If you run out of bombs, an easy and cheap way to kill them is to sprinkle instant oat meal on the mound, it has some chemicle that is poisonis to ants, but the flavoring used in most instant oatmeals makes it irresistable to them.

I've seen my grandparents take out entire colonies using any number of methods, the most popular is to use boiling hot water or 450 degree F cooking oil that is dumped directly on the mound. Oil is not the best because when the oil cools other ants may be attracted to the mound to eat the oil. I've even seen entire mounds lit on fire, that works well. I like using ant baits or traps because it kills the queen a lot less conspicuously and the ants defend the trap as an extension of their mound.

My grandparents used to pour gas on the mound and then just cover it up so it wouldn't evaporate.. effective as hell, but not nearly as fun. Chlorine 'bombs' seem to be really effective against them too, for some reason. Maybe the gas or something kills them. Eh.. my grandparents have way too many fire ant nests. This was just one of several that I got rid of :D
