I first watched this movie when I was 11 and I absolutely loved it! To this day no superhero movie really even comes close for me. In 2008 I went to New York and visited the building that stood in for the Daily Planet in the movie, you know the lobby with the big globe in the middle, and shot some video which you can watch in my youtube page if you like.
I had two minor quibbles with the movie. 1. Metropolis in the comics is supposed to be a substitute for Cleavland the hometown of the character's creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster and 2. The reversing the world ending, that just made absolutely no sense from looking at the comics or from a scientific standpoint.
I honestly don't understand the admiration for this film. People complain about TV's Batman being campy but this film is pure camp. You can tell Reeve is the "son" of Brando because he inherited his penchant for mumbling - as Clark and as Superman. The result is that he doesn't come across as being very super. I saw this in the theater and I was embarassed by the portrayal. Reeve's Clark is WAY over the top into farce. Why would anyone give this klutz a job at a 7-11 let alone at a newspaper?
You know it wasn't till Super man Returns did I ever See a super man Flm(and possibly most super hero films now) did I see a film that could match this(Def. A superman film too)
Thanks for another well thought out, stylishly presented review. The only problem I have with the movie is that the comic tone of the Luthor/Otis scenes doesn't always mesh well with the respectful and delightful approach to the other elements. Also I think the plot gets a bit sprawling in the 2nd half. I think they deliberately wrote and played Superman a bit 'square' and that's why Reeve delivers those lines so straight. I think that aspect works slyly.
i didnt like the actors that played young superman, and lois

According to Tom Mankiewicz, Brando had not read the entire script of Superman.
He read his lines as he filmed to keep it fresh. He confessed to Tom that as
they were filming, he read the script. Brando remarked: This is a ******* valentine.

The first half up till the appearance of Otis was great. People applauded after the opening credits when I saw it.

Great review. But "Can You Read My Mind" was the defining moment of Lois and Superman - and the entire movie series.
