My Granduncle was a Heavy Machine Gun Crewman in I/3/6-U.S. 2nd Marine Division. He saw combat action at Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands, Tarawa Atoll in the Gilbert Islands & Saipan in the Marianas Islands. He was awarded two Purple Heart Medals & the Navy Cross Medal for action & wounds received in combat June 16, 1944 on Saipan. He remained in action for 1 hour & 30 minutes until forcibly dragged off his machine gun wounded. He suffered 15 shrapnel wounds and a bullet wound to the shoulder
