  • i love cream but this is a another level

  • LUV LUV LUV THIS!!

  • First time I heard this album I was visiting Coconut Grove Miami.I fell in with some crazies and spent 5 days stoned out of my gourd listening to Layla, Steve Miller Anthology, The Kinks and going to bars for wet tee shirt contests! The day I left for Kennedy Airport,I was so frigging stoned I don't recall the flight home.I came to when the plane hit the tarmac a little unclear where I was.Work the next day but a month later I was back in the Grove for 4 weeks of drug and Clapton therapy.

  • Why is everyone arguing over if its brother Duane or Eric? Just kick back and enjoy the tunes man, and like Duane said "just rock on, and have you a good time." We all know know Duane gave Eric a breath of fresh air anyways.

  • everybody dance!!!!!! yeeha!!! this will get ya movin'

  • Anyone who doubts that the guitars are all Clapton need only listen to his recording of "Let It Rain". Very similar, and an example of some great work outside of this group (well, not completely outside). Also, the Dominos sound has a lot to do with the duet singing of Bobby Whitlock and Eric. Bobby's still singing every Sunday at The Saxon Pub in Austin, and sounding great.

  • In heaven, the guitar(s) solo never ends!

  • HOLY SMOKE!

  • Layla is for sure the most popular song from this album but there are at least other three that beat it. This song reaches perfection. Timeless!

  • @ilmons1

yea, I prefer It's Too Late and Bell Bottom Blues to layla

  • Juneberry, are you suggesting there are Rock"n"Roll musicians today? Please guide me to them. because I feel so deprived.....and that's been for a long time. I think rap and hip hop will pound my brain to mush.

  • @Moonchalice its out there man, just open your ears. go to pandora and try creating some channels, you'd be amazed at what you find. even thinking for a minute that great rock and roll is not out there simply because it is not what you hear on top 40 radio just stinks of laziness man. its out there. i find it for a living!

  • How can anyone criticize such a terrific mix of polysymphony

and polyrythm? Rock'n'roll musicians today haven't a clue, don't they?

  • "I can honestly say that he was the best session drummer in the world and he made one hell of a mark as a live one as well. He raised the bar so high that no one will reach it" Bobby Whitlock A Rock~n~Roll Autobiography

  • @26bobbyandcoco

    Two words: Vinny Colaiuta.

  • Here's the best part: musicians singing and playing with passion -- all the way through. The real deal. What a legendary work this is!!!!

  • All guitars in this song are played by Eric. He mentions in his autobiography that Duane had to leave for a few days during this album's recording to honor ABB dates, but returned soon after.

Eric also said Duane inspired him to lay down some of the best guitar work of his career on these songs...

  • @RussellAWaters Actually, according to Bobby Whitlock's book, Duane Allman joined the sessions after the first three songs had been recorded. The song sequence on the record is the same sequence in which they were recorded, so all the guitars on I Looked Away, Bell Bottom Blues, and Keep on Growing were played by Clapton.

  • IDK man. It sure sounds like a Dwayne track in there. It's drowned out but I think it's him.

  • The 40th anniversary issue of this is being released March 29 (2011).

  • at :21 there's supposed to be a "wooo",... where's my "wooo"?

  • @johnhwclarke

Clapton's "woooooo" is only in the remixed version released in the Layla Sessions in 1990. Apparently the guys who did the remixes wanted to make them as faithful to the originals as possible, but when they found the "wooooo" they thought it was too good to pass up. I also recall one being added to "Anyday." He "wooo's" a lot on this album.

  • @evanguy He's moving his wooooo's around, man, there were a lot of wooooo's on The Layla lp. Don't rekon he's sampling his own woooo's? Now he could just get one good wooooo and autotune it and sample it to all his songs.

  • @johnhwclarke

At Rhapsody if you you look for "Layla Sessions: 20th Anniversary Edition" - you can have your "wooo".

  • these guys are absolutely fantastic and a great group of musicians in their short time together! I just love hearing this genre of music! Clapton, can whip out the blues like no other! Although Duane Allman wasn't on this gig,you can best bet that he was nearby! And for a life to be taken in a motorcycle accident @ a young age, couldn't you imagine what would be happening if Duane was still alive today! Such a tragedy!

  • @bluesman5355

Yup! Time capsule material, for sure!

  • @bluesman5355 Allman was playijng on this song. That's how close by he was.

  • Duane is playing background lower note rhythm slide, if you listen carefully you can hear it

  • @daledrive44

    That's not him.

  • @evanguy I believe it is Allman. No doubt in my opion. Being 60 years old and listening to the Layla album since it came out..... This is a true rendition of it. Allman on slide. One of the greatest duets of all time.

  • @warr0950

Bobby Whitlock is adamant that Clapton did ALL the guitars on this song. I just interviewed Whitlock this month and I asked him about that.

  • @Babyhowdy233

Yes, he is..You're right...Eric played all the guitars on that song...

  • @daledrive44 it is common knowledge that Duane turns up part way through the recording, so is NOT on the first 3 tracks. Trouble is as DA died tragically young & EC made the heinous crime of staying alive (& making MOR solo albums) every solo seems to be Allman's. This album wouldn't have been the same without Allman, but give the other 4 (& Tommy Dowd) credit for what they contributed!

  • @daledrive44 Sorry bro that is Allman playing during the Layla sessions. Wow...........you are right mister daledrive44. .............for a moment I thought you didn't think it was Allman. Rock on Skydog!

  • @daledrive44

I just interviewed Bobby Whitlock for Keyboard Player magazine, asking him about the recording of this classic album. Bobby confirmed that yes, ALL the guitars played on this song were by Clapton alone.

  • @daledrive44 Thats Eric playing four different guitars..

  • There's one unfortunate influence underlining Layla and assorted lovesongs, in the same way as Exile on Main Street and that of course is heroin. Except for Eric, their future was either death, prison or obscurity. I bought the album when it came out and my friends and I didn't listen to anything else for a long time.

  • @funkyalfonso

Whitlock was anything but obscure after the demise of this band. Look him up on wikipedia. He has played on a sizable number of critically acclaimed albums and even had his own television show in the UK for some time, and has been a successful songwriter whose songs have been covered by a number of noted artists. He also wrote a best selling autobiography.

  • @Babyhowdy233 Checked it out and am glad to be proved wrong.

  • I think I asked this b4, but why isn't there more video on them?

  • @shinigami285

They were only together for a year and made one TV appearance. Also, it was 1970.

  • yeah, the rhythm section is totally BAsd! duane does not play on this tune--it's all EC.

  • I am going to buy a record player soon and start collecting vinyl for just a fun hobby. I started with vinyl, but as a 31 year old man, tapes were quickly what I was buying as a little tike. Anyway, this album will be the first one I get my hands on. Where are the good record stores - the village, NYC? I will go down just to buy some vintage.

  • There is a store in Orlando Florida called "Rock and Roll Heaven"...great vinyl shop. I shopped there a few times but the gentleman is kind enough to find things for you and handle orders via phone.

  • @pcburgh01: The best record store in Greenwich Village for affordable vinyl is Bleecker Street Records right off sixth avenue.

  • ONE OF THE BEST BANDS EVER FORMED

  • I saw them many times live and partied with the band in NYC and Philly hotel rooms. EC didn't produce more music like this because he couldn't outside of the group. It was the magical combination of musicians and era, particular people in a particular period of musical history. It can't and won't be repeated.

  • damn. that explains it.

  • @breeds52 I totally agree

  • why couldnt EC have made more music like this instead of 20 years of MOR rock nobody will ever convince me that the music of the last twenty years is as good as anything the seventies produced in any genre I wish I was a young man in the seventies instead of today's ugly souless age

  • Come on, have some openness! The soul of music isn't dead. It just hides itself from the people who refuse to see it.

  • Notice that at 3:11 Clapton comes in too early and sings the word "lately" before realizing his mistake. He kept quiet for the rest of the solo and then came in at the right time. Clapton wanted the engineer to erase the mistake, but the engineer thought it sounded cool and convinced him to leave it in.

Kind of like when Denny Doherty came in too early in "I Saw Her Again Last Night" and they left it in.

  • I made a mistake- the word isn't "lately," it's "maybe." And yeah, it does sound intentional. I'm glad they left it in.

  • @007Katburglar Isn't it 'Baby'?

  • Love this tune. Love Carl Radle's bouncy, catchy bassline. Together with Jim Gordon they were one of the coolest rhythm sections in rock, IMO. They really boogied and provided a great foundation for what Clapton was doing as a guitarist.

Bobby Whitlock is cool and all :-) ... Yeah, great stuff!

  • This is my favorite song of the album. It has a catchy island sound.

  • Clapton playing guitar and competing with himself!!

  • Jim Gordon on drums! At his best!!!

  • LOVE THIS!!

  • Best jam! Serious memories!

  • Happy birthday to ye, slowhand!

  • headphones on and just lose yourself following those guitars. needs concentration for maximum pleasure.

  • .....you do!!!

  • It was a response to a wad who said it was good east coast music, not like the crap west coast like the Dead .. ect ect ect

  • I can't tell you how many times this blasted out the windows of my van as I jammed the pedal to the metal down the fuckin' highway....wheeeeee. Still sounds great and always sounds great

  • Well, Allman des'nt play on this track, and not on "I looked away" and "Bell Bottom Blues" either. But on the other tracks he kicked ass though :)

  • clapton said he did

  • Duane Allman did not participate on the album's first three tracks. All the guitars you hear are Clapton.

  • Goes to show doubters that EC could play the guitar pretty himself! However, this is not to diminish Allman's crucial role elsewhere in making this one of THE best albums ever made.

  • @evanguy Bobby Whitlock played guitar too

  • @scabonz

Nope. He only played guitar on "Thorn Tree in the Garden."

  • @evanguy How would you know that ........After all is written about Allman and the albums and songs he played. Why would you say that? That, that was the only song on Layla he played?

  • Yep, that's all Clapton. Duane's first song was Nobody knows you...

  • Its in Clapton's autobiography, that to his regret, Allman only came to work on tracks 4 onwards. Go Clapton I fucking love this song.

  • Now this is real music. Those shitty west coast hippie bands (Grateful Dead and Jefferson Starship) could have learned alot from bands like Derek and the Dominos and Steely Dan.

  • Steely Dan was a "west coast" band. Though not of the hippie variety. And while Fagen and Becker were east coast kids, Los Angeles was home base during their Steely Dan days.

  • This band and album could actually be considered Florida, it was recorded in Miami

  • This Is My Favourite Song On This Album. Thanks for Posting.

  • eric at his best, during the derek and dominos years. awesome song. wish i could play this song than layla.

  • I fucking love this song. This is just a straight up melodic jam. Fucking brilliant all around by every musician.

  • This is going to sound fucked up...but I wish EC would become a heroin addict. He was making such great music when he was a junkie lol. He has done nothing close to come to Derek and the Dominoes sine he cleaned up...and he didn't even really clean up as from the mid 70s to mid to late 80s he was a hardcore alcoholic.

  • i dont think that he actually did much music making when he was a complete junkie more of just sitting in his house letting his life go to shit. thats what i got from his autobiography

  • Honestly I think during this period of time it was more like pot/alcohol that clapton was using.

  • dude he was off junk when he did this. he started to do it later. and then drink.he was junk a drunk in love at this point.

  • yeah, whitlock said there was a ridiculous amount of cocaine around while they were recording and especially at the live shows duane played with the dominos (both were disasters) whitlock also said that it was around that time they started to use heroin

  • amazing song. i cant find any decent tabs for it tho...

  • who care's who did what on guitar what a beautiful love song.

  • " Can You Dig it!" I can Rock on I love these old tunes. Part of my world

  • isnt there sposed to be a "woooah" at 0:21?

  • It's on some mp3s from Limewire but not on the actual album version.

  • i bought the album and its on it...

  • *LISTENS TO ALBUM ON IPOD*

  • No I couldn't hear the "Woooh"

Must have been removed from the remastered version.

  • that sound you refer to isnt on this song anyway, it's on tell the truth.

  • That version is on the 20th Anniversary edition called "The Layla Sessions." It has three discs; one remastered version from the original master tapes, one of alternate takes, and one of jams.

  • Yes!!!!! I was listening for it too!

  • is this track really only clapton on guitar? i hear what sounds like at least two guitar parts on this song especialy towards the end.

  • He overdubbed the extra guitar parts.

  • are you sure he overdubbed? i thought it was duane allman jamming with him on this album (not sure about this specific song)

  • you guys may be right -but I think I hear three gtrs....? either together or split [dubbed]

  • excelente la cancion de blues .its wonderful el rock sureño

  • this is the best

  • Clapton mentioned that this song was born after they jammed in front of about 50,000 people. They start their set jamming away and they derived this song from a session. No real intention to write it in the first place.

  • Off my favourite album and a fantastic song that is just never heard. Great riffs!!

  • I love that organ coda, so much that I frequently FF just to hear it first.

  • Well, Stairway's opening is ripped off from Taurus by Spirit, so the karma evens out.

  • just incredible. I am at a loss for words. Pure raw emotion. I have heard this song so many times and it still gives me chills. Please Lord, give us another EC & Co...

  • Won't happen. Too many dawgs and 'brothers in the hood'. Oh and then there is this punk-stuff...ugh.

  • My theme song!!!! I miss Dwayne allman

  • Hehehe, this track is all Clapton.

  • Ah, haha, thanks for clearing that up man. I should have just referenced the book before posting and making myself look like a fool.

  • the best rock-blues album ever made

  • Yea, was a shame about Gordon. The drugs the Dominos introduced him to brought out his underlying mental illness resulting in the death of his grandmother by Jim's hand with a claw hammer. He was known for consistently hitting the "sweet" spot on on a drum head much like Jim Keltner. What a waste. Dope sucks.

  • Wow! Jim Gordon played the best drum fills ever. Such a tragic life he is in now.

  • A song that is definitly not played enough on the radio!

  • @thefunisnowhere

    So true!

  • I don't understand why Clapton says this is a ripoff of stairway in his autobiography...

  • I'd have to say this is my favorite off of the album-a great guitar jam song.

  • Great song, great album! Loose sound yet very tight, beautiful flavor and flow. Love the guitar sound.

  • Great song
