  • anyways ,, great sound and great playing :-)

  • You could probably get 33 watts ,, but then be biasing the amp colder ,, but cathode bias amps drops further towards class B when pushed and then the amp would sound nasty when puhsed. That is why you bias them hot at idle.. 90% discipation.

  • hhmmmm 33 watt out of a cathodyne PI, cathode biased 6l6 amp, not very likely..

Beam tetrodes like 6v6, 6l6 are not very efficient in cathode bias operation in relation to pentodes (el84, 7951S, el34). MAtchless pushes 35 watt out of a pair of EL34 with giganttic transformers. Carr rambler squezes 28 watt out of a pair of 6l6. Tungsten buckwheat claims a full 30 watt clean out of a pair of 6l6 with oversized mercury transformers. What plate voltage do you have ?? cathode bias resistor value ??

  • clean the amplifier exceeds a battery?

  • hey, nice video.. smooth playing too BTW.. that amp is a great one! I have an almost stock Stromberg Carlson 33.. (added three prong cord) but I don't have the cover as yours does though. I am curious if you find that it cuts some noise? I mounted my amp in a special built single 12 cab with a Ted Weber AlNiCo.

You can hear it in my video "All That's Left" .. and see it at the beginning of my quick studio tour video. Check it out!

  • Dude, you look just like Seth Rogan! Knocked-Up!

  • the amp is not nearly as clean as it sounds. my volumes were on 9 o' clock at the most. by 12 o' clock its fairly crunchy. its a really good sound though. especially for blues or with a pedal in front. if i put a 12y7 in the first tube and a 12at7 for the phase inverter it would really clean up a lot. i like the 12ax7's though. they just have a richer sound to me. i know they aren't as clean, but i would rather have a good sound than a clean sound.

  • well, I am a certified electronics technician. if you don't KNOW electronics then i would not mess with a tube amp. lately I've started rebuilding old circuits, but this was my first conversion so i needed something to get my feet wet. i bought a complete circuit board from ceriatone (5x3 - big deluxe)

i hooked it up and tested the bias. it was too high so I changed the cathode bias resistor to a larger value. i tied the two inputs together, so one volume is normal and the other is bright.

  • Crazy, I play through a Signet 33 too, although I think mine's pretty stock (it's been modded to accept 1/4" inputs, not sure what else was changed). Sounds like you have way more headroom on yours, I run mine at 10 or 11 o clock and it's pretty dirty.

How difficult was this conversion? Do you have more info about the changes you made to the 5e3 circuit?

Also, what's the difference between the two Volume knobs? The sound like they're operating on the same channel, is one a master?

  • I would have just modded the amp instead of ripping out all the guts like that. Those are excellent guitar amps with a few tweaks. Don't get me wrong...sounds great but there are lots of nice tweed deluxe kits out there to build if that's what you want without ripping up a vintage amp. Lots of work for what you get.

  • the transformers are from the stromberg, the speakers are some old rola alnicos.

  • Also what kind of speakers did you use here

  • @RanCiDka 12 inch rola alnico's from a hammond pr20 tone cabinet @ 1958

  • What kind of transformers did you use

  • @RanCiDka stock from the stromberg

  • That sounds great man! Love Ceriatone! What is the diff. between the 5e3, 5f3 or 5x3?

  • @dparel the 5e3 is the tweed deluxe circuit from @ 1959 ( I believe ) and the 5x3 is what ceriatone calls the circuit when its been modified to handle the higher voltages and currents necessary to use 6l6gc tubes. I think the 5f3 is a 5e3 with higher plate voltages but still using 6v6gt power tubes. I'm no expert though so take it with a grain of salt.
