I lived in Montreal for 5 years. I moved to the US, saw all the major cities, but they cannot compete with Montreal when it comes to culture, and lifestyle.
And yes, Montreal metro is also more cleaner and quieter than many subway systems in North America.
@yourcooltoo Actually, it's only slightly more expensive than steel. One huge advantage to pneumatic cars is that they hardly create any vibrations. If you've ever been to Toronto, for instance, you can always tell when you're above or near a subway line and it's not pleasant. Moreover, steel-wheel vibration can be very damaging to surrounding structures. The Montreal Metro is a monument to a time when Quebec had big dreams and built things to last--these cars are the originals!
well in toronto its steel. and the trains start differently when they start up. its also a different chime than the montreal subway. does montreal have automated annoncments on the subway? toronto does.
I live in NY now but I'm from Montreal...I actually find the NY subway quieter, except for the squeaking on turns. Tires do make some noise and the mtl metro is not as smooth as one would assume. Those trains are ridiculously old but the STM keeps fumbling the ball with the contract for the construction of new trains.
@qwertylife29 Yes i live in Montreal. But sometimes it can get annoying, but usually it doesn't. But i don't pay too much attention to that. I usually go with my music player and earphones.
@p74ty4 Yes, the wheels are made out of rubber to reduse the horrid sound that metal wheels do. Plus, they dont rust! So there are less chances for crashes!
@Nazmus1992 Whether or not they're smoother is up for debate - it depends heavily on how well-maintained competing systems are. As for the speed, however, our Metro is actually a bit slower than most other systems - a maximum speed of 45MPH as opposed to 50 or 55MPH for most steel-wheeled subways. (Yep, they go by Imperial units.)
That being said, however, I would not at all want to change the way the Metro is. It was built for rubber tires and should stay that way.
@jaclm Ah, when I meant faster I meant that trains with rubber tires can go faster in curves and steep grades that can trains with steel wheels. Smoother yes, rubber tire wins. Think about it: montreal's metro is from the 60s and 70s, compare that old trains with steel wheel. Trains of the current decade will run better in rubber tires than with steel tires. The new metro cars coming in a few years will also feature rubber tires.
Because it makes it look weird on montreal models looks like car tyres. Thats why im not use to seeing it we dont have subways in australia and our trains have wheels covered. see for your self
Two things: first, the rubber tires make the trains quieter and, second, why would the wheels need to be covered on a subway train. Aerodynamics aren't exactly a big issue.
Okay look you like it shown i dont we all have different point of views. When i observe things i do it from top to bottom and if i find something even small slightest problem ill dislike it. I have know idea why would wheels need to be covered on subways as again we dont have a subway in australia So im not use to seeing this way. But the purpose of the cover is for saftey reasons. Did you not see the links i posted?
