to check out. Just curious as to what powder you used in your 45 70 Gov.? I've read that IMR 3031 is the powder of choice but having watched your videos and accuracy results, I would value your opinion. Just got a new 1895G and it's my first 45-70 so reload data is of great value.
Hey Hickok45, I just started reloading and used Bullseye powder. Even though it says smokeless. It was very smokey and left my gun very dirty. What powder do you recommend for minimal smoke and cleanliness?
@freeze427 , Well, there are some powders out there that are supposed to burn more cleanly; however, I've not switched around much an tried them. I shoot a lot of cast bullets, so I'm used to the smoke of burning lube.
Check around and you'll get some recommendations. Anything will get the gun dirty, though, just not as much maybe.
Read whatever you can find, maybe a Lyman manual or whatever you can find online. When you get a reloading machine, just proceed slowly as you learn. As long as you are detail oriented and sober, you will do fine.
Just caught these vids. Thanks. Speaking for myself, I'd love a more detailed vid on the various stages of reloading, and how the process differs between handgun and rifle.
do you have a different press for every cartrige? or different dies? I reload about 15 different calibers with one press it is time consuming and tedious.
I have two Dillon 550Bs, one for anything that takes large primers, and one for anything that takes small primers. That helps out a great deal. That way, switching to a different caliber just involves changing out the dies and maybe the shell plate. I have powder measures and dies already set up to just slide in for each caliber. I amost never readjust powder measures.
you should make a "how to" video on how to make bullets for a 22., shotgun, 30-06, and all of that good stuff. but i like the videos and im your #1 FAN!!!
Just to set my question up, I'm from Canada so I'm not familiar with US supplies, regulations, etc.:
You mentioned that components are hard to come by and in a video from another Youtube user, he mentioned that pistol ammo is hard to find these days.
Is this because the gov't is limiting supplies/sales of pistol and rifle ammo or because raw materials (i.e. copper, etc.) are becoming more expensive?
a fellow canadian here, from what i've heard the components and factory rounds are increasing in price, due to comodities prices and the bulk of US produced ammo being sent to afghanistan and iraq.
You just make certain you don't pull the lever twice without advancing the shell plate. Plus, I use bulk powder when it makes sense, and a double charge would be spilling over the case mouth, making an awful mess. Hard not to notice that.
I'll have to check my load. I have used AA # 7 for about twenty years. I'm at the beach this week - I'll try to remember to check the load. I don't change loads once I have something that works, so I forget what I'm using. I just seat bullets at the same overall length as factory ammo. I usually don't even measure it; I just match a factory round, unless I'm having a feeding issue or something.
I'm hearing since Glock's have unsupported chambers, the brass bulges at the base. Does the Dillon dies resize completely to take care of this bulge? Is there anything special you do to the 9mm's? I read that the .40S&W's were bulging, but all Glock chambers are essentially the same. I have ordered a new size die from Redding that is an extra step to full length resizing, called Grx die...It pushes the case up through the hollow die to completely size the casing...Thanks
My Dillon dies seem to take care of that, but I really don't get case bulges with anything I load. I used to get bulges with .40 S&W when I loaded that, but I think I was using Lee dies at that time. Never did have any trouble with the .40, though.
Hickok...I just bought the 550B in January. i am only loading 40's and .223's presently. Where is the linkage rod on your powder dispenser?? Do you have a modified powder dispenser?? Keep cranking these videos. You do have useful and practical things to share us!
Not really. After wrestling with Lee 1000's for a few years back around 1990, I rather enjoy the simplicity of non-indexing machines that don't feed the case.
One can load rifle OR pistol rounds on either press. The luxury of two presses is that you don't have to switch out the primer feeder when you load a rifle or pistol round that takes a different size primer. It's also nice to be able to have two presses set up for loading at all times.
i also would like to ask how do the glocks work with reloads? i hear in alot of places that you should only use factory loaded ammo scince i primarly use glocks i thought i would ask
Nearly all gun makers say to use factory loads. It's for liability reasons. Most people who shoot much and attain a high level of skill are handloaders. There are exceptions, of course.
i have never actualy looked into reloading much but what does the avrage set up cost for a reloader i guess you would call it and the cost per round lets say a 9mm round witch is in the video
I have thought about getting a powder tower for my press, but I've been worried about inconsistencies in the powder loaded into the shell. How acurate are they?

...talk about incentive to not miss!

Yes, every round would go through the car, one way or the other! :-)

I know you've been eyeballing the new 550 casefeeder. I sure have...

Not really. After wrestling with Lee 1000's for a few years back around 1990, I rather enjoy the simplicity of non-indexing machines that don't feed the case.

i love these videos. do you need a different press for every caliber? or do you just have one for rifles and one for pistols?
