It's great to be able to actually see Lefty pick and sing. :) Thank you so much for posting this. He's definitely the most talented singer/songwriter that I've ever had the pleasure of listening to! It doesn't hurt that he was also quite handsome! ;)
@46r11 everytime I read these comments it's about all the junk we get to hear on country music stations nowadays and yes it's so very true,I call it "infiltration country music",it has nothing to do with the real thing. And yet these so called country performers survive because apparantly the technicians in Nashville have found a way to package the whole thing in a way to reach a huge new audience and they are very succesful in doing this cause everybody now is making millions.
@46r11 you r right, they can't even tune their own guitars and yet become millionairs compared to the old real country stars, hmmm strange world I guess.I get sick n tired listening to so called country stations,it has nothing to do with country music so I just switched to bluegrass music stations where everything is still pure and not infiltrated "as yet",thanks for posting Lefty's music,Eric.
@JohnRinNoHo No. The nickname came because he had the unusual condition of favoring his right foot. It probably saved his life, as a child on the farm, when an epidemic of foot-and-mouth disease was rampant.
It cost him the position of first-string kicker on the football team, when it was found that the school had only a right-foot ball.
Later, he had trouble during his military career, as he (and his drill sergeant) would find him marching out of step with the rest of the company.
"Please never forget what is Pure Country Music". You've got that right!! The stuff they play on the radio these days is pretty sad and not country at all!!!
I would argue that the Carter Family, Uncle Dave Macon or The Skillet Lickers were closer to being "pure country" but I still love these old recordings.
Lefty was a great talent who left us way too soon. His voice was one of a kind and probably never to be heard of again. Thank you for posting this video.
I wore out an old 78 rpm wax record in the 1950's playing this song! Those were the days when we had to replace the needles in the arm of the phonograph. This was a good song to dance to at the Saturday night dances played by a good old CW band. Those were the days my friends!
he was 'real' country. a true GIANT in every sense of the word. if you dont know the songs of this man, go back and study your history...Lefty started his brilliant career back in the 'HANK Williams' era. we will never see his like again.
This is what we heard as kids..small town in Oregon. I actually thought he was a friend of my brothers.lol The classic country is the best ever. I listen to Music Choice on cable..Margie
lefty is the song you need when you need a push in the right way whether it is respecting your parents or showing you how to tell her she is the one thanks lefty
Each time I see and listen to Lefty here it brings tears to my eyes. He had a troubled life but a fantastic career and somehow I feel this all shows in his personality while he's singing this song. He always said he lived each word in his songs and you can tell with just about all of his recordings there is a lot of emotion in them. What a fabulous artist he was. Thank you for posting. - Paula
this IS REAL country music. besides maybe Toby Kieth and dixie chicks modern country is shit. they stole the steel and stole the banjo. its very sobering :(
here in europe we sadly never got the opportunity to see lefty frizzell in his all too short lifetime
i love his music and its easy to see that a lot of artists were influenced by his unique sound notably the great merle haggard amongst many more
todays so called country music will never compare with the likes of hank williams ,ernest tubb, marty robbins loretta, tammy, etc, etc, i could go on but the list is almost without end
the american people should be proud of that particular period
zereedon, I'm almost besides myself that you, a man in another country, did respond in such a way. I'm touched that you were touched by this man. He's not necerally one of the "biggest", names "popularity wise" in our country, but to me, he's one of the greatest country singers of our century. To me, he has something "special" in his songs and voice and style, that just says all that. Marc Trainor.
Absolutely magical song. If you have the money and are able to find it, but his Life's Like Poetry box set, six disks, if I remember correctly, of just pure magic.
I'm related to this man, honestly. My dad, Robert Allison Frizzell Jr. (Not famous) is his distant cousin.
I dream of singing, too. Thanks for knowing Lefty. I did a report on him for my school project. :)By the way, are there any other Frizzells out there? My name's Ellen, and you might know me.
To me , Lefty lives every time I sing one of his songs. Even though I was a young boy when I first heard his records, I'm imprinted for life...Thanks for posting this memorable song.
Has anyone mentioned that this must be Connie Smith in the video with the tall gentleman? It sure does look like her. This is my favorite song of Lefty's, altho I do like them all. I am glad his brother David Frizzell has been carrying on the family name and his voice is almost as good as Lefty's. Thanks for the great video.
If they made a Mount Rushmore of Country Lefty would have to be on it. It's obvious Merle Haggard was the Son of Lefty and Keith Whitley was the grandson.
Lefty was a wonderful singer. He was also a bit of a "character".In other words he liked drinking and fighting-preferably in the same evening.Maybe that's why plee456's grandad didn't sue?
That is for sure. But, he is still with through his music and spirit. And, as long as we have this site to help keep his music alive he will continue to with us.

He stole it from my grandfather and I have proof. My grandfather cut a record with this song a year before Lefty sang it. He heard my grandfather sing it on 6th Street in Austin and he took it. My grandfather wrote this song for my grandmother after he decided to quit being on the road. Lefty Frizzel is a thief.
ahh! there will never be another "Lefty Frizzell" no wonder he was Merle Haggard's idle and Randy Travis', George Strait's, George Jones' and on and on and on!
Great music from one of the pioneers. Goes to show you don't need a 15 piece band to provide the musical background. The girl in the vid. is definitely Connie Smith.
It's classic country all right, what truly pleasing sound! In reflection... great music that became a piece of our lives! Too bad that time has marched on, leaving tunes like these to simply take their place in history! If you're looking down at us... thanks Lefty!
I think they are part of the Stoneman family that included Donna Stoneman --who is the woman in the video. The guy is one of the Stoneman brothers---Pop and Hattie Stoneman had 23 children---about a dozen survived to adulthood.
Could you imagine if someone walked into nashville and sang a song like this.......... Its really sad what country music has come to, This is the real stuff here...thanks for posting this!!
My favorite Lefty song. I would always request this song from the band where ever we went dancing - back in the 1950's. Does this bring back the great memories. REAL country. Thanks for this.
Oh God, I almost forgot what "Real Country" sounded like. Thanks Lefty. I wonder what he would think about this crap they pass off nowadays as country? I saw George Jones in concert recently. He said, "I wouldn't make it in country music if I were just starting out today." What a shame.
This is my all time favorite Lefty Frizzell song. This is country, folks, don't be fooled by turning on your radio's to those "real country music" stations.
These young punks od Country TRY to sound like The mighty Lefty, "dream on guys" its all about "heart" only Merle came close to even sounding that way..George Jones said" every show i try to get as close to sounding like Lefty as possible, thwn i KNOW I,VE GOT IT RIGHT"
The new so called country singers riding on the coat tails of the great Lefty and others. They should be ashamed to even be called country. All the new country singers suck.
I used to listen to lefty my dads records and I loved them then and now. great ole sounds.

What a nasty thing to say. Do you have proof that he stole it? If so why didn't we hear about it.
If your grandfather, did write it, "Lefty" did it justice, by recording it.

I love you! I'm AMAZED at how much Lefty delivers with so little instrumental support. He's the total cat's meow!

Great music from one of the pioneers. Goes to show you don't need a 15 piece band to provide the musical background. The girl in the vid. is definitely Connie Smith.

Lefty influenced a lot of people in country
music. He was a great pioneer. Lefty, Merle
and many more greats including Hank were
influenced by the singing brakeman, the great
grandfather of country, Jimmy Rodgers.

Merle Haggard is a big fan of Lefty,Jimmy Rodgersand Bob Wills :)

It's classic country all right, what truly pleasing sound! In reflection... great music that became a piece of our lives! Too bad that time has marched on, leaving tunes like these to simply take their place in history! If you're looking down at us... thanks Lefty!

Gosh, hearing this makes the truth really hit home. Singers on country radio today just plain SUCK! Lefty blows them all away.

I'm pretty sure the woman is Connie Smith, but I'm not sure on the guy.

I think they are part of the Stoneman family that included Donna Stoneman --who is the woman in the video. The guy is one of the Stoneman brothers---Pop and Hattie Stoneman had 23 children---about a dozen survived to adulthood.

The artists that owes the most to Lefty, in my opinion, is Randy Travis. He's good, but you can sure here that "Lefty twang" in his voice.

These young punks od Country TRY to sound like The mighty Lefty, "dream on guys" its all about "heart" only Merle came close to even sounding that way..George Jones said" every show i try to get as close to sounding like Lefty as possible, thwn i KNOW I,VE GOT IT RIGHT"
ivanmullan3000 4 years ago
Lefty, what else can be said. Pure Hard-Core Country. Doesn't get much better then this folks. What show was this on?

The new so called country singers riding on the coat tails of the great Lefty and others. They should be ashamed to even be called country. All the new country singers suck.
