Few points of criticism:
1. The Dr claims that chemical imbalance is just PR, but not only many researches showed how hormonal dysfunction nutritional deficiencies can cause such imbalance and depression, he later even contradict himself, as you will see by the following points of criticism.
2. "We can't even measure the brain activity" says the Dr. Well, EEG, MRI and PET are doing a wonderful job with measuring different aspects of brain activity.

@itamarberman 3. The Dr. claims we cannot prove chemical imbalance - well its pretty easy with the tools I've mentioned earlier. Many researches use them to compare healthy subjects against depressive subjects, for example.
4. The Dr claims the only known chemical imbalance is caused by psychiatric medicine. Well - he said earlier there's no such thing. Also, many researches have shown "chemical imbalances" with psychiatric subject which were not medicated.

@itamarberman 5. The Dr claims no research have ever showed a correlation between genetics and psychiatric disorders. This is quite outrageous given the abundance of researches who showed exactly this. It is true however, that depression has quite a weak correlation with genetics, compared to disorders such as bipolar disorder, for example.

@itamarberman 6. The Dr says the brain is too complex for medications to improve well-being, a claim easily contradicted by the abundance of research about psychotropic medications. I agree, however, that the effect of anti-depressants is quite limited in many cases.
7. The Dr talks about withdrawal symptoms - well, they clearly show that the medication had an effect.

@itamarberman 8. 8. The Dr suggests that hormonal factors caused Brooke Shield's depression, in part. This quite contradicts his claim that chemical imbalance does not exist.
To sum up, the Dr's comments are horribly non-scientific, misleading and at times quite ridiculous. Use scholar.google.com to check these things out, and I can ensure you that the majority of these studies has nothing to do with drug companies. I've taken part in many similar studies and funding never came from those.
Your brain is a very least a feedback loop, signals cause neurotransmitter release causes signals. now something like SSRI are pure evil, because they affect homoeostatic, basically 24/7 on MDMA or Extacy, also up and down regulation which can take many months or years for your brain to recover, just like opiate addiction etc.... Talk is free and cognitive therapies work wonderfully, though I would say that cheep, safe, one hit wonder Ketamine: a life saver on odd occasions. Food is a drug.
@oliverthered but is it possbile for your brain to recover from antidepressants using them from 13-21 i needed it for ocd celexa to be exact, and was not on a high dose just 60mg now down to 20mg
Although Breggin speaks the truth about psychiatry he overstates his faith in psychology. Psychology is another useless field that is as useful as a weekly horoscope or talking to a very patient friend. You can view my profile and videos for more details and advice. I have also provided an excellent bibliography of suggested books.
At first I thought the host was playing devil's advocate, but its clear she is in agreement with the medical community on this, which should not be a shock to anyone considering who her employer is. Also, I don't think the good Dr. is not emphasizing nutrition enough. The amount of garbage that can be found in these processed foods has to be wreaking havoc on our brains as well.
Its always woman who pop pills for ever little ache, pain, and cold ,it teaches are kids to be pill poppers !! Drugs are poisin to the body !! What is probably making you crazy is the toxic chemical laced food you eat !!! All these drugs you take causes you to be a left brain thinker !! Research what the left and right brain do !!WAKE UP !!!
One of the first things that the mad doctors/psychiatrists do is attack memory to put in "False Memeory and "Ultimate Identity Theft". "CRY_WOLF", Checkmate - What they state in defrauded records only exists in their sick, twisted, and perverted minds. They sound like they have voices in their heads. I can only file it under "Contract for Murder", "Murder for Hire", "Solicitation to Commit Murder", "Murder in the First", Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy", Serial Killing, High Extortion, etc.
It is really medication madness full of Racketeering and RICO acts. False Fronts for "Premeditated Murder", Trauma-based Mind Control,"Suicidal Programming,Soviet-style Psychiatric Terrorism, violence, terror, destroying minds, lives, and health. The corrupt feel they can take people hostage, build a fraudulent case, use false lables and then use the very drug which side effects equal the false label. "Money Laundering", lying about how they really make their dirty and blood tainted money.
If meds where the only alternative for people suffering from depression and that the unbalance where a scientifical truth. Then you wouldnt see so many people suffering or do maniac things because of this drugs.
Of course u believe what the doctors said, but remember that in the psychiatric field something that is a "scientifical truth" today can be banned tomorrow. Look at their history and u will see...
Well Breggin doesnt say that depression doesnt exist so pay attention to what he really says. He just say that it doesnt has a biological reason. In Homo Sapiens lifetime tis is a pretty new idea and it has no scientifical evidence behind it which also is stated by the APA. And of Course drugs make a difference, it can make u feel better but it doesnt cure your brain, it doesnt make it function any better, it actually works in the opposite way. Its a Fraud but a lot of money behind it.
It's hardly about discipline when it comes to psychotic kids having multiple personalities or whatever making them purposely get in trouble when they themselves don't want to- personal experience with other family and myself.
Everything else that doc. said there is true, though.
jimmyzen, I believe your side of the story certainly exists. However, that doesn't mean that a strong critic of the drugs big pharma pushes on us represents a lunatic fringe, nor does it mean that any drug that may improve someone's condition is necessarily the best solution in the long run. It should be noted that the pharma companies help fund the very studies that are supposed to determine if their drugs are safe, and doctors are continually bombarded by drug reps. It's not a healthy sytem.
having lived through and with this condition in my life for the past 20 plus years and having it nearly destroy me as thoroughly as it did the person suffering from it, it is sickening to see that my post gets thumbed down repeatedly. the only thing most people know about head doctors is what they see on TV and in films. but they also believe FOX is a news network. this quack's contention is ALL depression is a sham. i agree with what you say to a degree but the issue is more complex than this.
I also don't see why your post gets voted down, since what you say is sincere and based on your own experience. But there is a lot of anger toward the pharma companies and people don't believe they offer the best, or a healthy solution. Also, one can certainly believe that depression exists, but not agree with pharmas. I definitely don't get any news from fox, but agree with what this doctor says. It is complex, and i would just say one should first try a change of diet and lifestyle.
Like with so many things, just follow the money. The pharma industry puts millions into convincing us we need their products. European countries don't allow drug commercials on TV because they understand that people's healthcare isn't the same as choosing a cereal, nor should it be about maximizing profit for industry. Prozac has even been repackaged and sold as a cure for PMS. I can't remember the name of the drug but i hope any women who take such a medication will research this.
i have watched first hand chronic depression steal and destroy the most important person in the world to me. i have seen first hand a degree of normality return once the "right" medication was prescribed. those of you who don't believe there is such a thing as depression are wrong. i hope you never have to experience it or see it happen to someone you care about. maybe depression is over diagnosed, but it is REAL. this is FOX news so i'm not surprised they present the view of the lunatic fringe.
Dr Breggin is absolutely telling it like it is. I have observed drug non-beneficial "side-effects" on numerous occasions, and I have yet to have heard of a single person having his condition CURED. Way to go, Dr Breggin!
At last, someone willing to speak the truth. Hard to believe anyone could view this as controversial. Drugs in society to the extent that they have become the norm....now that's conttroversial!
Psychiatry has a control grip on society. They set themselves up as authorities about human thought, emotion, and behaviour and 9 times out of 10 they drug people---adults, youth, and children.
This guy hits the nail on the head. Depression isn't a chemical imbalance. The only reason Big Pharma characterizes depression as an imbalance is because all they can do is rearrange the biological state of the brain.
Ergo, whatever they can treat "must" be the problem.
Thank you, Dr. Breggin--these are my sentiments, exactly! You have a lot of guts to speak out like this--I admire you and hope that people listen to you and listen again...you have it so right.
