the mosin-nagant is a nice rifle, its battle proven, and served the russian military a long time. However, compared to other bolt actions at the same time its a piece of crap. The mosin-nagant can't compare to the Lee-Enfield or the Kar98k. This is a fact, not a opinion.

@a2redneck It is not a fact, by any means. The Mosin Nagant was not then (nor is it now) a piece of crap. It is very durable and accurate. In the right hands, it can match a K98 without problem. Just because they're cheap and mass produced doesn't mean they are low quality. I have experience with both the K98 and Mosin Nagant and both of them are fantastic rifles.

Those were only carried by officers and NCO's or as a secondary weapon with a soldier carrying a PPsh-41 or PPs-43, the beginning of the war is when the Nagant M1895 revolver was the preferred sidearm issued, towards the end, the TT33 Tokarev pistol took over as the more dominant of the two that was issued to officers.

If anything, it was probably the other way around. The DS39 wasn't horribly successful and there were some concerns with reliability. In 1941 (when the Germans came knocking with their equally badass rifles), production of the DS39 was haulted in favour of the Maxim. Little more of a solid record of reliability and IMHO, all performance aspects aside, the Maxim looks scarrier. Then again, looking down the barrel of anything that fires bullets is scary as it typically results in acute death.
