Secondly, the length of this sequence reinforces that the murderers are really gone. Finally, the total incapacity of the father is to display his utter despair at the loss of his child and the helplessness that he finds himself in... he's the man of the house, but he is totally powerless - it's up to his wife to take charge. Brillant.

Maybe it also reflects the kind of people they are, trying to save themselves right after the death of their son. It really could mean a lot of things, but chiefly that they didn't want to give up.
Would your first priority really be turning the television off? Obviously they are both in shock after the shotting but I would have expected a little more hysteria from a mother whose child had just been killed.

@mizlucyjane At first I thought it could be because the guy is carrying a shot gun, and if shot at such a range it would cause the boy to fly...but we can't take his word for it either...the kid might've tried getting a hold of the gun and the guy made it as if he was running away to explain the situation.
