  • Why do steam excursions sometimes need diesels? Reading and Northern in PA always stuck one or two SD50 diesels behind 425 on the longer excursions. Here there are two NS high hood diesels behind 4501. Is that for backup and protection?

  • Will be nice to see her up and running again!!! Just wonder if they will keep her black or if they will decide to give her the Southern Green paint again, I know originally she was black and was only painted green after she was brought back for Excursions and specials, so either way works, but I really liked the green paint on the 4501

  • This video was taken pretty much 25 yards in front of my old home. Would have been pretty cool to see my old house on YouTube, oh well.... Any idea on the year this video was taken? Good chance it was before I was born....(1990) Love seeing old trains like these still showing that they can still go.

  • There could very well be an excursion train just like this on Norfolk Southern in the near future! They are bringing back steam for real! #630 will be first, followed by #4501. Wick Moorman is a hero! David Goode can rot in you know where.

  • It's also a shame the caboose is a thing of the past. It's nice they got a Southern Steam Locomotive to lead.

  • She looks pretty and sounds pretty. I can't wait til 4501 comes back!!

  • nice train but why does it have three diesels with it none ancers me on that can you?

  • @ARSchimke There's only 2 diesels with the 4501 in this video. If you look at how long the train is behind her, that's one heck of a big train for the 4501 to be able to move at speed. The diesels were there to provide a little bit of extra power and dynamic braking, and as insurance in case something unexpected happened to 4501.

  • Nuthin' in the world like a good steam whistle...and I don't mean those puny single quill ones, either !

  • thats near the school O.o

  • I never get tired of seeing the old girl

  • gave me the chills i love that whistle ! i hope she is gonna make it to her 100th right now TVRM is focusing on 630 (another southern loco) I WANNA ride behind her so bad..... long live southern railway!

  • I LIVE CLOSE TO THERE

  • Sweet video! I like 4501s smokebox in black! What are those blasted desieles doing helping out though! HEP and insurence reasons are one thing (although I don't like it) but pulling the train, no way! I doubt 4501 could pull the train herself, so do it right, and run two trips! Oh, well, atleast the units they were using look similar to the SOU ones, still...

  • I heard the train was oringally schedualed to be behind 1218. Maybe 4501 needed the extra power.

  • @SLSF1522 that is a long passenger train thought but the secound diesil is not nessecery

  • Take that environmentalists!

  • Lulz i live there

  • She sounds almost just like tweetsie, but tweetsie is just about the same kind of engine except for the wheel arrangement, correct?

  • Tweetsie is a narrow gauge engine, 4501 is a standard gauge engine. big size difference.

  • Awesome on so many levels.

  • Thats a great sounding whistle on the 4501. Looks like this was shot in the late 70's based on the autos. My step-dad was an engineer on the N&W, and he got to run the 4501 on excursion in 1972, Pittsburgh to D.C.

  • It was great to see all those N&W cars Can't for 4501 to run again in the future.

  • put the disels on the back!

  • Coal Burner!! Nice Whistle!!!

  • I swear, if I win the lottery, I'm giving $300,000 of it to TVRM to get that thing up and running again. An absolutely gorgeous locomotive.

  • I second the motion! Isn't she the prettiest :D

  • Oh, she's incredible!!!

  • great!( those whistles sound like wolves!)

  • bad fire

  • the 4501 has a black smokebox front.

  • Damn she can pull a huge train can't she ....nice do you have and more of 2401 i love to see it

  • Not #2401, it's #4501

  • Man that is COOL. And with disels behind, man that's so out of place and surreal looking. I don't suppose they still do this kind of thing anywhere?
