I confess to not being a 10CC fan or this spin-off. But, this, & the haunting "Not In Love" are quite addictive, for want of a better term. This use to give me the creeps, because it reminded me of the BBC 1981 version of Day Of The Triffids which came out at the same time, & as a child this video scared the crap out of me, as did Day Of The Triffids!
I was in the audience at this very recording. My brother Tom was a big Godley & Creme fan - remember Consequences and 'L' ?, albums which used the Gizmosoinc. At the end of the recording, Tom had disappeared apearing moments later in earnest conversation with Kevin Godley, who was patting him on the back and eventually shaking his hand. "Excuse me Mr. Godley, I am a BIG fan of yours.." or whatever he said. He told Tom this track would be appearing on their forthcoming album "Ismism"
Creme should have started a supergroup with Art Garfunkel and John Oates. They would all sing backup vocals and play keyboard (or bass guitar), and the videos would just consist of each one maneuvering to stand behind each other.
@Kraman777 - yes both were part of 10cc and 10cc Broke I think although there has been different line ups. Wikipedia has a good knowledge bank on them. I just think they are totally amazing and Im defo a fan and always will be - what great music I have been privelidged to listen to via them.
The thread between "Johnny Remember Me", "Wuthering Hights" and "Under Your Thumb"...call it "ghost rock", but the Americans don't come close to this gothic triptych
One of my all time favourites and I have only just put the connection together between 10cc and Godley and Creme lol. Amazing Artists indeed. The one thing I like is the way they have always told a story within their music. Not all Sex Sex Sex etc. Nice to be entertained in a good way for a change. Long Live Godley and Creme and 10cc influence *********************
Yes this a very dark and Brilliant fantastic song like Amy Winehouse's Back to Black song. Thats the thing about Brits compared to Americans Brits like to sing about the dark side of life. Like Amy Winehouse Back to Black song that song was a masterpiece so I think Amy Winehouse song is a better song. But this is brilliant from Godley and Creme. Like Amy Winehouse are proper musicians.
@rohanmarkjay You're comparing THIS to Amy "Over-rated" Whinehouse (deliberate mis-spelling there before anyone comments)? She wasn't fit to lick G&C's boots...
@tankeduponalcohol Well highly trained Jazz artists will disagree with you! They say Amy Winehouse was an amazing artist. One of the best Britain ever produced. However you are just another dumb listener, who thinks you know far more about music than knowledgeable Jazz Musicians. Nothing over rated about Amy Winehouse. Godley and Creme were good musicians but I think Amy Winehouse is comparable even better than them. Even Godley and Creme would agree with me if you bothered to ask them!
every old song on utoob has the same boring predicable and wrong comments about how music was better 20, 30 or 40 years ago. Chart music for the last 40+ years has been mass produced pap, with the odd well crafted gem, that either just happens to be a good pop song or makes it in from left field. The fact is as true today as it has ever been there is always good, less mainstream, music being produced it just needs a bit more effort to find that's all.
@Schudulaba Well aren`t I the stupid one, if only I`d thought of posting that comment as a jokey remark because I knew that was his name all along......how silly of me !............even more lol
These guys are inspirations to me (along with Peter Gabriel) when it comes to creativity in music video. You'll should check out my stop motion video if you got time.
Good stuff from brilliant musicians. Their music was always so different, complex and creative. Yes, they were part of 10cc.. Check out their song, "Five o'clock in the Morning" for a real treat. Also, they did the song "Neanderthal Man" as Hotlegs in the early 70's. Nothing like this on the radio today!
fereezeframe by godley and creme was one of the most brilliantly imaginative lbumms of the 80s it opened doors g&c never got public recognition they deserved takes me bavk to happy place
did they have a video of this song ? this song came out when i was 7 years old my mum has the vinyl somewhere. a very under rated song. The eighties were was a fantastic decade to grow up in.
@MsFanmail I seem to remember one for it, I think I recall a train (yawn) and steam or something and him sitting singing in one of those compartment type carriages that they always seemed to use in sitcoms in the 70's, it was a long time ago thou, I bet it's up here some place.
These Two(Godley & Creme) were in the classic rock band 10CC- right? They should have stayed! This is okay, but can't touch "I'm Not In Love", "Dreadlock Holiday" or "The Things We Do For Love".
Were they 10cc members? Don't you think that they have some Ultravox sound? It was the new wave time and all electronic arrangements were similar; It was such an innovative and creative music!

Bloody hell. I actually remember hearing/seeing this for the first time. Loved it from the first hearing. I must have only been either 10 or 11. Didn't understand what it was about until a couple of years later.
Great Video, great song, great people. BUT. Lets think of the message here. The woman kiled herself because of the way she was treated. It will never stop amazing me how heartless people can be. Can they ever realise what impact they can have on peoples lives, or even cause them to hurt themselves.
When I first heard this song my instant reaction was, "WHAT?". HOW can a pop song be THIS GOOD? Not only superb story telling, but also a wonderfully WRITTEN song with superb chord and key changes that reflect the mood of the song - not like some of the semi-improvised 3-chord garbage we hear(d) so often! This song is CRAFTED very skillfully and still gives me chills when I hear it, because of the lyrics and lovely melody! Clever, sparse instrumentation too.

I agree mate,1981 seems so long ago now,The one thing that has bugged me though watching the video is that Kevin and Lol must have fallen out that night,
thanks mate , 1981 comes rushing back and visits you for 3 minutes , a classic tune and memorable video, im not sure what happened between the two of them though.
The only thing that has bothered me since 1981 is that Kevin and Lol couldn,t have been talking that night,Otherwise why were they divided by a screen?
Does anyone have the other performance on TOTP where both Kevin and Lol are wearing leather jackets, when all of a sudden smoke appears from their sleeves?
I know Kevin Godley was in 10cc, but was he also the lead singer with a group called The Maisonettes who had a hit about the same time called "Heartache Avenue" ?
this has a real 1981 feel about it - it sounds like Depeche Mode or OMD or something. It has an 80s look too - the singer looks like the Yorkshire Ripper Peter Suttcliffe. I have not herd this song for 28 years, probo will not for another 28
Agreed, OMD or Ultravox could have done this rather than two members of 10cc. A bit of an odd one, about a woman committing suicide after meeting her ex partner.
I love this - a really quirky and original song. I agree with someone's comment earlier, that this has a particular 1981 sound to it. It wouldn't have sounded like this in 1980 or earlier and the style would have been different from 1982 onwards.
One thing that's always puzzled me - why did Godley and Creme, so feted for their work on videos for their own and other people's records, never make a proper video for this one? Especially when they had so much to work with.
These guys, along with Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman were formerly The Mindbenders in the 60s ..they recorded the original version of 'Groovy Kind of Love' in '66..then they morphed into 'Hotlegs' in 1970 and had a top 5 hit with 'Neanderthal Man'.. then they became 10CC .. the rest is history..
Love 5cc, and 10cc too. Don't think these 2 were in the Mindbenders tho', just the other 5cc and Gouldman only near the end of the band. Godley and Creme were studio musicians who joined only for a couple of years and were always going to leave to do other things.
BRILLIANT SONG! One of the best songs ever written. This is proper music. A million times better than all that r 'n b and rap crap that is about nowadays.
I've got a recording of a different TOTP performance of this song. And will be uploading it in the next day or two if you're interested.
an absolute amazing tune a true refelection of the sheer talant of godley and creme with its haaunting undertones and spine tingling effects it really is the best ,,, thanks,
First time I have seen the video, still play the single on Community Radio show in Hobart Tasmania, been doing the show now for 29 years, This was one of the first tracks I played every week on "Mostly Old but Something New" Top song
The UK was in a deep recession but 1981 saw the emergence of synthesizer generated songs become the mainstream from Human League, Duran Duran, Ultravox Godley & Creme, Laurie Anderson, Dave Stewart as well as further hits from Dollar, Jon & Vangelis and Foreigner. It was a trend that continued throughout the 80's.
Hmm - yeah..I was there throughout..I have lots of Vangelis on vinyl...never bought any 10cc or G&C (hence listening here..!)..Don't really think the current recession shall spawn such imagination, sadly...
Not only that.......... but by 1985, 36% of the USA Billboard Top 500.........were Wholly British bands/ singers. Thats about 170. Today? only about 3% of british acts appear week inweek out on the USA Billboard Top 500.
im 34 too,and this is the first time ive heard this for about 25 years, its mint reminds me of hot summers and riding around on my raliegh strika.cheers.
Finally I got to digitalisize all my old records. Got to this on, and I allmost forgot how much I liked it back then. Heard it the first time on Radio Luxemburg Top 40 in 1981, and bought the record. Still great!
I used to have this on a 33Record called "Snack Attack" and had recorded it to Tape. Then when Mp3 came out I converted the tape to Mp3 but the tape was in bad shape by then and I only got 2 songs off it "Under Your Thumb" and "Problem". I forgot the name of the artist and have been looking for it ever since.
I remember taping some songs onceand put this track on it. I listened to it travelling from London Euston to the Midlands on the train at weekends and really got into it in a big way. Very atmospheric...
I confess to not being a 10CC fan or this spin-off. But, this, & the haunting "Not In Love" are quite addictive, for want of a better term.

Gruntelfluk 2 years ago
Love 5cc, and 10cc too. Don't think these 2 were in the Mindbenders tho', just the other 5cc and Gouldman only near the end of the band. Godley and Creme were studio musicians who joined only for a couple of years and were always going to leave to do other things.

You're right, mate.. 10cc weren't a simple re-morphing of the Mindbenders..
I knew that, and should have stated so in my comment.

BRILLIANT SONG! One of the best songs ever written. This is proper music. A million times better than all that r 'n b and rap crap that is about nowadays.
I've got a recording of a different TOTP performance of this song. And will be uploading it in the next day or two if you're interested.

ShiveCanber 2 years ago
Hmm - yeah..I was there throughout..I have lots of Vangelis on vinyl...never bought any 10cc or G&C (hence listening here..!)..Don't really think the current recession shall spawn such imagination, sadly...

Hmm..you just reminded me of Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin....Offski to check on that right now...
Thanx Vaz

Not only that.......... but by 1985, 36% of the USA Billboard Top 500.........were Wholly British bands/ singers. Thats about 170. Today? only about 3% of british acts appear week inweek out on the USA Billboard Top 500.

Finally I got to digitalisize all my old records. Got to this on, and I allmost forgot how much I liked it back then. Heard it the first time on Radio Luxemburg Top 40 in 1981, and bought the record. Still great!

Fantastic song, Kevin Godley does look like Vangelis' gay younger brother though. lol!
