Being Russian has nothing to do with this. Both Nastia and Shawn are both representing USA. Both of them won golds in the Olympics. Isn't that enough? Both of them have their own, unique way of performing. They can't all be the same.
Besides having a gifted talent, Johnson is phlegmatic.That quality makes her a happy, confident gymnast. Chinese and Russian gymnasts are gifted too but they look worried all the time. That negativity have always made them perform under par.
Shawn Johnson winning olympic gold on beam is a sad day for women's gymnastics. No grace whatsoever, just raw power with difficult skills & a non-flowing routine...not your ideal beam specialist.

I'm actually lost in the gymnastics of the 90s. Seriously though, I was disappointed with this Olympics' beam event finals. Aside from Nastia & Li Shanshan(even though she fell), I wasn't impressed with the routines at all and I don't think Shawn represents what a beam specialist is like Kotchetkova, Miller, Yang Bo, Ling Jie's or even Olga Teslenko. Johnson's two big tumbling skills are about the only eye openers in her routine, the rest of the routine is not flowing or grace savvy at all.

I'm making something of myself by studying hard and working hard to become a doctor but that isn't the point. First off, I understand what you're saying about all the past beam champs sticking their dismounts, but with this new scoring system its all about your start value. Shawn had the most difficulty and that means that even if Nastia and Shawn both had flawless routines. Shawn will always win. Plus the step on her dismount is like the tiniest ever. Probably only worth about .05 off.

netballstar, I bet you I can stay in a handstand for more than 3 seconds. I was a gymnast myself; not as good as Johnson of course, but that's beside the point. Why don't you take a look at the 1996 & 2004 beam champs and see how they both stuck the same dismount Johnson did.

Chow is indeed a great and respected coach. Also much credit should also go to Shawns other coach, Chows wife Li (Liwen Zhuang). She has coached Olympic athlete Shawn Johnson on the beam and choreographed her floor exercise. Zhuangs superior knowledge of conditioning is key to Johnsons success and has helped her avoid serious injury. Zhuang and Chow were both on Chinas national team in the 1980s.
You cannot coach talent. Talent is what helps people win. Coaches can teach you skills and elements, but that doesn't mean you'll be good at what you do. You have to have talent, which is what Shawn Johnson has.
WTH? I'm not saying she's not talented. But she had to have a willing coach to teach and train her to get to the elite level. And not all coaches do that...

why does everyone always have to compare her gymnastics to others with extremely different body types. Well, she is what she is. Your average person watching the Olympics couldn't give a shit about her innovation, rousing form, fluidity,and artisty. So many damn connoisseurs. Why can't she just be Shawn Johnson, a great gymnast in her own right.
Overall, Shawn does not have bad form. Where she is most criticized is flexibility. However, the point I was trying to make is that the other gymnasts that she is compared to are from a different time with a whole different set of rules. Secondly,I was saying that most viewers of the Olympics loved her consistency, skills, etc. Most viewers are not experts on the code of points and technical requirements;They liked her for who she was in competing. Where have the days of vibrant, dynamic and compelling gymnastics gone?
Shawn Johnson was solid and consistent but never in the same league as Aurelia Dobre, Svetlana Boginskaya, Daniela Silivas, Yang Bo, Mo Huilan or Catalina Ponor.
Gymnastics is about innovation, rousing form, fluidity and artistry.
man i miss the olympics. i miss seeing Shawn's smile, her exciting performances, and Chris Collinsworth's interviews. I also miss Michael Phelps' dominance. Dude, another 4 years to come. =(

netballstar, I bet you I can stay in a handstand for more than 3 seconds. I was a gymnast myself; not as good as Johnson of course, but that's beside the point. Why don't you take a look at the 1996 & 2004 beam champs and see how they both stuck the same dismount Johnson did.

We as Ameerican citizens didn't personally attack anyone. It was the gymnastics officials. No one who reads this had anything to do with it.

Chow is indeed a great and respected coach. Also much credit should also go to Shawns other coach, Chows wife Li (Liwen Zhuang). She has coached Olympic athlete Shawn Johnson on the beam and choreographed her floor exercise. Zhuangs superior knowledge of conditioning is key to Johnsons success and has helped her avoid serious injury. Zhuang and Chow were both on Chinas national team in the 1980s.

You cannot coach talent. Talent is what helps people win. Coaches can teach you skills and elements, but that doesn't mean you'll be good at what you do. You have to have talent, which is what Shawn Johnson has.

Hey there. Try looking for coverage by typing in BBC Beijing Olympic gymnastics. I found footage of finals, team finals and the AA. This is the British coverage of the games and last I checked they had videos of the events unlike NBC who makes you take down videos if you post them online.If you can't find anything send me a PRIVATE message *click on my name* and I will direct you to the videos which I have under my favourites folder. Hope that helps you out.

I think Nastia should have gotten the gold. I love Shawn but over all Nastia's was gold. Shawn ccan't even show a full split in her leaps.

why does everyone always have to compare her gymnastics to others with extremely different body types. Well, she is what she is. Your average person watching the Olympics couldn't give a shit about her innovation, rousing form, fluidity,and artisty. So many damn connoisseurs. Why can't she just be Shawn Johnson, a great gymnast in her own right.

Overall, Shawn does not have bad form. Where she is most criticized is flexibility. However, the point I was trying to make is that the other gymnasts that she is compared to are from a different time with a whole different set of rules. Secondly,I was saying that most viewers of the Olympics loved her consistency, skills, etc. Most viewers are not experts on the code of points and technical requirements;They liked her for who she was in competing. It seems everyone has become B-panel judges.

Where have the days of vibrant, dynamic and compelling gymnastics gone?
Shawn Johnson was solid and consistent but never in the same league as Aurelia Dobre, Svetlana Boginskaya, Daniela Silivas, Yang Bo, Mo Huilan or Catalina Ponor.
Gymnastics is about innovation, rousing form, fluidity and artistry.

yeah, but its not as exciting as the summer olympics. you cant see swimming, basketball, gymnastics,volleyball,and the most important part of all, the EXCITEMENT and the determination on these athletes. Especially on michael phelps, and shawn johnson.
