I often think that English speakers really have no business talking about the 'ego'. I don't "have" an ego, I am an ego, or a yo, an io, a je, an ich, an "I". Now, I think "ego" in modern usage comes to imply a "false" ego. There is writing in psychological literature about the true self and the false self/persona constructed for defense. Now, what RD means perhaps with his three layers is just layers of falseness, and within is the authentic self..whether eternal or not

Are his perceptions of the universe and God inspired by psychoactive hallucination or did he logically deduct his ideas and test them? I know I have had similar concepts under the influence of marijuana and cant help but think that my psychoactive fantasy however detailed and logical in MY mind... is just that. :(

It is a photograph of a "man" referred to as "Neem Karoli Baba", from whom Richard Alpert received the name "Ram Das". Some good references about Him can be found in the writings of "Krishna Das". Before making a determined conclusion on Ram Das, look into his Guru, please.

Karma and reincarnation only occur in the first three states because we are identified with them. Once we recognize and identify with transcendental consciousness, the cycle of karma ends even in this body. Does that help?

I am happy to report that my experience, having been brought up in the Christian traditions, was impacted mightily in the early 70's by Ram Dass. Prior to knowing about him, I had had that "deeper experience" and was terribly disillusioned with the "western materialistic view". I read his book "Be Here Now" that helped clarify so much of what was happening in my life and the world. I had the experience of hearing him lecture in Los Angeles in 1973. He helped me beyond words!
