  • Hey I just bought a Bolun Wireless 601 Mic and the transmitter that plugs into your camera has a 1/4 (just like a guitar cable) plug in on the end of it to plug into your camera. My camera does not have a microphone input but it does have an AV out. Will it work with an adapter with the av out or can I use a 3.5mm adapter and plug it into an iPhone and have it work with the camera on there?

  • 8 people don't know their audio from their elbow

  • Very useful. Great job!

  • you give advice like a pro, sir. but what type of software are you using? are there any free softwares that would be good to use?

  • If you use Final Cut Pro X is extremely easy to sync audio and video. Check this video:

    h t t p : / / y o u t u . b e / j 0 h y f X - a R y s

  • Rick - this is great. I have the H4n, which is superb. I have a miniDVD camera with no mic input.

Is there some way of electronically syncing? Some USB connection perhaps?

Or using software to auto sync?

I do short YT vids and I don't really want to do much editing.

Also, I use OpenSource software, which is buggy and hard to use. Any recommendations?

  • @calmreason Very tricky. this is the only way I know of if you can't plug the mic into your camcorder.

  • helped me a lot thnx

  • thank you so much, without this video, I would never have been able to make that! thank you again :)

  • @HFchanel You're welcome :o)

  • Is that a tattoo?:o

  • what I do is that I don't mute the camera's built in (trashy) microphone, but then that helps to "visually" align the two spikes: one from the high quality microphone and one from the camera, after the alignment, I simply mute the camera's audio line in the video editing software.

Also audacity can change the tempo of an audio without altering its pitch: a solution to slowly drifting out of phase audio matching: no need to buy an expensive camera

  • No need to be afraid of copyright infringment. If Youtube takes your video out, you can fill a form saying why that was FAIR USE OF IMAGE, like teaching people how to use the software. Your strikes will be removed and you video will be avaliable again if you do write something that makes sense.

But tell me: was Adobe stupid enough to make you stop teaching people how to use their software? How do they expect to sell if people can't learn what to do with it?

  • Thanks, here's one person you managed to help!

  • Well, what if I have recorded a video and due to lag, the audio/video are not synced? How would I fix that?

  • @ultradude100 You need to clap at the start and at the end of each recording, then adjust the speed of the video (or audio) until the two spikes match up.

  • @rickvanman Ohhhh, thanks! I would never have figured that out.

  • @rickvanman cracking tip, ive used that already, thanks

  • Genius.

  • great great advide thankyou!

  • great job. thanks.

  • how do i mount the zoom h2 to my nikon dslr?

  • hey, thanks for the video, really helpful! the only problem is i have no video editing software, is there anything free you can recommend?

  • Well done!

  • can you connect the H2 to a camera...would the audio quality be the same?

  • really helpful mate.....i am really basic to this....A Question-- What should I do to take a video with my guitar with like 5 or 6 scenes in which I already recorded my audio prior to video take??? should i record the video 6 times (from the initial clapper point to end) and then cut ?.......Thank you for your time....cheers

  • @josephkavalakat A slightly tricky one, I guess you will need to manually match up the videos with the single audio track. I would get it roughly aligned, and then go in and tweak until it's right.

  • @josephkavalakat Yes record the first track with both video and sound, then play back this sound and mime to it

Or play along but not record sound, then use the sound of the first take with all other shots from different angles or even location as you see in pop videos.

  • @devonmale69 Thx ...that was helpful ..cheers

  • very hard to use a snapboard in minecraft

  • can anyone tell me how to sync audio and video my video is playing 2 second bhind thand audio i mean ausio is coming first how to fix it and from what software just tell me i will figure it out can anyone tell me i will be very thankfull..

  • @razanet16 Cut the audio out of the video using Premiere( or thats what i use). And since CS5 has such an amazing render time you can watch it in real time and just sync up the audio. (i used the Cut tool.)(or split)

  • what would you recommend for recording piano play? is the zoom h2 good for that?

  • @callmeCAYLOR the H2 should give you some good results

  • @rickvanman i did some research and i just purchased the h2 zoom, thanks to your recommendation. im curious though if the the exact positioning of the recorder and the setting it's on (90 degree 120 etc) will have much of an impact on the quality of my recording the piano. if you have any further advice, that would be awesome

  • @callmeCAYLOR The H2 is a good choice, you'll not be disapointed. Best advice is just to experiment with all the settings and see which results work best for you. You can monitor the sound real-time if you wear headphones. Good luck.

  • this was helpful, thanks

  • Oh sorry, just post comment about clapping and just saw it in the video

  • Could you not just physically clap?

  • @tonyhawkdude95 He said yes in the video itself. Just as long as you do so onscreen, so you can see it.

  • where would you recommend to buy a clapperboard from?

  • @rickvanman ok, thanks :D

  • thank YOU SO MUCH!!!!!

  • Thank you very much for this advice!

  • Now I understand. Thank you. Thank you. - Behind VFX

  • what is the frame rate on the H2 (have H4) though I would presume you can set it to 29.97 to match the video. also don't forget to mute that original audio track in the final mix down ! Good presentation

  • @revup67 Frame-rate is vision-based terminology, not audio.

Regardless of the frame rate set / used, the audio will only ever record at 100% realt-time.

  • @rickvanman Sorry I disagree with your statement but fully understand what you are saying. When you load a video file that contains audio then both are listed with FPS as they are joined together. Specifically speaking, yes FPS is for video but you can make a reference to FPS with the audio in this situation as the two are joined. If I wanted I could split the video and audio then take that audio file and copy and paste into a new video/audio storyboard knowing that it was created at 29.97 fps

  • @revup67 pwned

  • Thanks for posting the solution to syncing audio and video. It sucks that you had to draw the Adobe Premiere screens. Copyright infringement . . . go figure.

  • @TChalla90210 Took several months, but I sought and now have their written permission to show screen shots of their software in future videos :o)

  • I love your videos! Thank you so much for taking the time to make these!

  • @starwarscary Your welcome :o)

  • zoom h1or bust

  • thanks!

what if i need to sync a multi track song to each filming of each take, so i can edit a video-song?

(i.e have each track thats being played on the song seen filmed at different segments of the video)

    and great drawing by the way! (-;

  • Love your videos. You win a new subscriber.

  • Stupid question, but what were you mounting the camera on when filming the paper? A standard tripod?

  • @iwantagoodnameplease It wasn't that stupiid :o) Yes it was a tripod.

  • Good video, great advice.

  • Hi, im currently confused on a tad bit. See, if i record the video then i still get sound from the video. I need to get rid of the sound td and overlap the video with the recorded sound. I am using a samson mic and a digidesign mbox 2. I have logic studio and imovie.

  • Thank you! At the end, that is what I realized. It is a bit harder since I am using audacity and avidemux, meaning I can not drag the audio segment straight in the video window. Since I have long quiet periods on the audio from the camera, some scenes are harder to synch than others due to the lack of anchor points.

Also, just as a note, I tried the tempo changing and while I was able to get a total time that matches the video lenght, it was still out of synch. so, it is no good to try that.

  • Hi Rick,

I am in a situation you have described at the end of the video.

I use a voice recorder to get the audio, since most of the time the camera is far, meaning its audio is useless.

I got some good amount of videos and now had the time to go editing it, but unfortunatelly the audio shifting out of sync as the movie go.

Do you have any ideas on how to solve it?

I use audacity and I was trying to fix it with the "Changing Tempo" effect, but no good results.

  • @xofrd Bit of a tricky one that - I've herd that you can use a clapper board at both the start and end of the recording to prevent that issue (just line up the 2 spikes) but its not much help with the recordings you already have.

All I can suggest is to split your video up into smaller segments and tweak each segment until it's as good as you can get it.

Anyone got any other suggestions? - please reply here.

  • @rickvanman Use Ableton Live to "warp" the audio, or use a sound editor such as Soundforge to change the length of the audio by the tiny increments needed. Though I would probably do the first suggestion- use smaller sections.

  • Thanks mate, great video and good tips. Thought the "copyright breaking" was stupid, but was really nice from you (and very creative) to sketch it out!

    Thanks!

  • Excellent video, many thanks

  • Press F5 to skip the ads... Your welcome

  • thank you so much for the help!

  • Hey rick really good vid helped me alot!!!

  • ... brilliant video and superbly demonstrated... given me some real good help... thanks

  • I love the fact that you turn our worlds around. The H2 is a recorder with a built in mic right? I mean, I wouldn't call it a microphone.. Anyway, what do you think about the idea of using an H4 with a stereo mic on the boom pole and using the built in mic for basic ambience. This way you can atleast set the gain levels while you're recording. Plus, you can get a remote for the H4! :)

  • Awesome video! easy to follow. It's simple when you think about it, feel kinda stupid that I didn't think of it sooner. thanks for the help!

  • abo vs abo! just write a message!

  • very useful. thanks a lot!

  • this helped a lot. thank you!

  • sorry i meant to say how come... also i want to add this was the best peace of advice i ever got for syncing audio on youtube there is one which talks about plural eyes i am not too sure about it if you know but yours is just great...

  • this is great i love your english accent home come you don't sound like big old Philip bloom...lol are you of a more educated family you sound a lot more educated then these guys? at any rate i am from Brazil in south america in south america and i just love your videos they are really inquisitive and teach you a lot and also make see how easy it is

  • @claudioagmfilho Thanks for the vote of confidence :o) actually my educstion was pretty standard. most of my knowledge comes from educating myself, trying things out, and living life. Glad you like the vids!

  • Ok But What If Im Trying to Do a Music Video Where The audio Is Was Done Weeks Or Months Ago

  • @AGPJL this technique is only good for audio and video that is recorded simultaneously at the same time.

  • @AGPJL If your doing a music video you play the recorded track in the backround on a PA system, or boombox or whatever, and then have your band mates play in time with the track that you are listening to. Then mute the audio on the video and add the audio track to it, so it is in sync.

  • damn u answered the question that i had in my mind for long time. thanks, that drawing on paper really helped. Thanks again!

  • @25tubes no probs - glad to help ;o)

  • thank you so so so(x1000000000) much!

  • @jeffgod2 no probs ;o)

  • Learned something new! I never knew what all the clap thing was for. What kind of a shop in town would sell stuff like this for filming?

So, clapping is good for more than just shutting off the light? lol

    Thank you sir:)

    BOP

  • @BirdOfParadise777 Happy to help :o)

eBay is about the best shop in town for this kind of thing.

  • You have some great, low budget, video tips... Thanking You and added to my PlayList

  • Cheers mate! This is the best instructionals so far I've ever seen on youtube...

  • @grayglai thanks :o)

  • I've got a question, well questionS but right now I'll ask just 1,

We see that while making high budget Gilms, there is a camera attached with a long rod and at the end there is a person holding the rod while keeping the mic infront of the actors but out of the camera view, so the voice which is recorded by that mic, does it goes to some other device so the edittors can sync it later by a software or is it automatically Synchronizing with the video if it's attached to a camera?

  • Great vid! I've posted a video response, where I use the hit on the snare drum as reference point. Funny enough, I never realized that the principle is the same as used in all movies as shown in yours.

  • Great stuff! Thanks for the vid response :o)

  • i love you thank u thank u

  • Could you not just use Sony Vegas?

  • @karatebuff sony vegas sucks

  • OK, this is my situation.

I want to record myself, playing over a music background. I was thinking of recording the guitar with a mic onto the music software, there where the music background is recorded.

Than i would put it on Windows Movie Maker and try to sync everything. Would this work? any tips for me?

    THanks :)

  • good simple advice

    thanks

  • Great video, but quick question: I'm recording my digital piano's output audio with EXT MIC IN into the Zoom H2, so any "clap" noise would have to be imitated by a loud strike of a key. However, I can't see the audio waves in Windows Movie Maker. Any ideas on how to sync with WMM or maybe another program that shows the waves so I know where the sync point is at?

    Thanks!

  • I see where you are coming from. I rekon It'll be a case of either guessing and getting lucky, or using a different editing program. There are some cheap versions of Sony Vegas on Amazon that should do the trick.

  • haha is your clapper a 40th birthday present bu any chance rick?

  • LOL! Indeed!

  • thanks so much for making these vids - they have helped my out tremendously!

  • glad they helped :o)

  • what software do i use to do that?

  • virtually all video editing should allow you to do this.

  • =O.I see. Can I ask 1 more question. So I saved my piano music to my Flash drive as a MIDI file, whenever i play it to my computer, it doesn't sounds like the way it plays on the piano. My plan is to sync my MIDI file and my video to make a good sounds, versus the video itself. Just wondering if I can do what I'm aiming for,xp. mean time ima do the video thingy..Thanks,really appreciate it.

  • I suspect you'll need to convert the MIDI file into an "actual" audio format - like .mp3 or .wav in order to work with it in your video editor.

  • =O...Ok I'm gonna try that. well thanks for the fast reply and support. That'd really help me. Well thanks again! till nxt time.

  • I don't know - might be worth a phone call to a dealer.

  • where do u get clapperboards in store in uk

  • don't know, got mine on eBay

  • Thanks Rick. I am using a Canon XHA1 but still... :-(

  • will you please explain what is a camera with a cord driven motor. I ran into audio/video out of sych problem with mini DV tapes. It is a pain in the ... Hope you can help.

  • Hi - it's a "quartz" driven motor/engine.

It means the tape speed is extremely accurate and should match up to any digital audio recordings made independently.

3CCD miniDV cameras tend to have quarts driven motors on them.

  • You are a great teacher, speaker, persona!!! I found this the perfect intro to recording the sound in Cubase with nice mic and a cheaper video camera. Brilliant tips - thank you very much!!

One love, peace out, word to your mother, etc, etc...

    8NoteFlight

  • always happy to help :o)

  • thanks a lot , it is really great work .

  • what programs are available? I have sound on my video, don't want to use it. Used my studio to record the sound, I just need to overlap the audio to the movie and overlapping the audio from the video (bad quality)..

  • how about one of the cheaper versions of Sony Vegas? (look on amazon)

  • Thanks so much for posting this video! It's straightforward and easy to understand. I was actually able to apply the same concepts (e.g., the clap and audio spikes) to Windows Movie Maker. It's not exactly Adobe Premiere, but it was sufficient to get my audio and video in sync from separate sources. Thanks again!

  • Brilliant video - thanks for posting. I've checked out your other videos and come to the conclusion that the use of radio mics won't help me very much. Especially if I want to do a piece to camera from a distance.

  • Great help! Thanks ;)

  • Brilliant video. Like the choice of audio recorder and microphone.

My camcorder has worst possible combination of very sensitive built in mic and a noisy motor whine especially when zoomed in. What is the model number of your audio recorder/mic?

  • I have the same problem as mastao, except I'm usiong adobe premiere, can you help me please?

  • I'm using adobe premiere too - and you can see the spike. If you cant see it, click the film symbol to the left of the audio track.

Also you'll need to zoom in and expand the size (height) of the audio track graphics so it looks bigger. (just drag it bigger)

    Hope this helps.

  • That very very educational and informative. Thanks for taking the time to make this video!

  • no probs d;o)

  • Hey great video! Ive been trying to think of a way to do this for awhile! One question though...What if the program i upload the Audio and Video to doesnt show the sound waves on the audio track? I would be using iMovie '08 and I dont think it shows sound waves?

  • You would need to be able to see the spike on the audio profile in order to use this method.

I'm not familliar with iMovie - perhaps someone who uses it could answer your question.

  • Comment removed

  • I thought this was why clapper boards were used - I use a Canon HF100 which records audio as well which helps when I'm matching the audio from any of my mics.

One thing I don't understand is why YouTube took down your video showing your editing software. That's bizarre - I have seen it everywhere on YouTube. I was told by the Apple store that showing apps was fine because it was my project. It's desktop / iTunes visualizer / screensaver that isn't OK.

    Strange.

  • Great advice Thanks!!!

  • thx mate!

    that helped

  • what video editing software do you use?

  • whats a good video editor thats not super expensive?

  • COPYRITE..........Rick have you seen all the game shots ,software tutorials, let alone the TV,Music Video and Film footage on here they are taking the piss........when they shut that lot down then they have something to moan about.

  • I guess I have to add that the trouble only occured when I applied for the video to become ' revenue sharing '. They asked me if I had permission from adobe to use the screen shots. when i said I hadn't asked, they pulled the vid. :-(

  • Very informative video and great comments as well. I prefer Final Cut Pro, but Premier is good. I also don't get the infringement deal. If anything, this video would sell the Premier software as people are more apt to buy something that they know how to use.

  • The other thing to mention in the edit systems is that sometimes capturing all your tape in one go, especially in FCP, can introduce audio sync problems. Better to do it in ten minute chunks rather than do it one go.

  • i always thought the slates were a hollywood thing. lol. i didnt think they actually had a purpose. lol. good to know. but I also didnt ever think of recording audio and video seperate. I guess thats how u eliminate wind noise and all that stuff. thanks!!

  • BTW, I don't see how YouTube can claim showing a computer screen violates copyright. How then does one justify the massive number of Photoshop tutorials on this site? Anyway, nice vid.

  • The owner of the property you are using in your videos has also rights on your video covered by the ©law. If you haven't got a permission then the (copyright) owner has the right to get the videos with their material (property) removed from YouTube. YouTube doesn't claim it - it is the copyright owner who has to file a copyright complaint otherwise nothing's going to happen

I agree it is hypocrite and weird but it is still their right to do so. But maybe it was a false claim of someone else

  • But Rick could claim this is Fair Use, especially if the shot of the waveform is relatively short. That aside, it seems entirely counter productive for software developers to issue take downs for tutorials.

  • Fair Use only applies to the American copyright law. As he's british citizen then I doubt he would go to a court in Frisco to let a court decide. The fair use is also a very spongy policy and even the US Copyright Office still recommends to get a permission for fair use, too. And if he was putting ads on it then the video is no more non-commercial and this makes "fair use" even more difficult.

  • Yes I agree it is weird - seeing as there are screenshots all over YouTube. I phoned the Apple store to check it was OK to upload screenshots - they said it was fine because it was my project.

  • Good video btw.

  • One thing I didn't hear mentioned is to make sure that the sample rate of the recorded audio is 48k, which is what video uses. If you've accidentally recording audio at 44.1 (CD quality) it won't sync to the vid track.

  • Wow sweet thanks

    MM

  • BTW, I purchased the ZOOM H2 mic and love it!

  • Thanks Rick for another great how to video! Are you saying that youtube will pull any videos with screen shots of the software that we use for how to videos? How us will wannabe video makers like myself are going to learn without seeing the teachers screen? :( Anyway, all of my videos were deleted without any message from YT :( 5 Stars! Thanks again :)

  • Exellent video and top notch info , nice one !!!

  • I only have Flip and Vado cameras, no way to plug in a remote mike. You have to stay very close to the camera or the sound drops off. I think this is the solution. Thanks for the info Rick.

  • that is why you record your audio and video seperately!

  • New tattoo?

Very helpful, thanks, but where's the jib? :-)

  • i can show off now as i new how to do this haha

Ok maybe i didnt lmao so thanks for the tips there is one or two vids i need to do thi with so thanks for your help as agine

  • yes, and in the mean time people have turtorials up with the full screens. YOu should just put it back up. Great job.

  • Very Helpful Rick,

    Thanks

  • Hope youtube has no problem with this video. ha ha ha... nice wotk. Thanks

  • so far so good LOL

  • very informative thank you came across quite well i thought it,s easy when you know what you are doing but putting it into words etc is another thing , hope the book doing well .

  • Thanks. Glad it came over ok. Yes, the book is not doing too badly although i haven't really been pushing it.

  • Thanks so much mate! Just what I've been looking for!

  • great video, I enjoyed the tips

  • I always wondered why they used the clap boards and I am happy that you made this video.

Now I have a better understanding. Thanks so much.

  • no probs! glad to help :o)

  • you can use the clapper board at the end of the video again and stretch the audio or video to match

  • what if the camera dosent have audio?

  • @rikuwillkillu - Well...that's really the whole point of this video. You film with your camera and you record audio with a separate audio recording device.

Your camera doesn't have to have audio at all. Watch the video again and it should become clear.

  • mjt1517 pretty much sums it up. This video shows you how you can record sound independently from the video camera, and can then add it to your video footage using your video editor.

  • It's just crazy for YouTube to remove your video just bcs you had a screenshot of your editing software. Good drawing and nice explanation about the quartz clock in the camera for syncing.

  • Just looking at software is a copyright issue?? What kind of crap is that,i guess the fact you look like my uncle could be a problem as well. Great tips and shame on Adobe,my thoughts
