the background is a bit too 'cluttered' imho. you got some great points though. a photographer once told me; with lighting from two sides of the face, you should always put one light at 50% of the other. That way you get the desired shadow effect, but it wont be overdone.
I'm working on a new web show, that will be much like a television show. 20-40 minute episodes. I want to know if you can do a tutorial on lighting a scene properly, and give some ideas that can drastically change the way the actual room looks when lit regularly. We want a more professional look than using just white walls at some of the locations!
Good stuff, man. Thanks for the honesty and simplicity. Having viewed 21 videos on lighting just today, it's nice to come across someone who doesn't take himself too seriously. Looking forward to more.
@BerxVideo work lights. Most likely a little more than $20, but they are SUPER cheap. I bought one at walmart for $13. buy two of those, Slap on a couple of compact flourescent bulbs, and you're looking at a grand total of $30! (minus the foam core)
@NextWaveG I have a question. Do you know the violent line breaking glitch that DSLRs get? Where does it come from? Is it super high shuttter speed -- maybe high sharpness ?
@YababaVideo Are you talking about the Jelly-Wobble effect? It's caused by the rolling shutter mechanism used in DSLRs and mobile phone video cameras like the iPhone 4.
The newest After Effects can automatically correct it.
@JenniferDeMusic HIRE HIRE HIRE ARRI LIGHTS - DON'T EVER MAKE YOUR OWN - IF THEY BLOW UP OR CATCH FIRE YOU ARE FUCKED - ARRI DO SOME LOVELY SMALL KITS - BUT DON'T FORGET BREAKERS WHEN YOU PLUG UP ...
I dont like this lighting at all and would never light it this way. Another thing that needs work in this scene is the composition. the items in the background need to be placed differently and the hard light you have on the background caused it to be very distracting and drawing the attention from the subject. A useful light would have been a kicker to camera left jelled blue and had at least a bounce card on the dark side of the face. The hard shadows on the shirt is also very distracting.
This is terrible lighting. Any amateur can see you need a fill light, its far more important than your obsession with back lights. You can't do an interview with a half dark face.
@johnydubz What's wrong is the quality of the video. The lighting is poor, the composition is poor, the audio is horrible. It should have been scripted, way to many "umms". It is off topic in many spots. That is what's not to like.
@Ryan4Butler2 I'm no pro or anything, but I made my own 'improvised' light kit. Approx 50/60 bucks. Most of everything you need buy at Lowe's. I have 3 scoop lights, a 5 and half, and 8 inch and a ten inch. Smaller ones are for smaller lights/larger, for bigger lights. I made barndoors for them using blackwrap, which you can order online, attached them with metal clips and built stands out of plastic pvc pipes. I bought filters/diffusion for them too.
I like the simplicity of this but I feel as though you should be able to see both eyes. Your one eye is in darkness... even though the catch light is nice in the right one.
@nutritionfacts123456 This was an experiment. If you watch the documentary "Cinematographer Style" you'll see this lighting setup more than once. I wanted to see how it looked.
@NextWaveG So basically, Canon 5D footage has to be transcoded in order to work on PC? If so, what file formats does it export in to which this problem occurs in PC ?
@NextWaveG I mean obviously to each there own but I kind of like the darker film noir style lighting which seems to be making a bit of a come back in independent films as of late. Like you said it creates a certain mood which I am a bit partial too these days. It's not going to be appropriate in all situations but I think less is more and keeping it simple and engaging is part of what's missing too often in films these days.
how is ur video so clear? is it just lighting or editing softwear you use ( and if so, what do u use) or the camera or maybe the file size you use to download to youtube?
This is very good. I am having trouble tpo color from low lighting using thew Panasonic HVX 200 . How are you getting such a nice color accuracy with such low light.
Tony do you use Near Infrared light as in nocturnal wildlife , Paranormal investigations and all Night shot without white light Documenting Astrophotographers going about their pass time and as you know White light is a NO NO.. oh and hows the H4n going??
A small bounce to your right would do wonders.

Can you please do a tutorial for lighting gay porn? It's a very difficult medium to work in, and the lighting requirements are quite intricate.

A traditional interview setup would be keyed from the other side. This is not an absolute rule but it would make this scene more attractive.

@qball16 Yeah, and usually you would be able to see both eyes clearly. The catch in the right one works though.. wish it was both.
