@ak47mustang Yeah,John wasn't his usual crazy self on this cut, but some of the faster riffs on his solo were the most "George Benson" like I've heard from him yet...
I've seen Mc Laughlin with Trilok Gurtu then with Shakti and Bireli many time with the gipsy project and at Marciac with Ceccareli so it's a fucking pleasure to see here playing together ....Thanks for this video , it was at Montreux , wasn't it?
It's hilarious to see how both are not blues guitar player, so they use additional chords such as inversion in the comping and different scales when soloing, all coming from their jazz experience.
Does Mclaughlin play like coltrane? I don´t have great ears but that´s what it sounds like to me. I´ve listened to various pieces by him and there seems to be a big slice of coltrane in his playing, starting to really dig him he´s awesome.
@shadracastrat I've always thought that yeah! I analysed a solo of both of 'em for school and especially the rythmic aspect (with is most prominent probably to non-musicians) is very alike!
@shadracastrat GD if you did not nail this! I have thought for many years now that one of the reasons I enjoy and appreciate JM so much is that his playing is what I imagine Coltrane would have sounded like if he played guitar!
This is a great version of Miles Davis' 'All Blues'. Lagrene plays some of Miles original phrases and improvs the rest, as does McLaughlin. Two masters of their trade!

Bireli Lagrene dominates the scene. Looks like Mclaughlin doesn´t know how to play the blues. Not a single melodic phrase. All lost. Congratulations, to the Great Great Bireli Lagrene
I can see why Bireli could be seen as selfish here, but I think that it is down more to the contrasting guitar types, If ever there was a time to see John play an acoustic!
@shetalkscrazytalk84 you're right...but he dosen't wipes the competition...lagrene is amazing too...he's the god of folk/gypsy jazz...he knows how to improvise thing...but they were amazing...both

Mclaughlin is out of his element. He blows over the changes as if it were one of his fusion tunes. Bireli, however, is much more diverse and IMO skilled.
Thanks for your opinion. I don't think there's really 'an element' for either of them to be in, per say. They've both mastered the guitar to the point where those blistering runs seem commonplace to them. I bet Bireli was analyzing the harmonic content as John played them, and found it neat.
Frankly, I'd say that a Selmer guitar is a little more 'out of its element' on a modal blues, but that's just me. In any case, Bireli sure plays the hell out of it!
Does he play steel strings? It doesn't look like a steel strings, but his tone is so vastly different from any traditional nylon, I wonder how he gets it ?
They're steel strings, but they're silver wound so they sound different. The guitar is a Selmer style guitar (or maybe even an actual Selmer)-they were made famous by Django Reinhardt. They're basically made to be as loud as possible (I love the tone too though). Some other current players who use them and play in that Gypsy style are Angelo Debarre, Stochelo and Jimmy Rosenberg, Bireli of course, Moreno Winterstein, Tchavalo and Dorado Schmidt . . the list goes on. You should check them out.
This rocks. I never saw this before..

This ES335 is awesome, look and sound.
Lot of respect and humility of the two masters.
No stupid competition, just fun.
Love the sound of this ES335 !

two friends are jamming on their guitars without any showdown, without any challenge, and you are looking who is dominating ? Nonsense.
By the way, blues is only the basic form and harmony here. The playing is completely JAZZ !
