someone should do a video using this song with scenes from the likes of there will be blood, citizen kane, scarface etc.......either that or behind-the-scenes footage of george lucas making the star wars prequels.
@littleboyatom I take it you don't like Led Zeppelin then, but why are you holding what was possibly their worst recording against them? Considering it was recorded live in very poor quality and wasn't even released. Everybody has their bad days, and I think they have more than made up for it with everything else they did... just saying. Regardless, I do like the Sonics' version
@littleboyatom Sometimes on the rare occasions we do get better covers than the originals but this version of Money I hate to say it is total crap i've heard a lot of versions of this song and this one is down with the Flying Lizards which quite frankly are both very poor ..but of course you totally disagree and I respect that cheers Herbie
@jockojonson17 the only people who would like this version are die hard fans of The Sonics....better versions include The Beatles,The Searches ,and the best Barrett Strong and the worst by a mile The Flying Lizards
Good morning, do you like sixties? Listen and pod cast my program " great sound of 60' s " on the site plumfm. Greeting and made blooper in rock and roll.
Garage rock bands were influenced by the Beatles version than the original. The Beatles version was recorded two years before the Sonics version. The Sonics version is great pure rock and roll.
When the Beatles recorded "Money That's What I Want" it was 1963 and what was on the charts at the same time songs like "Rag Doll" and "Surfin USA.. Music progresses but the Beatles version influenced many garage band types to cover of this song. For 1963 the Beatles version rocks. I admit I like the Sonics version better though.
Yeah, the Beatles/Sonics/Flying Lizard versions are cool, but the original version by Motown artist Barrett Strong is still the bomb. It's clear listening to the Sonics that they were heavily influenced by a lot of hardcore R&B--I always thought the lead singer's shrieks reminded me of Little Richard. They were clearly one of the better white R&B bands from that era--they brought the raw, real, stuff, which I'm thinking--they might have been too raw for '60's radio, period.
I do have to say I've never heard of this band, and I've been around music some 50 years. Did they ever get out of the Northwest? I lived in Tacoma, Washington for less than A year while in the NAVY at Bremerton Naval Shipyards 1970-1971. The only other band to play this song with A fast tempo was the Kingsmen, and that was in 1964. When did the Sonics record their version?
So you are saying, that the Sonics paid to get the use of the Kingsmen's song, and it became, what we use to call back in the day. A"REVIVED 45." Yes?
Most writers of big music, copyright their music so if it is used without their permission, they can sue the band that stole the music .Does that make any sense? "Back in the day" most songs came out on two sided records, 33&1/3, 45's, and 78's. Singles that were played on the radio stations were mostly 45rpm(revolutions per minute). A "revived 45" was A song that was popular in A time, well before another band picked it up later, and made it A hit again.
Krappo when compared to other bands of that same time from around the Pac NW. Take time to check out " Nuggets from the Liverpool Five Parts 1 and 2)" on You Tube.
Gotta agree that this is noise when compared to other bands around the NW in the Sixties. I had forgotten about the LP5 but plan to check them out next. Thanx.
The raw sound has nothing to do with uploading. This simply sounds raw because the (clean) amps volume was way up during recording and the mics were clipped. Certainly not the kind of distortion we know these days.. By the way, why doesn´t distortion mean raw sound? in my opinion distortion is the more or less the epitome of raw sound. However, this is certainly rock ´n roll, with a raw sound.
"Money" is one of the all-time best songs, and I think I like all the different versions of it - but it is particularly suited for the Sonics.
This is influenced by the version by Paul Revere and the Raiders - at least, that one also has the additional "Stomp, shout, work it on out" line that Mark Lindsay sings. I suspect he used it first, before the Sonics.
These guys were the soundtrack for my youth! We would play their albums through a P.A. system. Bob Bennett's drumming was as powerful as any rhythm maker I've ever heard and I still get that feeling I had then when I cue up "have Love Will Travel" or "Strychnine" on my IPod. Our kids and their kids can't believe the Sonics were from "that" era, since their sound transcends the time between then and now. It's the "real deal" if you are looking for what "Rock & roll" really means.
Cool! Bobs drums are awesome bang bang bang BANG...the reunion gigs are wicked but i get the feeling JR aint into it...id sell my soul to know that these guys r gonna be ok...legends LONG LIVE THE SONICS!!!!
Has more of the raw power of Barrett Strong's performance. Not cutesy like the Beatles. Of course, this is just the opinion of one chump-ass middle-aged white guy... .
You're so right, middle-aged white dude. That's what I love about the Sonics---they were a straight-up hardcore R&B band and their version is about the only one I've heard even coming close to Barrett Strong's version.
