@silkspun I agree there have been many other greater horses, and you are right, he was America's horse in his era. I was lucky enough to have lived through the 70's that produced 3 triple crown winners. In that era, no one can ever forget Secretariat's great Belmont win, or Affirmed and Alydar battling it out in all 3 races in 1978. We live in the times at hand and can revere the present while respecting the ones that came before.
@queenluciaa Everyone loved Barbaro - he fought so hard getting to the derby, and then winning. Everyone believed that they were watching another Triple Crown Winning. Then he was pulled up. He didnt live the rest of his days in peace. He was in and out of surgery, at a hosptial quite a bit, and in pain, lots of pain. Thats why they put him down after the 8 months. He had laminitis plus the broken bones. Everyone was fighting for him but it was just too much for the beautiful beast.
@queenluciaa shut your fucking face u ugly bitch!!!!!! i worked close with this horse!! i have videos of edger on him tranning him!!!!!!! i was there when he would be trannied!!!!! they even let my SIT on his back! but only sit lol. but i was there and watched this horse in action so u shut ur face he is the greatest horse ever!!!
Your mommy and daddy teach you that language? I doubt that they would let a 11 year-old girl near him, much less sit on him. I saw him at the Kentucky Derby too. Impressive. But what about Secretariat?Seattle Slew?Affirmed?Man O' War? Dr.Fager?Kelso,Forego, Citation? He was not the only "great" horse in the world. Seattle Slew won the TRIPLE CROWN undefeated.
@queenluciaa first off your seriously a jack ass no horse deserves to go though this its sad when they do but some owners actually care about there horses more than others i had a horse break her anckle when i was barrel racing and my mom had her put in a cast and did everything she could for her i respect everything barbaros owners did they did there best to help him but it just wasnt ment to be and for people like you to come on here and ask why him....
I never said that. But he became America's horse because it was a good story, and it was a story that PETA used to detract horseracing. They did that with Eight Belles too. Later that derby-day a filly took a spill on the track. Had to be euthinized there. PETA didn't turn a cheek because Eight Belles was in the media attention, and thats what they wanted.
@queenluciaa in the horse business accidents happens im sure almost anybody that has ever owned a horse has had atleast one bad thing happen its just part of owning animals you cant prevent everything but when something does happen no matter the animal the good owners will do what they can to save that animal and eight bells didnt stand a chance she broke not one but both of her front legs there was nothing they could do for her
Same exact thing happened to that 2 yo. bay filly, except she so badly dislocate her ankles that there was virtually no possibility to save her, they didn't even euthinize her she died right there. This tragedy went unnoticed because of the media rummaging on Eight Belle's story. That because it was the Kentucky Derby instead of a claiming race.
@queenluciaa horses dont just die because they broke there ankles sorry to tell you that she was put down which theres nothing more that i hate than seeing an animal put down unless there is nothing else they can do and from the sounds of it thats the way it was but horses dont just up and die because they broke there ankles your wrong on that part!!!!
So I'm guessing when you break your ankles to th point of the bone sticking clear out of the skin it can't bleed? Thats just what happened. The poor horse bled to death. But a horse can die from breaking their ankles. Their body can go into shock, and they can die from that.
@queenluciaa Wait, Barbaro didn't bleed to death. They meanded his leg but then he got 3 different cases of Laminitis and they decided to put him down after that.
Eight Belles didn't bleed to death either, they decided that mending 2 broken front legs at once was impossible, so they put her down on the track. Ruffian broke 1 front leg and broke the other front one after coming out of surgery. I dont know of any horse that died from bleeding to death from ankels...
@breyerhorserock eight bells didnt die because of just breaking her ankles she died because she was put down on the track.....horses dont just die because they broke there ankles in a quick manner over time then yes they would most likely die but not immediatly
@barboro1 she was put down because she broke her ankles. they don't just put horses down for no reason, and even if they didn't she would have probably gotten laminites and died from that
@breyerhorserock maybe you should reread what i said horses dont just die in a quick manner from just breaking there ankles (unless they are put down) ..................."horses dont just die because they broke there ankles in a quick manner over time then yes they would most likely die but not immediatly"
@breyerhorserock eight bells didnt die because of just breaking her ankles she died because she was put down on the track.....horses dont just die because they broke there ankles in a quick manner over time then yes they would most likely die but not immediatly.................i never said horses dont die from breaking there ankle or leg all i said was that eight bells didnt die because of her broken ankles she died because she was put down on the track
you have broke my heart ... he only wanted to do what made him happy, and he continued running desperately cause he didnt know how and why something was going wrong ... i cannot avoid the tears running ...
I read a book written by Barbaro's Jockey and telling by the words he used to describe that horse, you could tell he really did love that big brown animal and it really is a once in a lifetime thing to find a bond like that between horse and jockey.
isnt it nice how everyone pat him at the end instead of rushing him off in a hurry to get photos :) and the jockey gets a hug :P such a sad video though :( good though
@PonyLova777 God yes. With the exception of his injured leg, he just stands so still waiting for the Ambulance. It's completely clear to see he knew these humans were going to help him and just put his complete trust in the hands of those few he didn't know as well, or at all.
Awesome sight to see such behemoth creatures like horses interact with humans in a kind way. That's what makes me love Horses so much. The gentle interactions you can create with them.
This is just so sad.....both he and Ruffian continued to run after breaking down which ultimately cause fatal damage to themselves. Just goes to show the enormous courage and will to win that these special animals have.
With this being Derby Day 2010, it's only fitting to look back on the great races and the great horses that have gone before. This video showcases the spirit and courage of the thoroughbred. The music you chose exemplifies how the people who loved and cared for this horse must have felt. They tried so hard to fix him. Of all the tribute videos I've watched over these past few years, I keep coming back to this one. It hits my heart every time. Beautiful editing. Well done. Thanks.
thank you so much for your kind words, it really means a lot to receive such positive feedback. i'm very glad to see that the video means as much to other people as it does to me.
@MrBeautifulloser Your words are the most meaningful, To think he was allowed to live and have a chance to live out his life was the hope anyone had at the time; only to succumb to what has become his tragedy. I think the thing we all identify with most is that he stirred our emotions, squeezed our hearts and gave us hope, even if only for a short while. Many other horses have fared worse or similar, and we miss them just the same. they gave what they had. & there's honor in that.
i'm glad he had a good jockey who OBVIOUSLY loved him. he did a good job pulling him up after he felt the break, preventing more injury. imagin how hard it is to stop one of those horses. you could tell he was upset he looks like he's gonna vomit. he was panicing. that's why he putt his head below his heart. he would have fainted otherwise. R.I.P Brbaro. we all love you!
Horse racing is a thrilling sport to watch, but has many complications for the horses-all of which are pretty much leg related. It's an awful thing to watch, when a horse goes down, heart wrenching when the horse tries to keep running, and devastating to learn that they needed to be put down. This should teach us a all a lesson on pressuring horses to do well. Most racehorses end up with some kind of leg problems, and it's sad that some die. Rest in Peace Barbaro! ♥ Run fast wherever you are.
im doing a project on horse racing. and i switched from doing history of horse racing to history of barbaro after i watched this video. made me cry :(
when hes standing there just picking up and putting down his foot i just wanna hug him and say its gonna be alright, its gonna be okay sweetie, youre gonna be fine
:') he's happier now.... i know millions of people have thought this, but what would really would have happened had he not run that race? would he be as famous? no. all things happen for a reason and i know that sounds horrible, but...... i loved him......................................
Yeah they said there was a veterinarian there. Even Edgar Prado stated that Barbaro felt fine after his premature start. Also there are lots of eyes(experienced) on the horses if they were to see something it would have been brought up.
i hate watching these videos of barbaro and the preakness i hate seeing him be pulled up and him not ubderstanding why and trying to still run. It breaks my heat. D-:
I've been to "Heaven" and Barbaro is there in a very comforting, healing place. God has lifted him up to a better heavenly world of wonder. What a great, gifted horse!!
Watching horse racing accidents and tragidies such as this have made me cold at heart. I haven't cried about anything since the day Barbaro died. But once in a great while I will see something like this and my heart will just feel so heavy. I haven't shed a single tear sice he left. I used them all crying about Ruffian and Barbaro. And by the time Eight Belles came around I was just a cold hearted person. My mom can't even watch the derby anymore but I can. Sad
The part where it goes from the winner to Barbaro surrounded by people trying to comfort him, I couldn't help but cry. The song is too emotional for eyes to remain dry. He was so magnificent. I miss watching him run.
Erm, being a fan of engilsh racing im not exactly sure of the full story. I know barbaro was an exceptional horse, but did he die from this injury? What caused the injury? And what actually happened?
he died of post-surgery complications. They didn't put him down on the track. He broke his hind leg (you can see which one in the footage) in around 20 places.
After surgery, he developed laminitis, which is very dangerous for ANY horse. Ultimately they were forced to put him down to put him out of his immense pain. The poor thing...
I have an ex-racehorse and I can't help but think how glad I am mine is done with racing. It would break my heart if my boy died on the track.
Three years later and people still watch and love Barbaro. Watching this breaks my heart every time. So many great's have went out this way, Ruffian, Go for Wand, Union City, Praire Bayou, Landseer, the geat british horse McKeley, and in the 2008 Derby ,Eight Bells. Finally they are listening and making changes to to improve safety and decrease race related injury. These horse give everything they have in every race to please aus nd they deserve our love and respect. I miss you boy....
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
u fags need a fuckin life... is this the first time u seen a horse dying because of horse racing... Check out the amount a deathes the Grand National produces
And your a worthless piece of crap who has no life and can only find enjoyment out of insulting people who have a big enough heart to care. Not all people are aware of the national average, but I, for one, am. But that doesn't make Barbaro's suffering any less prudent or worth taking note of. There is nothing wrong with honoring the life of this horse and all of us who care can only hope that his soul rests in peace with all the others who have shared his fate.
I'll never be ashamed to admit that I cried (and continue to any time I see replays). No matter what anyone says about being a "man" or a "tough guy", Barbaro was a beautiful, innocent animal, just trying to run around a big dirt oval, and he was hurt beyond repair. He was such a great horse: even though his leg was broken and everyone crowded around him, he remained calm and let them take care of him as best they could. We love you Barbaro!
This made me cry too, such a poignant song. The reaction of the jockey and Barbaro's owners were clearly genuine, and Barbaro obviously trusted the people trying to help him, he was so calm and dignified.
Thank you for this video...it reminded me of how much determination he had. I keep Barbaro's photo in my office...to remind me that I can win the race no matter what. I've fallen in love with Desert Party...he reminds me so much of Barbaro.
I have to say, I have enjoyed this video for quite a while! My son is a huge fan of Barbaro, as am I. I was in the grocery store this afternoon, and heard "Fix You" on the store speakers, and it brought tears to my eyes because I could see the video in my mind. Just wanted to say your video has had a profound impact on me. Well done.
yeah, nobody gives a 'flying f' about it. that's why over 200 people have added it to their favorites. you're not going to find the real version of it anyway, so give up now.
Barbaro probably got spooked in the gate causing him to break out he most likely got injurred on his way out causing him to break his right hind leg,but i think it was just a fluke thing. RIP BARBARO LOVE YOU FOREVER!
I will never forget watching this race. The absolute feeling of horror that came over me when you could see his leg flopping around, everyone in the room had to leave as we were all in tears. I've never watched a race since then. I love horses, and I love horse racing but that was just too difficult to see.
i remeber this race... im sure people who were there and watched it payed more attention to Barbaro than Bernardini?? i know i was

silkspun 1 year ago 6
@silkspun I agree there have been many other greater horses, and you are right, he was America's horse in his era. I was lucky enough to have lived through the 70's that produced 3 triple crown winners. In that era, no one can ever forget Secretariat's great Belmont win, or Affirmed and Alydar battling it out in all 3 races in 1978. We live in the times at hand and can revere the present while respecting the ones that came before.

@queenluciaa how about u shut the fuck up! barbaro was faster then secrateriat they said. he would have beat his record. ur just a faget!
HeadDog101 1 year ago
@queenluciaa Everyone loved Barbaro - he fought so hard getting to the derby, and then winning. Everyone believed that they were watching another Triple Crown Winning. Then he was pulled up. He didnt live the rest of his days in peace. He was in and out of surgery, at a hosptial quite a bit, and in pain, lots of pain. Thats why they put him down after the 8 months. He had laminitis plus the broken bones. Everyone was fighting for him but it was just too much for the beautiful beast.

BreyerGirl25 1 year ago
@BreyerGirl25
Seattle Slew won the TRIPLE CROWN undefeated.
queenluciaa 1 year ago
@queenluciaa first off your seriously a jack ass no horse deserves to go though this its sad when they do but some owners actually care about there horses more than others i had a horse break her anckle when i was barrel racing and my mom had her put in a cast and did everything she could for her i respect everything barbaros owners did they did there best to help him but it just wasnt ment to be and for people like you to come on here and ask why him....
barboro1 11 months ago
@barboro1
I never said that. But he became America's horse because it was a good story, and it was a story that PETA used to detract horseracing. They did that with Eight Belles too. Later that derby-day a filly took a spill on the track. Had to be euthinized there. PETA didn't turn a cheek because Eight Belles was in the media attention, and thats what they wanted.
queenluciaa 11 months ago
@queenluciaa in the horse business accidents happens im sure almost anybody that has ever owned a horse has had atleast one bad thing happen its just part of owning animals you cant prevent everything but when something does happen no matter the animal the good owners will do what they can to save that animal and eight bells didnt stand a chance she broke not one but both of her front legs there was nothing they could do for her
barboro1 11 months ago
@barboro1
Same exact thing happened to that 2 yo. bay filly, except she so badly dislocate her ankles that there was virtually no possibility to save her, they didn't even euthinize her she died right there. This tragedy went unnoticed because of the media rummaging on Eight Belle's story. That because it was the Kentucky Derby instead of a claiming race.
queenluciaa 11 months ago
@queenluciaa horses dont just die because they broke there ankles sorry to tell you that she was put down which theres nothing more that i hate than seeing an animal put down unless there is nothing else they can do and from the sounds of it thats the way it was but horses dont just up and die because they broke there ankles your wrong on that part!!!!
barboro1 10 months ago
@barboro1
So I'm guessing when you break your ankles to th point of the bone sticking clear out of the skin it can't bleed? Thats just what happened. The poor horse bled to death. But a horse can die from breaking their ankles. Their body can go into shock, and they can die from that.
queenluciaa 10 months ago
@queenluciaa Wait, Barbaro didn't bleed to death. They meanded his leg but then he got 3 different cases of Laminitis and they decided to put him down after that.
Eight Belles didn't bleed to death either, they decided that mending 2 broken front legs at once was impossible, so they put her down on the track. Ruffian broke 1 front leg and broke the other front one after coming out of surgery. I dont know of any horse that died from bleeding to death from ankels...
DomingoBoy101 8 months ago
@barboro1 eight belles died JUST from breaking her ankles. so yes, they can die from broken ankles
breyerhorserock 10 months ago
@breyerhorserock eight bells didnt die because of just breaking her ankles she died because she was put down on the track.....horses dont just die because they broke there ankles in a quick manner over time then yes they would most likely die but not immediatly
barboro1 9 months ago
@barboro1 she was put down because she broke her ankles. they don't just put horses down for no reason, and even if they didn't she would have probably gotten laminites and died from that

I read a book written by Barbaro's Jockey and telling by the words he used to describe that horse, you could tell he really did love that big brown animal and it really is a once in a lifetime thing to find a bond like that between horse and jockey.

Well done. Thanks.

thank you so much for your kind words, it really means a lot to receive such positive feedback. i'm very glad to see that the video means as much to other people as it does to me.
silkspun 1 year ago
@MrBeautifulloser Your words are the most meaningful, To think he was allowed to live and have a chance to live out his life was the hope anyone had at the time; only to succumb to what has become his tragedy. I think the thing we all identify with most is that he stirred our emotions, squeezed our hearts and gave us hope, even if only for a short while. Many other horses have fared worse or similar, and we miss them just the same. they gave what they had. & there's honor in that.
80cathryn 4 months ago
i'm glad he had a good jockey who OBVIOUSLY loved him. he did a good job pulling him up after he felt the break, preventing more injury. imagin how hard it is to stop one of those horses. you could tell he was upset he looks like he's gonna vomit. he was panicing. that's why he putt his head below his heart. he would have fainted otherwise.

Erm, being a fan of engilsh racing im not exactly sure of the full story. I know barbaro was an exceptional horse, but did he die from this injury? What caused the injury? And what actually happened?
bethanycoulbyrules 2 years ago
he died of post-surgery complications.
