Found this on a website --"Old Aunt Maria etc etc" was a jumping rope poem from my wife’s childhood in Dequeen, Arkansas. I can’t find the script but I think it went "Obedia jump in the fi-ah." Somehow it got to be "Old Aunt Maria" on the screen.
If I had known that the show would live this long (and that I would live this long) I would’ve paid better attention.
Actually they say that the style of music called "Rap" derived its name from the "Blondie" song, "Rapture". "They" meaning music scholars. But that doesn't mean Ernest T. Bass isn't any less entertaining for what he is! I've seen this episode recently, by the way. I only found my way here because I felt like searching for, "The Darlings vs. The Clampetts". Then I was going to do, "Ernest T. Bass vs. Granny Clampett". Thanks for posting your clips!
If you are familiar with Wikia.. check out the Andy Griffith Show Wiki. It's like Wikipedia, but it's Wikia. It's a VERY awesome site, where me and others have worked so hard to make it the go-to guide for all things TAGS (and R.F.D and Gomer Pyle USMC). It's the Mayberry. Wikia. Com (not the Wikipedia site) but the WIkia one. Stop in, and see all the hard work we've done! :)
I read an interview with Howard Morris a number of years ago. He said the producers gave him the script for this and gave him six weeks to develop the character. He said he worked on the part every single day.
Ernest T: Awright, listen... (He accompanies himself by slapping a large can.) Old Aunt Mariah, jump in the fi-ah, Fire too hot, jump in the pot, Pot too black, jump in the crack, Crack too high, jump in the sky, Sky too blue, jump in canoe, Canoe too shallow, jump in the tallow, Tallow too soft, jump in the loft, Loft too rotten, jump in the cotton, Cotton so white she stay there all night.
@Kalkas53 It sure is. I find it amazing that so many of the cast members live(d) as long as they did. The remaining cast members that I know of are: Charlene Darling, all but one of the 'Darling' boys aka the Dillards, Andy Griffith, Goober(George Lindsey), and Opie(Ron Howard). Barney passed away just 2 yrs ago or so.
Charlene seems pretty tame for a mountain girl,if this were the Clampetts, Ellie May would have challenged Ernest T. to a wrestling match,or else Granny would put a load of buck shot in the seat of his britches.
It's not the end and he doesn't say "Good night". It's when he first throws the rock in and wakes them. "Ernest T. Bass!" He answers "In person!", then he says..."Yer a lowdown, pesky buzzerd!----dawg-gawn ya!" Then E.T. says, "Stix n stones can break my bones but names cain't never tuch me..." LOL!
I love at the end of this when Briscoe Darlin bends over in the window and shouts Goodnight to Ernest T...then takes a pregnant pause sand shouts..."Dog gone ya!!!"
Imagine that? From the Andy Griffith show I not only heard "Yo" for the first time(from Goober), but here's Ernest T doing Rap before it was called "Rap". Mayberry Hip Hop....ahead of it's time!
You gotta love his smug look when he announces that there may NOT be a weddin. ha! And his little chin-up thing he does. Oh, he was my fav. No wait...Barney. No, Otis... Oh heck.
Howard Morris was such a funny guy in this role. He was born in New York, but learned how to imitate southern voices while in the Army in North Carolina. He was an old school classical actor. Another thing he is known for is his voice overs used in many cartoons such as the Jetsons and the Flintstones. By the way, he ad-libbed most of his parts on the Andy Griffith show with no real script, and he even wrote and Directed several episodes. What a guy!!!!
My family's favorite AG episodes were when the Darling Family, Otis, Gomer, Floyd and Ernest T. Bass played a big part. Howard Morris was a great TV comedian in the 50s (Your Show of Shows) and he, along with Don Messick, Mel Blanc and Daws Butler, did a ton of cartoon voices.
OH MY GOSH! we watched this in my english/lit (english and literature are in blocks) and it was awesome! i heard that the guy that played earnest was one of the people who helped write this episode or something, and he played earnest, and made all the lines up as he went along...or atleast that's what my teacher told me.
Howar Morris was brilliant! This came straight off the top of his head, as did the character. Born and raised in NYC, he said he knew nothing about 'country folk' - but he nailed this NUT!
This is one of my most favorite scenes on the show...my son who's 18 years old first watched it 9 years ago and loved it then and loves it now.... lol
There is a guy that works at our local grocery store, and I sometimes swear he is Ernest T. Bass reincarnated. Put a beard on Ernest T. and you have this guy. I can't talk to him. He just cracks me up.

Love the Dale Earnhardt (RIP) comment (best driver ever)! Most mountain folks and country folks probably did vote for McCain because they don't need or want the government to take care of them. Let's see what happens if Mr. Obama tries to take their guns!
It was stated on imdb that Don Knotts may ahve been scared to death by Abe Vigoda (they did an ep of Fantasy Island together). Mash actor McLean Stevenson (it also says at imdb) was scared of fellow actor Conrad Bain (Bain, who like Vigoda, was also on Dark Shadows the vampiresoap).
hey jimmy crack corn nobody cares what you have to say. you're the only person that has posted something bad about good ol andy on every video i've seen of him.
I love the scene before this when Ernest T throws a rock through the window and wakes the entire clan plus Barney and Andy who spent the night to provide protection. Brisco walks up to the window and tells Ernest T to go home, then there's a pregnant pause and he screams out the window, "Doggone ya". The humor loses a little in my attempt to convey this, but it was very funny. Great timing.
During every election, here comes Andy Griffith to North Carolina, doing commercials and telling North Carolinians to vote for the democrat for Governor. Well Andy Griffith, why don't you stay in Helliwood where you belong and stay out of North Carolina politics, since you haven't lived here in over 50 years! What would be a "GOOOOOOOOD!" thing, is for You to shut your mouth! Sing us one of those gospel songs Andy, you BABY KILLING ABORTIONIST!

I think it shows how our society has changed...mostly everything is nasty, cynical and super competitive on TV now. I long for the days of lighthearted entertainment mixed with morals. Never to be seen again
Ha ha. I wish Howard Morris had done more Ernest T. Bass episodes. He was a busy guy though. Not only did he direct some of the Andy Griffith episodes, but he was also the cartoon voices of Atom Ant, and Jet Screamer (from a Jetsons episode) among others. He sang the song "Eep Opp Ork Ah Ah."
Does anyone have a clip of season 1 episode called the guitarman where James best from the Dukes of hazard played a great song at the end. I would love to get that song video clip
Ernest T.Bass, Barnie Fife and The Darlings are my favorite characters and even though this show was well before my time I have fond memories of watching The Andy Griffith show with my family. True classic tv!
Ernest T. was always my favorite character on that show. I'm 52 years old and sometimes I still holler at folks, "You ain't seen the last of Ernest T. Bass!"
This was television at its BEST! Everyone old and young could enjoy it and you didn't have to worry about language or content. I only wish Ernest T. Bass was in more episodes. He was THE BEST!
OMG that was TOO funny!I dont remember seeing this one! I thought I had seen all the Ernest T ones, he was so so funny! thanks for putting that out there! :)
This is funny stuff! Anyone that doesn't like the Andy Griffith Show with Barney, Gomer, Ernest T. Bass and the rest of the cast of characters isn't American.
Who in their right ming would dislike ANY of these B&W Andy Griffith Shows?????

This is funny stuff! Anyone that doesn't like the Andy Griffith Show with Barney, Gomer, Ernest T. Bass and the rest of the cast of characters isn't American.
