The reality of this mess is complex: The PLO were recognized as the sole representative of the Palestinian people by the Arab popular vote in the UN & consensus by public opinion in the areas in question. Arafat, speaking for the PLO made some inroads in terms of peace. Arafat died & w/ him his work; as Hamas reneged on the proposals & promises.

A majority vote is not always right is a part of democratic system. Choosing the "right" person in an election is not a guarantee. It does not mean also that I dont subscribe to democratic ideals. Hamas won the election, but they refused a second election. Why not have another election since it's what the people want? The people who voted for Hamas many of them wanted Hamas to keep some of the policies of the PLO and negotiate, Hamas did not do anything for the people. Many people who vote said, "It was a mistake to vote for them".

I agree that education and information will help Arab society develop, just as it would benefit any nation. But these opportunities (that we take for granted in the Western world) aren't available to Palestinians because they're oppressed by two of the strongest governments and militaries in the world. Do you actually think the U.S. and Israel want Palestinians to be educated and informed people who are capable of critical thinking? That would be the opposite of the U.S. and Israeli agenda.
