  • MMA and UFC IS NOT martial arts bear that in mind

  • OR go and become a master in aikido or traditional choy lee fut and try use it against a Bare Knuckle Champion traveler who’s pint you just knocked over : )

  • So people should stop referring to people learning ‘UFC’ stuff and say learning ‘MMA stuff’ instead as it is really the whole net benefit of all this UFC stuff since 1992 – better ways to learn how to defend yourself if you need to i.e. MMA….

  • Fighting as seen in the UFC is not how you should fight in a fight on the street because it’s a sport and the goal is winning as opposed to stopping a guy attacking you with a bottle where the goal is surving but it is closer to anything a traditional martial arts class will teach you.

  • which is the only bad thing about MMA training... prats can learn how to really fight and hurt people. I respect Martialarts classes as they've always been...but there is just smarter options available that will teach you how to ACTUALLY FIGHT...and that's called MMA (of course theyre are good and bad MMA classes too)

  • the benefit to learning 99% of martial arts is fun and mental concentration and physical fitness which brings confidence and assertion which even further reduces your likelihood of being in a dangerous street fight etc.. unless you're a prat...

  • Luckily the chances of being in a street fight once you're an adult are very very small and most people I know have never been in any sort of dangerous fight on a street or while out in a club etc.. most people don't want to fight which is good and with a moderate amount of knowledge about how to act, where to not go, and how to remain calm when a fight seems to find you for no reason and you'll never need to learn military level MMA....

  • which at some point HAS to include getting hit in the face and being taken down violently or you're never going to know how to fight well when it comes down to it. In fact until you experience a fight be it an actual fight or a competitive b or c level MMA fight or full rule Muay Thai or kick boxing fight you'll never be prepared for the adrenaline dump experience of being attacked or being in a real gloveless street fight.

  • MMA was born from UFC and visa versa but you will learn to fight in self defence more successfully in Army style MMA training as seen at the end of the vid... against a LIVE oppnent learning MMA in progressive steps against progressive resistence...

  • MMA did evolve martial arts more than they had in a thousand years in the space of 15 years and is pretty much in or aournd the best we can do... the difference being the fight specific athletism and talent of the individual.

  • and take the guy down with a sharp double leg go to side control and ground and pound him with elbows if I could… and resort to an arm break Kimura or RNC if necessary and possible.

  • This is the best youtube short doc on Martial Arts I've ever seen, well done... it is absolutely correct.... 99% of martial arts classes will not make you good at fighting.... but nor does the UFC exhibit real fighting as explained in the vid... if I found myself having to fight for more than a few seconds on the street against a single opponent I would stop punching closed fist fairly quickly

  • BULLSHIT!!

  • You barely mentioned the most important basic key point of martial arts, which is the cultivation of a righteous spirit/mind through practice. All I hear in this video is competitions here, competitions there. You are confounding martial arts with fighting sports. They are similar to the superficial eye, but basically completely different serving different purposes and aiming to different goals. I would like to see a video on true martial arts history, recounted without being read from a text.

  • lol at this guy's comments below. Capoeria older than Asian MA and boxing being 1st martial art ever....right

  • Capoeria is an African Martial art that pre-dates any Asia art. It was bought to Brazil by the Portuguese during the slave trades during the 1400's.

  • @19thaman79 Axé!

  • Let's get shit straight, the 1st martial art was boxing which pre-dates ANY other fighting style, period. Boxing dates back to 5000 years ago. Pankration dates back to 3000 years. Asians didn't invent anything. Martial arts came from Europe and Africa and spread to the rest of the world.

  • There are aspects to all martial arts that won't work in a real situation. The debate of which one is better is strictly based on the practioner not the art itself.

  • how did the history of martial arts turn into a Gracie tribute ? They didn't invent martial arts or full contact challenges. I don't know if americans know this. Anyway, you left put ALOT of people.

Boooooooo to this pile of shit !

  • Karate, is my favorite style.

  • where can I download this documentary

  • when can I download this documentary

  • Egyptian dudes at :54 are high fiving :) That's how we should settle our differences today

  • I suggest you fix this video. The comment you said about "Karate not really working" was wrong. Lyoto Machida is todays UFC undefeated champion and he is a karate practitioner.

  • mma is the ring sport of martail arts.

    not a martail art.

  • All different names, forms and martial arts which i believe is for self defense.

  • This only talks about jiu jutsu/judo Make sure you relabel the video as the History of MMA

  • In Europe the fighting arts were not Martial ARTS because they used direct strength on strength. The Martial Arts come from yin and yang which is the harmony of force and the control of an opponent through asometric or indirect force never force on force. This when mastered allowed fighters to beat multiple attackers and larger adversaries

  • No. Martial arts, as in Mars (the roman God of war), and arts, so the Roman God of War's arts, or arts of war, martial is not an Asian word its European, Wrestling is a martial art along with tae-kwon do and karate, so saying that martial arts came from yin and yang, a concept made in asia, is wrong

Martial arts are first recorded as being in Africa, I think they were called Montu Arts and there are records of them way before any Asian martial art. This video only talks about MMA, however.

  • My friend I am not talking about the term Martial Arts which is European or Western.I am talking about Toaism or Zen which is the roots of Asian fighting systems. The term Martial Arts is a Western term but has no significance in Asia.Wu Shu is the Chinese term for Martial Arts.

  • Comment removed

  • this vid is cool i think. it states that history of martial arts are about war like behavior but its change to the way of life in modern times and how the martial is no longer the main objective. just as the book of five rings can be used in wall street, a versatile idea from an ancient era still has merit

  • this video realy should be renamed

  • It certainly does, since it isn't about martial arts at all.

  • the whole history of kung fu is not even portrayed.

but I dont think that the author believes in kung fu. He mainly focused on how MMA was created

  • only talks about jujutsu

  • i thought the first martial art was boxing in the middle east, maybe Egypt.

  • ancient greeks force and pankration pancrase.proud toobe greek

  • WTF!! Hold up. How in the hell you gonna just focus on one area of martial arts (Karate) and call it "The History of Martial Arts"?

  • So my friend if the martial arts does not come from the orient then where did karate, Kendo, kung-fu, judo, jujitsu, wushu, mauy thai, Filipino martial arts, kalaripayattu, Taichi, Aikido, ninjitsu, Taekwondo, etc etc come from???

  • Wat i ment was; most people think martial arts come from the orient because most martial arts do come from the orient. I think martial arts has very deep history than this; The Eastern side and the Western side.

But no matter what styles of fighting a punch is a punch, a kick is a kick... ."unless human beings have three arms and four legs, you'll have a different way of figting."

  • i know what u mean... it is believed that martial arts " pankration" may have been brought by the greeks via alexander the greats army to the east but its only a theory

  • I enjoyed the commentary. It indicates someone who is thinking clearly about fighting. It also indicates that the commentator is measured and articulate about what he has learned and can see. Good job. Good clips.

  • wtf? this is the history of the UFC! booooo

  • Side note... I always believed that you can trace where humans have originated from through tracking martial arts history. As stated, martial arts are found in all cultures and a lot of the techniques are the same or similar. I believe that a lot of scholars and historians have over looked martial arts. Since the beginning, humans have been in conflict with each other, it's "our" primal instinct and it can be traced.

  • nice! this is a great video, thanks for sharing.

  • whats the name of the movie featured at the end of this video??

  • I know the truth hurts but the oldest form of martial arts was disovered in Egypt.Theres over 100 diffrent styles of African martial arts thats still practiced today. There even coming out with a movie based on African Martial arts next year to show the world were martial arts really came from.I know its suprising but hey its the truth.

  • egypt is in africa

  • Martial Arts orginated in Africa jackasses next time do more history its even been historically proven.

  • wtf it has not been proven. pankration practicioners believe it came from the greeks, some people believe it came from india and most people claim it was from china. the truth is every culture developed there own fighting style only ignorant closed minded ppl like u cant understand that.

  • Thus the word karate was originally a way of expressing "Chinese hand," or "martial art from China."

  • The word karate was used for some time orally before it was first written.[citation needed] The original use of the word karate in print is attributed to Anko Itosu. He wrote it with the kanji (Chinese characters) 唐手:からて (Tang Dynasty hand) rather than the present usage of 空手:からて (empty hand). The Tang Dynasty of China ended in AD 907. The kanji representing it remained in use in Okinawa as a way to refer to China generally.[13]

  • hey guys, did any1 know about "kalaripayattu" which is known as the mother of all martial arts...which is practised in southern India even today.just google for kalaripayattu or search in youtube..then u get the idea behind who invented chinese martial arts..budist monks spreads this kalaripayttu to chinese main land and there it formed modern kung fu n karate

  • less of the karate shit talk go tell machida or gsp they cant fight

  • I made this video for our unit's Military Combative Class. I didn't write the script, I just found the videos (recorded some of them) and edited them together.

The script came from my combative instructor. They were just reading it to us at the beginning of the class so I decided to make it more interesting.

  • @lokiscreativedge you in Army?

  • testing

  • chinese martial arts pre date all other bulshit martial arts so chinese martial arts ARE THE FIRST

  • Chinese martial arts don't predate anything. There are accounts of ancient Greeks practicing unarmed combat in the Illiad and that is about 1220 BC, before any documented Chinese martial arts. Also, the whole Bodhidharma myth of starting Chinese martial arts has no historical evidence.

  • chinese martial arts date back to ancient manuals from the xia dynasty 3000 BC

  • Anyone that knows anything about Chinese History knows that The Xia Dynasty is mythical and unconfirmed by historical records. Please tell me the name of some of these manuals from 3000 B.C., I would like to see them. Almost everything we know from that period is from archeology. I really want to see a 5000 year old text. To my knowledge, the oldest martial arts manual is on an Egyptian tomb dated circa 2000 BC.

  • The shang dynasty was uncomfirmed until recently, until then western historians dismissed it as a "fake". a palace complex has also been found in the region where the xia dynasty was said to be and dating from that time period. since western historians were wrong before, and refuse to accept evidence they are wrong again

  • you still haven't addressed the topic at hand. I want to know the name of these manuals. Give me the name of the manuals and you win the argument. If you can't, admit you are wrong.

  • but im not saying chinese invented greek martial arts

  • Thank you for uploading. I would have liked to have seen more history on the striking arts but it is a great little history lesson anyway.

  • A good overall look at grappling/jujitsu, but hey, the other striking arts are just as valid, and by the way, they can and do work, strikers CAN fight! If you want to do better with your documentation, stay away from any biases.

  • Pankration not "Pankrathalon".

  • Thanks for all the comments and favorites. I made the video while I was taking grappling in the military.

  • Though I have to say I don't agree that MMA has really done that much for creating better individuals for society.

They may be strong and great fighters. Other than that

when i watch them talk in interviews there is a lot of sad

in-mate garbage coming out of their moths. It seems to

focus more on violence than on the personal development

    of the student.

Doesn't help the sport or society much, nor the kids that want to study...

    Only my five cents

    Thanks for the clip.

  • I wish the boys at Discovery channels would learn from this clip.

    Great work!

  • good work in the video man

  • Awsome video. Great man. Not to diss anyone,

but I like how the announcer mentions that Karate and TKD guys can't fight at 08:35.

  • OMG this is GREAT. GOOD work on this video !
