Good question Dale. When I fly that low I guess I never look back. I have my right hand on the throttle, my left hand on the camera, my feet on the rudders, and my eyes looking straight ahead, so I don't hit the water and reck my camera. lol.
As a former BFI teaching in a SixChuter SR-7, I always told my students, Never Ever, allow your wheels to touch anything you do not want to LAND on. HotAir balloons look so cool dragging through the trees, or sliding over a lake, a powered parachute is NOT made to do that. It gets its lift from the canopy moving forward through the air. The canopy always flies at 25mph. The power from the engine pushes it forward, add power, it climbs, reduce power, the cart swings back, it descends.
I have 600 hrs in all kinds of PPC's. U Say never let your wheels (touch) anything U don't want to land on. If U R about to touch, its already to late. I teach, don't fly over antthing U dont want to land on and if U do. Have enough elevation to clear it. I or none of my students have ever been hurt. I also have them make 6 power out landing, so they have confidents and do not panic when it really happens. Some BFI's don't. What R their students going to do when it happens.

When you were flying low over the water did you look back to see if the prop blast was making waves on the ponds? Dale

so is it ok for PPCs to just let the wheels skim 12inches off the water surface or off of any flat surface?

Simple right? You let your wheels touch anything while in flight you slow down, the cart swings back, the canopy losses lift, AND YOU DESCEND.
Trees, Corn Field, Wheat Field, Lake, Pond, Ocean it doesnt matter youve just landed. End of Story.
