The DBT's embody southern rock from a lyrical standpoint, the evoke images of Charlie Daniels Wooly Swamp, Skynyrds That Smell and Give me back my bullets and more all from a lyrical standpoint. Musically they've used the punk uprising in the South has been hip over the last 10-15 years musically and injected it into their own compositions. You really can't find a band that plays up the Rock and Roll shtick while still maintaining integrity lyrically and musically..
Why do so many people want to label things - like these guys - southern rock, alt. country, cowpunk, to name a few?? More often than not, good is good and defies labeling. Their point of origin can explain some of their influences, but other than that, who knows? "The DBTs" is good enough. Take 'em at face value.
I consider myself a Southerner; I was born and raised in Georgia and am an alumnus of UGA. And love DBT. I agree that the flag is not necessarily a symbol of racism, but it's certainly not so benign as to make the racist ties a non-issue. I don't like it, but see both sides.
What bothers me more is the association of ignorance with being southern, an association which is proliferated by comments like "nyone up north gonna bitch about a rebel flag should shut there[sic] fuckin liberal mouth"
Drive-by Truckers is my favorite band. I don't really care what genre they're from, although I really do think it's southern rock, since i basically love almost all southern rock. Drive-by Truckers have something special though, captivating a certain atmosphere. I love them and wish there was more of 'em on youtube. Can't hardly find anything, but maybe because I'm in Germany...
In my opinion in Southern Rock there's The Allman Brothers Style and then there's the Skynyrd style. All Southern Rock has to be influenced by these two sounds or by the influences that made these sounds, therefore I dont get how this or Kings of Leon are considered Southern Rock at all. Long live the real stuff!
Fair opinion but Southern Rock encompasses a whole range of musical genres, at the core is Rock but surrounding it there are several different genres such as Blues, Country, Country-Rock, Rock 'n' Roll, Heavy Rock etc, DBT's work includes many different styles of Southern Rock, for instance some of their earlier stuff had a Country-Rock vibe, later on there was a more pure Southern Rock sound and even more recently they have been mixing up several genres.........
.........Shonnas voice also brings a new dimension to their music and their lyrics are much more 'Southernfied' than possibly any other band past, present or future.
Actually I understand that it was originally named Mussel Shoals but as a play on words the Swampers named their studio Muscle Shoals Studio and in honor of that studio where the Stones, Cher, Rod Stewart, Paul Simon and about half the hits of the 70's were recorded the mayor changed the Towns name to Muscle Shoals in honor.
Know what you are talking about before posting. Several theories for the reason for the name. Only one involves mussels. The one that is most accepted is that Native Americans found the task of traveling upstream next to impossible. Hence the name Muscle
that would make sense if not for the MUSSELS harvested from the SHOALS of the tn river there. is there an 'atrophy shoals' somewhere downstream? that 'theory' is most accepted by people who don't know how ignorant their founders were. ever notice how every other town in america generally KNOWS where its name came from? here's something i know: MS is chock full of dumb people. car dealers, pawn shops and video stores.... how's that economy?
also, flag people: the flag is in reaction to northern aggression and their prior despise of agriculture profit in the south...not slavery....research. peace
*sigh* im from the north and we think differently bout the confederate flag up here but i understand both sides of it. sometimes it is used in the form of a racist statement (don't deny it!) but in this instince it isn't. just southern pride. so lets all shut up and enjoy the music.
Hi there, have just found a couple of websites for you which explain in more detail what the flag shown in this video is really about, I'll send you a message with the links seeing as youtube mods make it very difficult to post links. In short it never has represented racism nor slavery:
Hope I've been of some help and thanks for watching this video I'll make sure to check out yours.
@Guitarjammer86 its simple, the stupid clan and the white supremiscists have adopted and turned what IS a symbol of the great southern tradition and used it to incite fear and violence.same way the Nazis used the navajo indian's swastika- and to me, the same way homosexuals have adopted the "rainbow", it's called propaganda-and people are so fucking stupid they fall for it every time.thats why obama got elected to the most powerful offfice on the planet-well, it used to be-
im not from the south, not from the north, def not from the lame ass east, im from the west and i love it, but nothing beats the sweet sound of southern rock
I never got to do the southern casino circuit, and wondered if the Drive By Truckers were still around and would they do some interviews for You Tube?
the rebel flag does not necessarily stand for racism, at the start of the cival war, only 6% of southerners had slaves, what were the other 94% fighting for? ha it stands for taking a change that nedd be,and standing up for what you believe in,which is exactly what the greatest band to ever grace a stage did, resat in peace freebirds you will forever be missed, as ronnie would say! "turn it up!" hahaa
Actually, confederate means an associate. Remember, the first 'government' of the U.S. was the Articles of Confederation [a loose federation of states].
The Confederate battle flag is what is used by the Klan and various white supremacist groups and is not the Confederate national flag.
Yes black and white and Indian and Latinos have all died for this country and to exude pride in one's heritage and ancestors is not wrong. Sorry, the Civil War was not about slavery.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Confederate means to assists in a plot; an accomplice... the flag repersents rebels trying to over-throw the American goverment too have there own country with bondage & slavery... they had there own freedom to begin with they chose to try to over throw Lincoln because they wanted too expanion slave trade.
Rebel flags are BS and should never be allowed to be flown by anyone in America period.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It was never about freedom or land it was about slavery... too men black men have died defending this country for anyone too flag some BS low class flag in there face.
dont make bs comments untill you by a ticket and b convinced forever

CLOI 3 years ago
It's the confederate state flag, used by the confederate army in the American civil war.
Sadly since then it has been misused and mistreated by such evil organisations such as the Ku Klux Klan and white supremists.
In all honesty it really stands for freedom and heritage for the American south.
