He is 12 years old, so I'm guessing he might be in the 6th grade, and back at that time, 6th grade was still a part of elementary school before it became a part of middle school. In elementary school, we always have one teacher teaching us all of the subjects rather than take the subjects at different classes in middle school. I got confused by that part, too.
