  • Who in their right ming would dislike ANY of these B&W Andy Griffith Shows?????

  • Wonderful and still funny after all these years. Thanks for posting.

  • yes that is phil collins

  • Is it me or does Ernest T. Bass look like Phil Collins? I know he doesn't sing like him.

  • Found this on a website --"Old Aunt Maria etc etc" was a jumping rope poem from my wife’s childhood in Dequeen, Arkansas. I can’t find the script but I think it went "Obedia jump in the fi-ah." Somehow it got to be "Old Aunt Maria" on the screen.

If I had known that the show would live this long (and that I would live this long) I would’ve paid better attention.

All best to you and yours, Everett Greenbaum

  • After a long day at work this clip always puts my attitude right. Ernest T. is the man.

  • Actually they say that the style of music called "Rap" derived its name from the "Blondie" song, "Rapture". "They" meaning music scholars. But that doesn't mean Ernest T. Bass isn't any less entertaining for what he is! I've seen this episode recently, by the way. I only found my way here because I felt like searching for, "The Darlings vs. The Clampetts". Then I was going to do, "Ernest T. Bass vs. Granny Clampett". Thanks for posting your clips!

  • If you are familiar with Wikia.. check out the Andy Griffith Show Wiki. It's like Wikipedia, but it's Wikia. It's a VERY awesome site, where me and others have worked so hard to make it the go-to guide for all things TAGS (and R.F.D and Gomer Pyle USMC). It's the Mayberry. Wikia. Com (not the Wikipedia site) but the WIkia one. Stop in, and see all the hard work we've done! :)

  • elly mae would woop him

  • Ernest was the Ignatz ( the brick throwing mouse ) of Mayberry.

  • My most favorite moment of Ernest T. Bass. Thanks for posting it. Makes me smile each and everytime I watch it. (lol)

  • I read an interview with Howard Morris a number of years ago. He said the producers gave him the script for this and gave him six weeks to develop the character. He said he worked on the part every single day.

  • saving up for a gold tooth .. bling bling ..

  • I'd like to see Ernest T keep the Clampetts up like this, just to watch Granny put a load of buckshot in the seat of his britches.

  • Love Love Love Ernest T Bass!!

  • 6 People have the last name "Darling"

  • you aint heard the last! of Ernest T Bass

  • weird video

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA

  • What was that he was singing?

  • @2010metsfan it's called "Old Aunt Mariah". Google for lyrics. (Some have it as "Maria")

  • @Squank63 Thanks! I figured it had to be a real song. Next up is Eating Goober Peas!

  • THIS is the beginning of rap...forget Biggie Smalls and Snoop Dog....lol!

  • You ain't never give me a chance to court you proper....I wanna prove that I'm the man fer' ya!

  • @n8tureboy ~ You just keep doin' them there pull-ups and serenadin' me an' willst see 'bout it ; ) !

  • @82sweetheart

    Wink~wink!

  • Lookie here....I can do 16 pull-ups!

  • I dont chew me cabbage twice.

  • If I would have lived in Mayberry back in the day, I would have shot that annoying douchbag.

  • Now ya wanna hear me sing goober peas. LMAO

  • Ernest T: Awright, listen... (He accompanies himself by slapping a large can.) Old Aunt Mariah, jump in the fi-ah, Fire too hot, jump in the pot, Pot too black, jump in the crack, Crack too high, jump in the sky, Sky too blue, jump in canoe, Canoe too shallow, jump in the tallow, Tallow too soft, jump in the loft, Loft too rotten, jump in the cotton, Cotton so white she stay there all night.

  • @Tranese78 I believe it's a gas can!

  • Phil Collins was on TAGS?

  • @muzzleflash7 That was the best comment ever...

  • "I don't chew my cabbage twice and you ain't seen the last of Ernist T. Bass" lol

  • Absolutely classic Andy Griffith, not to mention TV itself.

  • it's amazing he's still alive even more Andy's still alive

  • @Kalkas53 Ernest T is dead.

  • @Banjomountain It's amazing that Andy's still alive

  • @Kalkas53 It sure is. I find it amazing that so many of the cast members live(d) as long as they did. The remaining cast members that I know of are: Charlene Darling, all but one of the 'Darling' boys aka the Dillards, Andy Griffith, Goober(George Lindsey), and Opie(Ron Howard). Barney passed away just 2 yrs ago or so.

  • Yep when Ernest said he is saving for a gold tooth, thats proof that this is the first Rap Video !!!

  • Charlene seems pretty tame for a mountain girl,if this were the Clampetts, Ellie May would have challenged Ernest T. to a wrestling match,or else Granny would put a load of buck shot in the seat of his britches.

  • Dang! I wanted to hear Ernest T sing "Eatin' Goober Peas"! The "Ernest T" episodes were among the best episodes ever!

  • lol Trust Jesus all today and accept him

  • Anyone ever notice how much Ernest T. looks like Ed Gein?

  • why can't tv be this way again? the good shows r lost but not forgotton!

  • you are stuck in the past... i am glad tv has progressed

  • no, I just like goodf clean tv! I don't like the way the sex all the tv shows, comercials etc up! it is sick!

  • @vickeyk I agree, this is classic humor without all the twisted language and garbage of today.

  • listen to Pants on the Ground sung by General Pratt from American Idol.....sounds the same as this only the lyrics are changed......check it out

  • @vonnatalie It sho 'nuff does.

  • I THINK HE'S A NUT!!!!

  • It's not the end and he doesn't say "Good night". It's when he first throws the rock in and wakes them. "Ernest T. Bass!" He answers "In person!", then he says..."Yer a lowdown, pesky buzzerd!----dawg-gawn ya!" Then E.T. says, "Stix n stones can break my bones but names cain't never tuch me..." LOL!

  • I love at the end of this when Briscoe Darlin bends over in the window and shouts Goodnight to Ernest T...then takes a pregnant pause sand shouts..."Dog gone ya!!!"

  • "Weeeeeeeeee doggies, son, say howdy to my little friend."

  • Wonder how the Clampetts would have delt with Ernest T?

  • "I'm a little mean, but I make up fer it by bein' reeall healthy" freakin hysterical

  • Tennessee fans.

  • Imagine that? From the Andy Griffith show I not only heard "Yo" for the first time(from Goober), but here's Ernest T doing Rap before it was called "Rap". Mayberry Hip Hop....ahead of it's time!

  • You gotta love his smug look when he announces that there may NOT be a weddin. ha! And his little chin-up thing he does. Oh, he was my fav. No wait...Barney. No, Otis... Oh heck.

  • i can do 18 chinups i am the best rock thrower in the county and i am savein up for a gold toth i am the man for you charlene haha the best part

  • Howard Morris was such a funny guy in this role. He was born in New York, but learned how to imitate southern voices while in the Army in North Carolina. He was an old school classical actor. Another thing he is known for is his voice overs used in many cartoons such as the Jetsons and the Flintstones. By the way, he ad-libbed most of his parts on the Andy Griffith show with no real script, and he even wrote and Directed several episodes. What a guy!!!!

  • "You just a thank you having a wedding tomorrow, maybe you ain't"

That's classic *ish talking right there.

  • ...eatin'...goober...peas......huh.

  • My family's favorite AG episodes were when the Darling Family, Otis, Gomer, Floyd and Ernest T. Bass played a big part. Howard Morris was a great TV comedian in the 50s (Your Show of Shows) and he, along with Don Messick, Mel Blanc and Daws Butler, did a ton of cartoon voices.

  • The Andy Griffith Show is discussed in great new bio (All About Jeffrey Hunter) at amazon!

  • The original rapper.

  • Ernest t is a ringer for jeremy piven!!! Must be related!

  • More like Billy Gillespie.

  • The guy playing Ernest T looks a lot like Bill Bixby!

  • I read somewhere they had the same dad but different moms.

  • Richard Dawkins should watch this!

    watch?v=BKmdIdQg3Ks

    :D

  • i dont chew mah cabbage twice ...and you aint heard the last of earnest T bass..

  • i love this(: haha its classic(:

  • one of my favorite scenes in television history

  • OH MY GOSH! we watched this in my english/lit (english and literature are in blocks) and it was awesome! i heard that the guy that played earnest was one of the people who helped write this episode or something, and he played earnest, and made all the lines up as he went along...or atleast that's what my teacher told me.

  • ...and you haven't heard the last of Ernest T. Bass! - LMAO

  • Savin' up for a gold tooth.

That smile of his is HILARIOUS!

  • He makes the show! The show wouldnt be the same without him :D!!!

  • "I don't chew my cabbage twice!"

Barney says this at least once in another episode....great, great line.

  • "It's me it's me! It's Ernest T!" Ernest T. Bass invented rap. Think about it

  • LOL My sister and I memorized Ernest T. Bass's song! I knew all the words to the beating of the can thingy. I miss listening to this clip!

  • Ernest T. Bass and Barney Fife are the funniest characters on the snow! Its too bad that Ernest T. was only in 8 episodes!

  • Howar Morris was brilliant! This came straight off the top of his head, as did the character. Born and raised in NYC, he said he knew nothing about 'country folk' - but he nailed this NUT!

  • I think this is the dawn of rap music :->

  • Love Ernest T Bass.

  • This is one of my most favorite scenes on the show...my son who's 18 years old first watched it 9 years ago and loved it then and loves it now.... lol

  • There is a guy that works at our local grocery store, and I sometimes swear he is Ernest T. Bass reincarnated. Put a beard on Ernest T. and you have this guy. I can't talk to him. He just cracks me up.

  • I predict new meme

  • hahahaha!!! Love his song!!!!

    Michelle.

  • the birth of rap face it its the truth

  • I have some relatives very simular to Ernest T......always is a treat to see an episode with him in it....smooth with the Ladies...he can "chunk" a brick too...

  • Love the Dale Earnhardt (RIP) comment (best driver ever)! Most mountain folks and country folks probably did vote for McCain because they don't need or want the government to take care of them. Let's see what happens if Mr. Obama tries to take their guns!

  • I'm the best rock chunker in the county and I'm saving up for a gold tooth lmfao!

  • what's not that funny about the Ernest T. Bass character is that there really are people like him out there, and I know a few of them.

  • I bet they all voted for McCain

  • nah, they wrote in Dale Earnhardt.

  • lolz

  • Does that matter?

  • what the heck is that supposed to mean

  • and i'm savin up for a gold tooth too :D haha jk

  • don'cha jus love him!!!!

  • It was stated on imdb that Don Knotts may ahve been scared to death by Abe Vigoda (they did an ep of Fantasy Island together). Mash actor McLean Stevenson (it also says at imdb) was scared of fellow actor Conrad Bain (Bain, who like Vigoda, was also on Dark Shadows the vampiresoap).

  • I THINK HE'S A NUT

  • Andy Griffith, a classic show that never gets old. One of my favorite series of all time.

  • I LVE HIM AND HIS SONG !!!

  • I love me some Ernest T Bass. He never gets old.

  • how awesome,so much fun, ya caint help but smile.

  • I'm saving up for a gold tooth, lol

  • Ernest T. Bass is my favorite character from the Andy Griffith Show, Barney being second favorite.

  • Howard Morris was great! A lot of people may know his voice as Jet Screamer (Eep Opp Ork Ah Ah) from the Jetsons.

  • I think he did more voiceovers back then than any other voice artist.

  • hey jimmy crack corn nobody cares what you have to say. you're the only person that has posted something bad about good ol andy on every video i've seen of him.

  • I love the scene before this when Ernest T throws a rock through the window and wakes the entire clan plus Barney and Andy who spent the night to provide protection. Brisco walks up to the window and tells Ernest T to go home, then there's a pregnant pause and he screams out the window, "Doggone ya". The humor loses a little in my attempt to convey this, but it was very funny. Great timing.

  • hahahaha I love when he says "can you see me?" hahaha Howard Morris was the best!

  • I Love Ernest T Bass! Greatest show ever!

  • Yay! Thanks for that!

  • i was in a play "The Mayberry Christmas" we use those characters and we use that song that Ernest T did

  • Howard Morris, what a great trick voice he had! In addition to providing a lot of voices for animation he was also an accomplished film and TV director, and helmed many episodes of "The Andy Griffith Show" and "Gomer Pyle, USMC".

  • No kidding. He was also the cartoon voices of Atom Ant, and Jet Screamer from the Jetsons among others.

  • Now,Ya wanna hear me sing'n Goober Pease?

    George Vreeland Hill

  • I agree....Remember when TV entertained you and made you feel good like this show? You went to bed in a good mood. I think it shows how our society has changed...mostly everything is nasty, cynical and super competitive on TV now. I long for the days of lighthearted entertainment mixed with morals. Never to be seen again

  • Smoothdude17325 - I agree w/you 100%, ain't it sad? ALL I watch is TV LAND and even that is getting too 80's...tsk , tsk, tsk!

  • Thanks for sharing, amandalee7747. One of my favorite episodes of all time! LMAO

  • Ha ha. I wish Howard Morris had done more Ernest T. Bass episodes. He was a busy guy though. Not only did he direct some of the Andy Griffith episodes, but he was also the cartoon voices of Atom Ant, and Jet Screamer (from a Jetsons episode) among others. He sang the song "Eep Opp Ork Ah Ah."

  • ernest t rocks my fav of the show best episode was when he trys to join the army and when he trys to fight malcom the english guy

  • Got any more Ernest T. Bass clips?

  • Eat your heart out Fiddy Cent!
