i think it's supposed to partially rip off gauntlet since the enemies look exactly like common gauntlet enemies and the keys and treasure chest concept is almost the same...in the ds version you hear "homer needs food badly", "homer is getting fat" and "noone ever tells me when i need food" from the announcer, which are direct ripoffs of gauntlet.
