The Cantonese flavor could be also be due to player inflection or because this piece was composed in the 50's by members the Guangxi Ensemble. The best way to see a traditional maguhu performance is to visit Western Guangxi, esp. Baise Precinct, during the lunar 三月三 March 3rd festival and find out where performances of either Northern or Southern Zhuang Opera are taking place.

My friend in Guilin sent me a 2006 book about the maguhu by Su Shaning (苏沙宁), entitled 骨胡艺术 (The Art of the Bone Fiddle).

It's part of the 中国民族音乐研究书系 series, published in Beijing in 2006 by 中国文联出版社.

It's really true anywhere you go in the world that the deep traditional music isn't really known to most people, and you have to hunt to find it. His playing sounds very Cantonese in style.

I agree. For most of the instruments in my site even people here in Hong Kong have never heard of them. I'm glad that I'm lucky enough to be able to own some of those.

Yes his playing is having some Cantonese mood. Afterall Nanning's main dialect is also Cantonese.

Wow, maguhu (马骨胡) on YouTube! Thanks for putting this up. I would love to see more of this, especially the Zhuang Bayin music, which even my friend in Guilin can't find on video.

Yes it was really difficult to find. I was so lucky to have met Mr. Huang Kun-nan in Nanning, Guangxi a few years ago and requested a demo from him.
