Just saw the band last night and Joe is still in the band, as a the lead singer, even did some of the same jokes as Jerry tells in this video. That's Steve on the piano.
Just a footnote to ras977. I definitely don't agree with you or Darth, but I respect your right to an opinion and I will post any comments that are done with taste. Thanks again for sharing. Laura (:
yeah man zal was a major component of the band when he left it was so sad especially under the bad vibes he left in. i think john should do a reunion show with them and put it on the definitive spoonful dvd...... anthology- retrospective
But unfortunately not in the UK - I see he's doing a gig in CA with Roger McGuinn in December I think - I wonder when he will tour UK & Europe if ever :-(
ulsterfry1954, Did you check John Sebastian's website? He says that he will be eventually be performing in the UK. It also have his tour schedule. Have a great day and thanks for commenting. Laura (:
This current line-up should not call themselves The Lovin' Spoonful. There is no band without John Sebastion, he was the heart and soul of the group. Without him, it sounds like a cover band, and I can appreciate if this makes you happy, but to some of us, it's really sad.
The Hollies carried on in 1972 without original lead singer Allan Clarke. I saw them at the time and they were great. It is possible for a band to lose a front-line member and still be excellent.
They're obviously not going to be able to compete with the original line-up but I think they deserve more credit than they seem to be getting here. I'd pay to see any competent musicians play such brilliant songs and these 3 Spoonful members more than do justice to their legacy, especially when Joe Butler's gorgeous voice takes the lead vocals. Incidentally, I know Jerry Yester didn't join until Zal left in '67 but he actually played piano on "Do You Believe...". An original member of sorts!
I respect your opinion,Teach417, but here are some excellent performers stemming from the original group, who have kept an era of music alive for several decades. I think that's why they remain popular year after year. Thanks for commenting...have a great evening. (: Laura
The Spoonful were never really the same after Zal left the group around '68; without him or Sebastian it's just not the Spoonful. I'm glad you can get some enjoyment out of this group, but I hope you can understand why some of us oldtimers can't dig it.
Have you read the information below? This is the ORIGINAL lovin' spoonful....except for John Sebastian! Joe, Steve, and Jerry got back together in 1991 and have been touring and performing for audiences ever since and are still going strong.
Just a slight correction; the ORIGINAL Lovin' Spoonful included Zal, not Jerry, who only joined the group after Zal left. To me, Zal's guitar lines were as crucial to the group as John's vocals. Again, I'm glad you enjoy this lineup, but I never really enjoyed them as much after Zal left, much less John.
My first reply here seems not to have gone up, so I'll say it again. Jerry Yester was not part of the ORIGINAL Spoonful; he joined the group to replace the irreplaceable Zal Yanovsky. They never sounded the same without Zal's lead lines, and when you subtract both him and Sebastian from the group, it has lost the two guys who really defined the band's sound. Again, I'm glad you and others can enjoy this group, but it's not the Spoonful we loved back in the day.
Sorry, but you are wrong! Please read the info below and visit the Lovin' Spoonful website then get back with me. I'd like to know what you think then. Thanks for commenting. Laura
John Sebastian left the group in 1968. As 1969 approached Joe Butler, Steve Boone and Jerry Yester recorded their last hit of the 60's "Never Goin' Back". In 1991 Joe, Steve and Jerry started the Lovin' Spoonful back up and are still touring. In 2000, the Lovin' Spoonful was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Check out their website for more info on the group. :) Laura

Interesting tidbit. When Sebastain was elected to the Songwriters Hall of Fame recently, Steve Boone attended & they played together.

NOT Lovin' Spoonful, not even close. John Sebastian and them were the best, not these guys.
