  • Charters are an excellent choice for education here in Texas, and yes, the cap needs to be raised or eliminated. While comment #1 is a gross exaggeration, I'm sure it is true in some charters, just like it is with some ISD's. Compare apples to apples. Our children have excelled in a charter here in TX. They are far more advanced than their peers that attend the local B & M school; a major benefit of a charter. Texans need more public school options!

  • the charter schools we've had here were complete failures....with huge amounts of money missing and no benefits for kids...just a way for more siphoning of tax payers money into the hands of greedy currupt beaurocrats - the school was shut down - look it up in the Austin American Statesman if you don't believe me

  • But that proves the point -- even though you are wildly exaggerating (many charters are doing amazing work with their kids). The few charters that have not performed have been shut down, and shut down immediately because parents left, etc. On the other hand, schools and entire districts have massive cases of fraud and failure, yet continue to operate. It took years of failure, numerous rapes and persistent outcry for a school in east Austin to be closed. It promptly re-opened under a new name.

  • Charters accept the kids that traditional public schools can't keep--students who are struggling to keep up academically, students who don't fit into the box. These kids cannot be remediated overnight. And yes, isn't it wonderful when a school is fiscally irresponsible closes down.

  • My daughter is "gifted" and she is in charter school. We love it.
