I know this video is old, but it comes with a lot of sacrifice with being natural. With that being said its learning how to do different styles with the texture your hair is.
You have me cracking up because I did the BC 5 weeks ago and I know how you feel. I love that I went natural BUT I HATE having to deal with my hair. I'm going to get braids in an effort to just not be bothered. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR KEEPING IT REAL!!! I thought I was the only one feeling this way. I've spent all this money on products that seem to work for others and I've listened to the reviews only to be disappointed at the results--BUT I AM GOING TO STAY NATURAL AND work with it.
I wish I could put my hair in a nice afro puff like you have. I've just bc'd Dec. 1. It's growing and I've found myself cutting off the straggly ends. Only to see it growing back the same way. So, you have to get to know your texture and how your hair grows. I had no idea my hair coiled which makes it hard to untangle. I tried to blow dry and my hair acted like it was resisting the heat. Plus, some of the product you are use to using won't work on your natural hair.
THANK YOU!!! OMG! This is exactly how I feel! I think we have the same hair texture and length b/c all I can seem to do is a puff too (b/c my hair does NOT come out all curly and bouncy when I just wash'n'go). The styles I see in these tutorials are just not working out for me and don't even get me started on blowing it out. Lord, help us all! lol I'm hoping I just need more length & patience b/c I didn't deal w/ all of this when I relaxed my hair. THANK YOU for saying something!
I don't have your hair texture, but i can relate to you. my hair is around 3a/b, but it's like a poodle/lion mane, fluffy, frizzy. I cannot relax my hair because it's too soft so i have to be natural. i have the same issues that you have discussed about your hair in this video. It is hard, but i've learned to stop fighting with it and just let it be sometimes; style it when necessary but let it hang later. It does get tangle when i do this but it beats fighting with it. and lifeisagift1990 is right.
shrunken. Now, a year later, it's 7 inches stretched and 3 inches shrunken. So I embrace my shrinkage, knowing that at this time next year, my hair will have grown to about 12 inches, and my styles will hang or rise about 6 shrunken inches from my scalp. Then the next year 18 and 9 inches, etc etc etc. Natural hair is sooo easy when u let it do what it do. And, yeah it takes patience, but the beauty of natural hair is well worth it.
these styles easy is my attitude. If I'm know it's gonna be humid, rather than wearing my hair loose and getting upset when it shrinks, I choose protective styling, which I find doesn't shrink, cause it's already shrunken. I'm not saying naturals should be satisfied with short hair, but I do think that patience is the better part of valor. I remember that when I bc'd, my hair was 2 inches stretched and flat against my scalp
trying to make my hair do what it would not normally do - namely stretch and stay stretched. When I put my twists in I expect them to hang about 3 inches shrunken, and that's exactly what they do. It's not anything I do to the twists that make them easy, it's my attitude that makes them easy. When I wear a twistout or fro, I know my 7 inch hair is gonna rise about 2-3 inches from my scalp. Again, what makes wearing
Hey Mscubanlink. I have this type of hair texture as well. I have been one year completely natural as of Oct 2010. I transitioned for 4 months. My shrinkage is at least 50%. So right now, I have 7 inches of hair stretched out, which when not stretched out measures about 3 inches shrunken. I spend about 5 hours every 2 weeks or 10 hours per month poo'ing and condishing my hair, which I normally wear in single 2 strand twists. I find that what makes dealing with my hair easier, is not
Thank you thank you thank you! I have the same hair type as yours and I go through the same struggles! A lot of the natural vids on youtube are like 3a to 4a's. This made me feel soo much better!!
Mscubanlink24, I hope that you continue to search and find new styles, to your fancy. I'm similar to you in the regard of wanting to do nothing, i.e. locks. LOL. I think the problem for me was that I didn't know how to manage my very long hair with a relaxer. If I had watched YT videos, I would have hung in there, attempted to repair the damage. With that said, it's been 2 years since I shaved my head. It's interesting indeed. But I can't imagine going back.
I think you have beautiful natural hair. This is such an encourgment to me. Please stick with it and don't give up. I absolutely love your naturalness. Thanks for being real!

damn you took the words out of my mouth. Its fun to do the twists and stuff but it gets old real quick. I love my natural hair but it can be a hassle. I can't wear it out...it will shrink all crazy...cant straighten because it always gets frizzy...so im stuck with the puff too! I've been natural for two years and i dont want to loc up or cut it off...
I do feel you on the reason why people get relaxers, lol! This will be my first time going natural. I know this is an old video, but I will definately keep this in consideration. Thanks for the different point of view. I have posted a few video's on my page transitioning.
I know what you mean. It is important to know that you have to be very strong and determined to stay natural cause learning to take care of one's hair is important.
Girl I got the same texture and every time i say I'm giving up everybody that don't have my texture say to stay strong. It is very very hard. When I saw the title of your video I had to watch it. Girl you speak the truth!!!
Having locks does not mean you dont have to do nothing with it... that is a MYTH... you do have to BE PATIENT and focus on your hair not anyone else. Keep it going sister, don't give up. You want to hear frustration check this out - (youtube wont let me post the link... will message it to u) I BEEN THROUGH EVERYTHING... even my hair getting caught on fire...
yes natural hair is hard work, but I have a very kinky curl texture. I will continue to wear my hair natural. I have a problem with shrinkage after shampooing my hair. so I understand and if I blowdry it I can feel the damage ends. I will try to cut my hair and get it to the healthy natural state. I totally understand how you feel sometimes I just want to cut it off and start over from scratch.
I just did my BC last month and this is my third time. Like you, I was frustrated and would put perms in my hair, but I am slowly learning. I hope for the best in your journey.
I feel you gurl!!!! I did my first BC August 2008 and I was natural for 13 months!!! It was a struggle!!! I have the same texture as you! I relaxed it October 2009 and I hated it!!! I did 2 relaxers then I did another BC this month!! What I decided to do this go round is loc my hair!!!!! Natural hair is alooooot of work!!! And all these people on YouTube will have you broke trying out all these expensive products!!!
i agree, it's not easy, but it becomes more manageable once you figure your hair out. frustrations come, when you don't know what to do, can't find anything that works, and not having the patience to do so. i think we all go through being frustrated, but i hope that you remain strong and don't give up. your hair doesn't retain moisture well, do drink enough water? because it took me some time to realize when i didn't drink enough my hair was drier to, just something to think about good luck
I agree. Being natural is not necessarily easy. I have had and still have some days when I'm like REALLY!!!! Thanks for being sure that people know exactly what they are getting into.
I went natural because I thought my new growth was pretty and I didn't give a damn if it really looks like I had been electrocuted, lol. I think I am abnormally in love with my hair hair texture and so I don't really pay much attention to any problems or time consumption that it causes.
I actually think that my hair is kinkier than yours and it doesn't frustrate me at all now. However in the beginning (I've been natural about 2 1/2 yrs) I did have a problem with excessive dryness, but I don't have the problem at all anymore. I think that some of your & other newly naturals' frustrations is that you were expecting your hair to be like someone else.
you are correct...I just did my big chop in November and in a way it is more work. I think keeping it moisturized is the main part. I have a twa right now so I don't know exactly how it will be trying to keep it moisturized when it grows out. right now I use Karen body beautiful and hawiian silky and it keeps it moisturize. the real test is when I start wearing it out in public. we'll see....right now I either were braids or I do a quickweave
I have your texture of hair and I really don't have many frustrations with my hair. It is as easy as you make. And it depends on what your goals are when it comes to your natural hair. I'm happier with my natural hair than I was with relaxed hair b/c I have more versatility (kinky, curly, coily, & straight styles). With relaxed hair, yeah, it may have been easy at times but I was not as happy, I didn't get as much growth, and all I could do was straight styles. Sera is my main inspiration!
I'd say its 4b/4a type. Still learning what works for me and it takes TIME..Moisturizing is a problem as well and The Qhemet Biologics line work good for me (but its pretty pricey).. Dealing with my hair when its stretched (without use of heat) is easier for me. Twists are very time consuming but I love the results. Have you tried twist or braids on dry/stretched hair? Thank you for keeping it real.
@quest2bfree: I absolutely agree with you about the twists...My main goal is health, growth, and length retention so twists are the prefect protective style for me other than roller sets. I'm 3c/4a/4b. My main inspiration is Sera who has mainly 4a or 4b hair and is very long and healthy. I think my texture is the best and not at all difficult (now). My growth motivates me! Nice comment!
You r not alone with these feelings..My natural hair is and up n down experience. Although I dont plan to relax again I have my monents, I'm talking weekly, were I just want to throw in the towel. Watching vids during my transition I thought I'd have type 3 hair lol and I imagined all the wash n go's I'd do, such a simple easy style right? But my hair don't do that lol...
OMGoodness.....thank you so much for posting!!! I continue to look all over the internet for people with my hairtype doing different styles. I have been natural for about a year and 4 months, but have been wearing tracks. I just started wearing my hair natural and it is not easy to manage as you have stated. Your hair has grown very well. Would you mind sharing what products you normally use? I have issues with moisturizing my hair as well...and tip on that?!?! Thanks again for being real!
ok... my hair is natural and about your length, yes it is different try other styles.. i twist my hair i wear afro puffs and you just got to do your styles that you like
Your honesty is refreshing and did not realize how much work went into the textures I saw on fotki and youtube until I had already did my big chop and I was faced with dry crispy itchy hair with a Z pattern. Over time and learing how to properly moisturize it's better now but today i had a slight headache cause my puff was a little tight. I have been there and it's only been 6 months for me! whatever decision you make will be right for you
its not easy to have permed hair when the perm itself is break your hair off horribly like it did mine. i dont have anything against perms. just taking a break from them...maybe permanently or when i find one my hair can deal with. but i totally understand this video. *4 months into the transition*
I have 4a/b hair with some 3c pieces and it is a struggle at times but it is one I do NOT regret. I'm still looking for a moisturizer that will last once my hair is dry because my hair doesn't hold moisture either
Love the title..."natural is not easy"...For many people it sure isn't.
To "naturals" who put down relaxers :
Stop using scare tactics, like the NaOH theory, to convince other people to stop using relaxer. I think it's prerogative if some women want to use relaxers, let them. I see a lot of naturals in videos pulling their hair straight with heat and sprays and gels that are not natural at all, while putting down relaxers for not being natural. Straightening in any form is not natural.
i AM NATURAL yikes my hair is like my life a work in progress I spent so much money on products now now i am into my protective styles braids wigs and extensions
I find beeswax work for me after all the other products and gels i have bought
I had a problem with keeping it styled and so forth, I have finally found a style I could work with- the two strand twist done on wet hair using either Eco Styler Olive Oil gel or Shea butter. The smaller the two strand the longer the style can be maintained. After you finish just jump in the shower and rinse it through to get the twist to lay down and voila! You can just sleep with a bonnet or scarf and it normally last two-three weeks.
when i first went natural, 2 products i used to keep moisture in my hair was the biolage hydrating conditioner that you can get from a salon or beauty brands and the sta-sof-fro spray that you can get from walmart, kmart, etc. those 2 helped me alot! and i doubt that ur hair could much drier than mine was back then
I think natural hair is work like any other hair type is. With afro textured natural hair we are really forced to accept what we have and work with it and not against it. I think that's what so many of us struggle with. Ya know? The wash n go isn't for every hair type. But I'm glad that you were honest. It's not a walkin the park every day but neither is it alwayswith any type hair.
sometimes isn't easy. i am continuing the search for te products that i will like. high heat will damage your curl pattern. i have a lot of issues bc my curl pattern is so tight. i have to braid or twist it each night so that i will not have a lot of damage to my hair
You're absolutely right, natural hair is not easy for everyone depending on your texture. I'm 4b and must twist my hair every night (what a pain) to get a decent twist-out the way I like it. It's a difficult journey BUT I will continue to embrace it and I WILL NOT straighten or relax. I'm glad you're keeping it real though, cause it's good to have someone to relate to. I rarely even watch videos with the type 3 sisters. I love them, but they're videos can't help me! LOL!
Your ABSOLUTELY right... it can be frustrating at times.. but youtuber naturals helps alot with the various hairstyles, products., ie;.. But I feel Ya 100%.... The sharing... helps alot... Stay Strong!! lol :-)
Lolol...you are sooo right. I have 4b/a hair and I stopped watching natural hair care videos from ppl with a 3abc texture. I just try to stick with 4a/b vids unless I'm looking at them for style bc what the 3's do to their hair often does not work for 4's. Like others have said you just need to find products that are right for your hair. My mom is natural straight 4b and she swears by 911 Emergency Leave in Condish n Shea butter to comb her hair after washing.
Someone finally being real!!! Girl, I totally agree with u... natural hair is definitely not easy for a 4b/4c!! I feel ya chile!! During the winter I've been doing twist outs and puffs so I don't have to constantly wet my hair. when it's not cold, KCCC is the only thing that I've found that keeps my hair from looking dry and shrunk up! LOL The application process for that is horrible and drying time is even worse... altho its hard work, i'm trying to stay natural and keep in nappy! :-)
i agree with you 1000% great video natural hair isnt easy, i have like 4a (with a bit of 3c here and there) i think you need to just work with your hair a bit more everyone has struggles until they find what works for them. i know a lot of naturals put products in hair wet, that doesnt work for me i have to put my moisturizer on dry hair, so maybe you can try that what works for one person doesnt work for another. either way i love the honesty in the video.
have you tried styling your hair in double strand twists?? They are great for protective styling and can last up to two weeks ... and you can do them yourself.
thank you for presenting another side of natural hair but anything is possible-with much patience and effort. experiment with headwraps, other natural styles like, kinky twist, nubian knots (china bumps), various designs of corn rows- there is maaaad styles out there..or u can rock wigs when u want a change.
i know u think her hair is gorgeous because its a looser curl- but lets not get into the thinking that the kinkier the less admirable or beautiful. no u dont need a texturizer, You definetly need patience- ANYTHING NATURAL requires patience.
Thanks for your honesty. I wish I had YOUR hair! It's thick & gorgeous!!! I wear my hair out in a Fro Everyday, I have 4a/4b. Wish it was thicker tho!
You make a valid point about natural hair not being "easy", but I don't think that permed hair is easy either. I think the natural hair journey is an ever evolving one..it is all about trial & error. I do think that it is important for women who are considering going natural to have realistic expectations about their hair. Your natural hair may not be as curly or wavy like some other black women and that's fine. You have to learn how to work with your hair. Remain patient & keep an open mind :)
I agree with you OMG I just took my braids out today after a whole 2 months. Its grown so much but all of a sudden I don't know what to do with it lol. I tried to blow dry it..impossible! and I can't do my usual wash n go. It is hard work. Beautiful hair by the way dear
Also...NaturalhairGrwthShow girl from England is struggling with her hair too. See her vid Natural Hair Rut. I know if I start having doubts I'll want to connect w/ someone who has felt the same way and not make me feel like a traitor for doubting my decision to be natural. Good Luck. You're NOT alone!
You are not the only one. Check out Pinkperpetual she has a video called I Hate My Natural Hair. Might help you to see someone else's struggle and maybe encourage each other?
Thanks for your honesty. I hope you don't go back to chemicals. Why not rock it shorter? You have a BEAUTIFUL face that can really rock a short TWA. In the end do YOU. I wish you the best!!!!
You sound like me! And LOL on the convo with the moms.
My resolution for this year is to try two strand twisting my hair (I have heard another subscriber say it is better to two strang 4b hair when dry). I am also trying to learn how to braid...but I need a head to experiment on in additon to my own! Sometimes I try to be smart and use headbands of some kind to spice up my fro. Have you tried virgin coconut oil or any of the other oil for moisture?
I completely agree, but with time you will learn what works for you hair. I've been natural 2 years and I felt the same way at first. But stick with it!!!!
I've been natural for 20 years. It's not harder or easier than permed hair. When i had a permed i wore a ponytail, and when i went natural i wore the afropuff cuz simplicity works for me. Each person defines what is hard or easy by how much time and patience they have. Both styles can be high maintenance. Some like to play with hair and experiment with different styles and textures. Others, like me, never developed a love affair with hair that makes one spend lots of time in the mirror.
Your hair is beautiful. It is thick and healthy. I have been natural for 8 months and I can relate to how you feel. I am now trying to find some wigs because my hair is at a stage that it is not a twa, but it is not long so requires more effort to look good. I have been everywhere with my hair including locks and it is all a process. People loved my 8 yr locks, but did not know what it took to get that length. Stay with it girl, you will get where you want to be. Thanks for the honesty.
It can be frustrating at times but this is easier for me so far (last relaxer was Nov. 2008). When I was relaxed my hair never co-operated with me. Its always been thick and I just couldn't seem to master wrapping it. One side was always lop sided or didn't curl like the other side. My hair is very hard to keep moisturized as well, relaxed or natural..so I'm experimenting with mixing my own moisturizer. And that is great that you're being honest. Don't give up, you'll find something that works.
Girl you had me crackin up! lol You right though, everybody can't just wet, shake and go. I wish you the best in whatever you decide to do with your hair. It's so thick and soft lookin.
Natural hair is tough and is a challenging journey. Maybe you should try doing half wigs or some other types of protective styles. I have been natural for a year & half now and half wigs and phony ponies are the way to go for me. I'm not sure I would still be natural without them because sometimes you just get tired of dealing with the natural hair.
I'm still on a product hunt to use as a daily regimen. but so far whats working for me is a mix of shea butt, coconut oil and veg glycerin along with a lil aloe gel (all product are about $7-10 depending on where you buy them and what size you get) mixed with water and use it as a daily spray. I also only shampoo about once a month and co wash once a week some times more depending on how my hair is feeling. I'm looking for suggesions as well.
It is really tough. I've just started this video thing with you tube...I hope to join you because I have the same problem... have you tried twisting your hair up at night? Its worked for me so far.
I've been feeling the SAME way you're feeling. Been struggling with "Do i perm, do I lock up again, weave it, braid it?". It's maddness girl. I've been just twisting and wearing fro's...good luck with the hair. All your hair needs is a lil tender loving care...
you are right its very hard when you are in the 4b area such as myself. moisture is a challenge but shea butter, olive oil, and veg glycerin & water helps a lot. i do not really get the great wash n go look w/o loading lots of product. however i do like blackonyx videos because she do lots of sytles on dry hair that is stretched out. you have to get a routine down that works for you. but i can't complain too much because I do a lot of protective styles.
So true girl lol. make sure you don't have migrains before you loc up if you make that choice. I had to give up my sister locs, be blessed in what ever road you take for your hair just keep it healthy that's what count in the end.
still i feel you. kinky hair knots up and shrinks alot and if you don't know how to deal with it and properly moisturize it; it is a nightmare and can be difficult.
i've learned that braidouts does wonders for my hair by stretching it out (unlike twist outs); thus reducing knots.
i've also discovered that pre-pooing with evoo and sheabutter moisturizes my hair for days.
I definitely appreciate your honesty here. Whenever it is that I start doing vids...1 of my 1st ones will probably be in response to this one. I can so relate. My hair also does NOT behave like KittyKat's hair. I also thought we had the same textures. Actually, our curl pattern is the same. But hers looks to be a little silkier than mine and thus, my hair behaves/responds differently. I won't say natural hair ain't easy...but it does take some "getting used to".
Everyones hair texture is different. The good thing about youtube is there is an abundance of women with different textured hair giving great info on hair care. I think an important part of the natural hair journey is embracing your hairs natural texture and learning to care for it. Its good 2 see u. ;D peace
I think our texture is similar. The longer my hair gets, the more I have to battle dryness and breakage. I used to get by with just vit E oil/olive oil and water. Not so much now. I think our hair is about the same length, as well. I messed up and colored mine a few months ago, so that added to the dryness. I've found that dampening it with veg glycerine and twisting it with shea butter EVERY night really helps.
I agree that we can't expect for our hair to look like those that we see. You hair growth was an inspiration to me and now I think being natural is easier than being in the salon regularly ;)
Some people are just not into hair. When my hair was shorter, I could wash and go and it would dry very fast. I think long hair is harder to manage than short hair, but that is a risk I am willing to take. I want to see my hair's potential. I look for videos that relate to my hair type. Some people have already firgured it out, so we don't have to. Keep searching. You will find your way.
i'm an all or nothing kinda girl so straightening is not an option for me. i love my natural hair BUT GIRL BE NATURAL IS NOT EASY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank God i'm single because i'm vein and there is no way i would let my man see me in a bonnet i'm sorry i wouldnt. and before anyone comments i know about satin pillows but i never had to do all that stuff when i had a relaxer. i'm done rambling thanx for the vid
Amen girl i'm not going to lie styled gel in my hair is fire but i'm having a problem with my hair that i've never had before; my hair is dry dry dry i and gets really smashed at night i wake up looking a hot mess, i'm sick of bonnets, oiling ect... i didnt have to do all that when i had a relaxer and my hair was down my back.
thats how i wear my hair too... puffs and single braids, you should try those to they show length and it makes it easy to manage your hair all you have to do it braid the singles which takes around 4 hrs for me and it lasts around 2 months if you take care of it :-) try it out lol
Thank you so much for this video.I feel the same way.I have the hardest time doing all of the styles I see on you tube and I wind up doing the same twist out puff everyday .
i feel u im at the point now my twist in gos are ugly i wear a puff everyday

And, yeah it takes patience, but the beauty of natural hair is well worth it.

trying to make my hair do what it would not normally do - namely stretch and stay stretched. I find that what makes dealing with my hair easier, is not

the only thing I do is little twist and thats take me 2- 4 hours every second week
the first week i do the twist and the second week i do the twist out.
nothing else work for me.
But girl keep it up, because you if you decide to straighten you hair
I'm do the same. You are the only one with the same texture I have.
So don't let me down girl KEEP IT UP

Mscubanlink24, I hope that you continue to search and find new styles, to your fancy. I'm similar to you in the regard of wanting to do nothing, i.e. locks. LOL. I think the problem for me was that I didn't know how to manage my very long hair with a relaxer. If I had watched YT videos, I would have hung in there, attempted to repair the damage. With that said, it's been 2 years since I shaved my head. It's interesting indeed. But I can't imagine going back.

damn you took the words out of my mouth.

I totally understand how you feel sometimes I just want to cut it off and start over from scratch.

msnoirepetite 2 years ago
you should experiment more with your natural hair.
mizzcarmel26 2 years ago
i agree, it's not easy, but it becomes more manageable once you figure your hair out. frustrations come, when you don't know what to do, can't find anything that works, and not having the patience to do so. i think we all go through being frustrated, but i hope that you remain strong and don't give up. your hair doesn't retain moisture well, do drink enough water? because it took me some time to realize when i didn't drink enough my hair was drier to, just something to think about good luck

I went natural because I thought my new growth was pretty and I didn't give a damn if it really looks like I had been electrocuted, lol. I think I am abnormally in love with my hair hair texture and so I don't really pay much attention to any problems or time consumption that it causes.
msminnie89 2 years ago
I actually think that my hair is kinkier than yours and it doesn't frustrate me at all now. However in the beginning (I've been natural about 2 1/2 yrs) I did have a problem with excessive dryness, but I don't have the problem at all anymore. I think that some of your & other newly naturals' frustrations is that you were expecting your hair to be like someone else.
msminnie89 2 years ago
you are correct...I just did my big chop in November and in a way it is more work.
720ent 2 years ago
Thank you...I feel you. I'm in the same situation. I'm sooooo fraustrated!
MrsTee333 2 years ago
I have your texture of hair and I really don't have many frustrations with my hair. It is as easy as you make. And it depends on what your goals are when it comes to your natural hair. I'm happier with my natural hair than I was with relaxed hair b/c I have more versatility (kinky, curly, coily, & straight styles). With relaxed hair, yeah, it may have been easy at times but I was not as happy, I didn't get as much growth, and all I could do was straight styles. Sera is my main inspiration!
babyshuf2 2 years ago
I'd say its 4b/4a type. Still learning what works for me and it takes TIME..Moisturizing is a problem as well and The Qhemet Biologics line work good for me (but its pretty pricey).. Dealing with my hair when its stretched (without use of heat) is easier for me. Twists are very time consuming but I love the results. Have you tried twist or braids on dry/stretched hair? Thank you for keeping it real.
quest2bfree 2 years ago
@quest2bfree: I absolutely agree with you about the twists...My main goal is health, growth, and length retention so twists are the prefect protective style for me other than roller sets. I'm 3c/4a/4b. My main inspiration is Sera who has mainly 4a or 4b hair and is very long and healthy. I think my texture is the best and not at all difficult (now). My growth motivates me! Nice comment!
babyshuf2 2 years ago
You r not alone with these feelings..My natural hair is and up n down experience. Although I dont plan to relax again I have my monents, I'm talking weekly, were I just want to throw in the towel. Watching vids during my transition I thought I'd have type 3 hair lol and I imagined all the wash n go's I'd do, such a simple easy style right? But my hair don't do that lol...
quest2bfree 2 years ago
OMGoodness.....thank you so much for posting!!! I continue to look all over the internet for people with my hairtype doing different styles. I have been natural for about a year and 4 months, but have been wearing tracks. I just started wearing my hair natural and it is not easy to manage as you have stated. Your hair has grown very well. Would you mind sharing what products you normally use? I have issues with moisturizing my hair as well...and tip on that?!?! Thanks again for being real!

ok... my hair is natural and about your length, yes it is different try other styles.. i twist my hair i wear afro puffs and you just got to do your styles that you like
gregkim1977 2 years ago

You can just sleep with a bonnet or scarf and it normally last two-three weeks.

when i first went natural, 2 products i used to keep moisture in my hair was the biolage hydrating conditioner that you can get from a salon or beauty brands and the sta-sof-fro spray that you can get from walmart, kmart, etc. those 2 helped me alot! and i doubt that ur hair could much drier than mine was back then
lmlpm7 2 years ago
I think natural hair is work like any other hair type is. With afro textured natural hair we are really forced to accept what we have and work with it and not against it. I think that's what so many of us struggle with. Ya know? The wash n go isn't for every hair type. But I'm glad that you were honest. It's not a walkin the park every day but neither is it alwayswith any type hair.

NaturalBeauty0708 2 years ago
You're absolutely right, natural hair is not easy for everyone depending on your texture. I'm 4b and must twist my hair every night (what a pain) to get a decent twist-out the way I like it. It's a difficult journey BUT I will continue to embrace it and I WILL NOT straighten or relax. I'm glad you're keeping it real though, cause it's good to have someone to relate to.

During the winter I've been doing twist outs and puffs so I don't have to constantly wet my hair. when it's not cold, KCCC is the only thing that I've found that keeps my hair from looking dry and shrunk up! i agree with you 1000% great video natural hair isnt easy, i have like 4a (with a bit of 3c here and there) i think you need to just work with your hair a bit more everyone has struggles until they find what works for them. i know a lot of naturals put products in hair wet, that doesnt work for me i have to put my moisturizer on dry hair, so maybe you can try that what works for one person doesnt work for another. either way i love the honesty in the video.

Have you tried virgin coconut oil or any of the other oil for moisture?
sand07228 2 years ago
I completely agree, but with time you will learn what works for you hair. I've been natural 2 years and I felt the same way at first. But stick with it!!!!
NaturalDiva16 2 years ago
I've been natural for 20 years. It's not harder or easier than permed hair. When i had a permed i wore a ponytail, and when i went natural i wore the afropuff cuz simplicity works for me. Each person defines what is hard or easy by how much time and patience they have. Both styles can be high maintenance. Some like to play with hair and experiment with different styles and textures. Others, like me, never developed a love affair with hair that makes one spend lots of time in the mirror.
cantsingalick 2 years ago
Your hair is beautiful. It is thick and healthy. I have been natural for 8 months and I can relate to how you feel. I am now trying to find some wigs because my hair is at a stage that it is not a twa, but it is not long so requires more effort to look good. I have been everywhere with my hair including locks and it is all a process. People loved my 8 yr locks, but did not know what it took to get that length. Stay with it girl, you will get where you want to be. Thanks for the honesty.

lolipop2004 2 years ago
It can be frustrating at times but this is easier for me so far (last relaxer was Nov. 2008). When I was relaxed my hair never co-operated with me. Its always been thick and I just couldn't seem to master wrapping it. One side was always lop sided or didn't curl like the other side. My hair is very hard to keep moisturized as well, relaxed or natural..so I'm experimenting with mixing my own moisturizer. And that is great that you're being honest. Don't give up, you'll find something that works.

Natural hair is tough and is a challenging journey. Maybe you should try doing half wigs or some other types of protective styles.

I've been feeling the SAME way you're feeling. Been struggling with "Do i perm, do I lock up again, weave it, braid it?". It's maddness girl. I've been just twisting and wearing fro's...good luck with the hair. All your hair needs is a lil tender loving care...

you are right its very hard when you are in the 4b area such as myself. moisture is a challenge but shea butter, olive oil, and veg glycerin & water helps a lot. i do not really get the great wash n go look w/o loading lots of product. however i do like blackonyx videos because she do lots of sytles on dry hair that is stretched out. you have to get a routine down that works for you. but i can't complain too much because I do a lot of protective styles.

still i feel you. kinky hair knots up and shrinks alot and if you don't know how to deal with it and properly moisturize it; it is a nightmare and can be difficult.
i've learned that braidouts does wonders for my hair by stretching it out (unlike twist outs); thus reducing knots.
i've also discovered that pre-pooing with evoo and sheabutter moisturizes my hair for days.

for me having relaxed hair wasn't easy.
all i could do was put my hair (if it was long enough - usually it wasn't do to hair loss) or flat iron my hair.
i never could wrap my hair & i hated sitting under the dryer for roller sets.
with natural hair, i can do twist outs, braid outs, flat twist outs, and puffs without much skill. i have a lot more options.
tqhous2 2 years ago 2
have you tried braidouts? they stretch out your hair, esp if you use evoo & shea butter.
tqhous2 2 years ago 2
I definitely appreciate your honesty here. Whenever it is that I start doing vids...1 of my 1st ones will probably be in response to this one. I can so relate. My hair also does NOT behave like KittyKat's hair. I also thought we had the same textures. Actually, our curl pattern is the same. But hers looks to be a little silkier than mine and thus, my hair behaves/responds differently. I won't say natural hair ain't easy...but it does take some "getting used to".
Kookie28Krisp 2 years ago
Everyones hair texture is different. The good thing about youtube is there is an abundance of women with different textured hair giving great info on hair care. I think an important part of the natural hair journey is embracing your hairs natural texture and learning to care for it. Its good 2 see u. ;D peace

faeluv25 2 years ago
Oh MY GOODNESS!!! AMEN!
LOL@4:00-4:05.
