@fanofprotopic He's only unheard of to those who wish to make that statement. He's played with Jack Bruce, Bob Dylan, Albert Lee, Clapton, Mayall, his own bands, Noel Redding, SD Petit and lots more. He's created more great music the last 35 years than the band he left. No accident the last 18 months they've released nothing but new versions of material he was on including a legal version of the Brussels '73 concert. 'Pretty much unheard of' only shows he is a musician and not a rock star.

Just read an article last week where Keef stated the Stones are getting together in December to start jamming to blow the cob webbs off. He stated Mick Taylor and Bill Wyman are invited to this jam. One can only hope that both are invited on the assumed 2012 world tour.
As someone else said here, some of his solos almost bring a tear to the eye they are so good. In that time frame you take great rock songs and add in the Taylor soulfull, sometimes blistering riffs and wow - that is something that I have rarely heard. Probably never heard done that well. @yeahwhatever71 Yes! Mick has a melody to his playing that sets him apart from many guitarists who can shred faster or make more electronic sounds ( no offense to Eddy) . Mick plays music!
At the time Mick Taylor left the Stones, there couldn't have been a bigger Stones fan on earth than I. I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I had no idea how good a guitarist Mick was/is until very recently when I started looking him up online. Like Clapton and Hendrix, you don't really get a taste of the extent of his soloing ability on his studio work. But live? Sheesh! I used to think Keith was why I loved the Stones. But that great sound that made me a fan was when Mick was in the lineup.

@PENTADACTYLON As much as I respect Mick Taylor, i'd have to say the three places go to: Eddie Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. End of story.

Thanks for posting, along with Chris Rea and Mark Knopfler, Taylor is one of my favorites guitarists of all time, and certainly the least credited for what his talents. A pity.
In my opinion, Mick Taylor era Rolling Stones are some of the best albums. He brought so much to the table, however I don't think he was respected in the group. Just listen to some of the albums he played on, as well some of the songs after he left the band were influenced by Mick Taylor.
I have never in my life heard a better guitar solo. I have been playing guitar for 45 years and as far as I'm concerned, the best stuff the Stones ever dd was the Mick Taylor stuff. I'd pay big bucks to see him today. Clapton has nothin on this guy. He's an animal.
Are you kidding me? I've been playing guitar for 40+ years abd this might be the best solo I've ever heard. The Mick stuff is the best the Stones ever did !!!!
Gorgeous! These recordings are gems. Sway on Too Hot for Snakes is even more firey. Does anyone else get the irony of Mick's quitting the Stones to develop musically, only to find himself playing the same songs and sounds that established him as the Stones greatest lead guitarist? Fine with me -- we know he owns them -- free and clear of any circus compromise -- Stones a fun circus but not for everyone. Mick's passion is his gift, and playing his greatest pleasure & satisfaction, in the end.
I don't a guitar player that can soar like Mick Taylor. This is one of the great guitar solos in all of rock'n roll and as close to perfection as it can get.
I don't a guitar player that can soar like Mick Taylor. This is one of the great guitar solos in all of rock'n roll and as close to perfection as it can get.
Mick Taylor was by far the best guitarist the Stones ever had as far as playing live. I'd rate Woodie second. For creativity, I'd go with Brian Jones. While Keith came up with a good riff now and then, he has always sucked as a lead player. You think the stones were a good live band before Mick Taylor joined them? Listen to "Got Live If You Want It" (I don't) Horrible, just horrible.
MICK TAYLOR WAS THE BEST GUITARIST THE STONES EVER HAD! LISTEN TO THE LEADS ON GET YER YA YAS OUT! HE WAS THE ROCK GUITARIST OF THE STONES. I DONT HEAR KEEF OR RON RIPPING LEADS LIKE THIS!
GIVE IT A REST!! TAYLOR is, and has always been my fav. Stone. However he credits John Mayall for providing his chance touring overseas to exposing him to more music, he says Keith was the most satisfying guitarist to play with ever, and that his greatest respect for a songwriter is Bob Dylan. He was technically playing far above the others at any time. But he didn't want to be a showman (like the Stones' circus before his time). Keef & Jagger ripped him off, and that's a fact.
I was talking about Wood as a Stone, not as a Face or as a solo act. I don't like Wood's (supposed) contributions to the Stones (IORR the song, Hey Negrita f.i.). But hey, everyone is free to find what he wants. Anyway, Keith Richards doesn't have much respect for dear Ronnie either as we can read in his recent book. Taylor was the perfect fit in every aspect, especially musically. Thank god he never acted as a clown on stage. But Japp, why not commenting on this vid??
Well, we still disagree and that won't change. For what it's worth: very recently Richards literally said in an interview (video): "I miss Mick Taylor a lot". It's common knowledge that both Jagger and Richards had big problems with Taylor's quit for a long time. Just like many Stones music fans. Logical.
@kleermaker1000 Someone else siad it here on Youtube..Why not get in touch with-or start a petition or something -to get Mick Taylor to PLAY with the Rolling Stones ONE LAST TIME on ONE LAST TOUR, because let's face it, they are not getting any younger...and why not go out with a BANG? ----SPREAD THE WORD.
@jojoheartspaypay ---that's like telling General Chuck Yeagar to go back on active duty in the Air Force----yeah, he was the greatest but he's earned his respite to "rest on his laurels".....
@JappDubbel FYI - Mick Taylor played with John Mayall's BluesBreakers for a couple of years before joining the Stones. Why do you think the Stones picked him????
@JappDubbel wowowowowowowowwwwwwwww!!!!!!! You must like Wood.
I believe (pls respect my view) that Wood sucks a bit when compared to Taylor. Having said this, Woods is the perfect guitar player for the stones: hard worker, rythm more than lead ( and if playing lead, not looking for audience and effects).
An honest man, modest, that Keith can stand in "his" band.
@JappDubbel Mick Taylor added the few things that could be added to the Stones, a more lyrical guitar playing.
The Stones did not need someone else to do the writing, a great talented guitar player on top of Keith is the only thing that could be added , even JAgger says that.
Anyway it is true Mick Taylor did not fit a lot with the others
@JappDubbel Dera dumbass, while Mick was with The Rolling Stones they made Exile On Main St. and Sticky Fingers, two of the best rock albums ever made! I hereby dub thee unworthy to listen to that music since you do not respect the fantastic guitar playing of Mick Taylor, in short, piss off!
@JappDubbel You sir...are a complete idiot. You are either trolling hard (which in that case we all fell for it so shame on us) or so musically incompetent that you actually believe that Ron Woods is a good musician, writer, and comparable to Mick Taylor. '69 - '74 as compared to '76 - present. Lol. Get a grip.
"he's a good guitar player and he learned the hard way that's all he is'' yea thats really true. Mick Taylor can't write songs and I hope he not will tour with stones 2012. Ronnie Wood is ten times better and more talented.
I've always wondered why Wood fans hate Taylor so much and can't restrain themselves from being offensive. Well, actually it's easy to answer that question.
@JappDubbel Ronnie Wood has never wrote, played, or dreamt of a solo of this magnitude in his entire career. Taylor's work helped define the golden era of the rolling Stones. From Hyde park in '69 through Goats Head Soup. Come on man, get a clue. Nothing Wood did with the Faces or played with the Stones ever came close to matching Taylor's influence and contribution to the Stones. That isn't even debatable for christs sake. The song catalogues from both eras speak for themselves.
Mick and Keith wrote the songs while Taylor maybe came up with what he should play. The only song i know Taylor had involment in was It's Only Rock N Roll which is one of the weaker stones classics.
O boy, It's Only Rock & Roll the song is with Ronnie! Know your Stones facts. Taylor had nothing to do with it, he even doesn't play on it. He shaped Time Waits For No One. Mick and Keith had ideas, brought them in and then the MM added his essential part to most of the songs (especially on stage), which is a form of composing as well. I'm not going to repeat all the songs. But hey, check my channel and you'll get all the answers. Dance, little sister! ;-). Enjoy.
@kleermaker1000 It's true Ronnie played but Taylor did too. You sounds like Taylor wrote all the songs while he just was a guitarist not having the talent to be in the stones.
Japp, come on. Taylor did not play on IORR the song. Here's the facts for that song: Line-up ‘IORR’: MJ (voc)/KR (gtr, bvoc)/RW (gtr, bvoc)/Willie Weeks (bass)/ Kenney Jones (dr)/STU (p)
Take a look at Nico Zentgraf's website. Your Stones knowledge obviously lacks and you're putting words in my mouth. Don't do that. Enjoy the Stones music you love, think about Taylor as you wish. But at least have your facts straight.
Nico Zentgraf is THE authority as for who played on what etc. Check his website. You should know it, being a 'Stones fan' as you say. It's .nzentgraf.de. A whole new world will open itself for you. BTW: on the record sleeve of my vinyl has also been added to the credits of IORR the song: "(Inspiration by) Ron Wood", your great friend. It's originally HIS song and it's a very mediocre one too. Again: Taylor never played on it. If so it would be much better of course.
@kleermaker1000 After 1974 their sound growed to something else, They are a band who should sound raw and every note dosen't have by correct. The stones are band that always been playing with soul which taylot never had.
If you think Taylor has no soul then that explains everything you state here. You're missing something, my friend. But I can't help you discovering it. I would say: try it yourself. It's more than worthwhile.
@kleermaker1000 The most people are wrong in most cases but when it comes to stones many peplole who listen to them aren't stupid. It seems like you are one of those people who is stuck in the early seventies.
@kleermaker1000 Myshelf I think Exile is a bit overrated, but the things that made Sticky Fingers or Goats Head Soup great was not that Mick Taylot was in the band.
I disagree again. Without Taylor SF and GHS wouldn't exist at all the way they do. Not only because of his excellent guitar contributions but also because he did a great deal of the songwriting as well. That's common Stones knowledge: songs like Sway, Moonlight Mile, Can't You Hear Me Knocking, Winter, 100 Years Ago. All essential Stones songs without or with only very little Richards interference (except the first part of CYHMK). Keith was the riff master, Taylor the melody master.
Well I was sitting there in that stadium in the burning sun for hours and then Mick barked songs like Twenty Flight Rock and Going To A Go-Go... Stadiums in Europe have been made to watch football matches, not to listen to concerts. Besides the guitars were pretty bad. Remember I attended one of the great Rotterdam shows in 1973.
kleermarker1000 Ronnie wood is actually a real songwriter who wrote music for The Faces. Taylor is just one of those guitar players who can't write songs. And yes i've buyed some of the bootlegs from 1972-1973 and can't say they are very impressing. Mick has said he think the performances back in early 70's were very sloppy . The '78 tour, 81-82 tour, 1997-1998 tour, 2002-2003 tour is the tours when they played good.
Wood is good as a Face. Not special as a songwriter. Bad as a Stone. Taylor has written the best solo album of all Stones. Check YT for songs like A Minor, Spanish, Leather Jacket, Slow Blues, Giddy Up, S.W. 5. Enjoy! As for the bootlegs: you certainly must have missed Brussels Affair and the London gigs from 73 and the official Ladies & Gentlemen and so many others. Check my channel and enjoy. As for sloppy playing: Mick is funny and we know all very well that he love Taylor.
The stones greatest work was done in 68-69, when they blew the beatles away with rock n blues, before Mick Taylor joined the band. Who was the man behind those years, Keih Richard. Taylor was a nice ornament, but never produced the great songs keith did. Three constants in the stones, jagger, richards and charlie, and they are still great with ronnie and darryl.
What about Ya Ya's, Sticky Fingers, Exile and Goats Head Soup? What about songs like Sway, Moonlight Mile, Can't You Hear Me Knocking, Ventilator Blues, Winter, 100 Years Ago, Time Waits For No One? Not to forget the best tours ever: 1972 and 1973, the 1969 and 1970 tours being among the best four? Taylor only a nice ornament? When commenting Exile some British journalists said (kwowing the live bootlegs too) that the Stones fell off a huge cliff after Taylor left. Spot on.
@kleermaker1000 I'm not going to be baited into downing any stone, or stones era. I can find greatness in any of the stones eras, but I can't anything from Mick T after he quit the band. Rolling Stone magazine rated Goats 1 star in the 80s, Some girls is awesome. Voodoo lounge was voted best album in guitar player 1994. So, falling off a cliff is a good thing. Critics are idiots, fact is after he left the stones, he disapeared.
Well to you and JappDubbel I would say: give a listen to Mick Taylor's solo album Mick Taylor from 1979. It's the best solo album by any Stone and it's been written by Taylor himself. Everybody is of course free to appreciate or disapprove what he wants and there's no use in arguing about that, especially not if you're only quoting critics' opinions if they're favourable to you and if they're not are saying that "critics are idiots". I had to laugh when I read that. Very funny indeed.
@kleermaker1000 The point is that Stones had been better 1969-1973 if Ronnie been playing with them instead of Taylor. But Ronnie was busy writing classic song like Stay with me. Weel Taylors first album was good. But just listen to ''Now Look'', Gimme Some Neck, much more talent.
Okay Japp, we obviously have a different taste. I saw the Stones with Taylor in Oct. 1973 in Rotterdam and I saw them with Wood in May 1976 in The Hague, being 18 and 21 years old. In 1973 they were IMPRESSIVE and MAJESTIC, in 1976 they played at a much lower level, not impressive at all. The last time I saw them live was in June 1982, Feyenoord stadium Rotterdam. That was a waste of money. When I saw the L&G movie in Sept. 2010 in Rotterdam I was back in 1973 again. Fantastic!
Japp, I doubt if they'll do any shows next year, but I guess they'll do something in 2012 when the band has its 50th anniversary. I hope Bill and Mick T. will also be present. Would be great.
@kleermaker1000 Unfortunately I never saw the stones with mick taylor, but I have seen the stones 10 times with ron woods, and have never been disappointed. Highlight was columbus 2007, they rocked as good as anyone, anytime anywhere, and they were in their fifties! Comparing songs from eras, I see no real difference, great stuff from, Brians era and in the modern era, great rock. If anything, the critics began to turn on the Stones because of Taylors long solos, time waits for no one.
Man, then you've missed the real thing. In those days they were a very tight band in every aspect. For me the Stones is a band with 5 guys (and 2 horns and a piano at most), not a whole bunch of people. As for Taylor and long solos, that's a myth. And when he was playing long solos they were wonderful. Listen for instance to the You Can't Always Get What You Want live 1973 version on my channel with the longest Taylor solo on stage. It's marvellous. But I think we'll never agree.
@kleermaker1000 I like Mick Taylors guitar work, just pointing out that the stones were heavily criticized on Goats and It's only rock n roll. Also, the stones were huge, before he joined the band, and became bigger after he left, and no matter what anyone says, the two greatest stones songs, Sympathy for the Devil and Gimme Shelter, Mick Taylor was not involved with either. He contributes some good guitat, but the stones are more than just a good guitar player.
Totally agreed that "the Stones are more than just a good guitar player". I love Sympathy and Shelter too, especially live with Taylor. I loved their music before Taylor joined the band. But GHS is one of my very favourite albums. Just like Fingers, Aftermath and Buttons. Remember that the critics tore Exile apart when it was released? While it's one of their top albums. The Stones became bigger when Taylor left, but musically they declined. Bigger is often not better you know.
@kleermaker1000 First, the stones have two classics with woods, some girls and tatoo you, but I think coincidentally that Jimmy Millers production had more to do with the stones string of 5 concecutive classics, than mick taylor ever had. Starting with j.j.flash, beggars through Exile, the best run I ever heard in rock, but the trend started when Miller took over production, not when Mick T. joined.
Two classics with Wood you say, one of them containing two songs with Taylor: Tops and Waiting On A Friend. Not a bad album with some nice leftovers (though Start Me Up is horrible) but not a classic imo. When SG came out I loved it for about a couple of months but it didn't stand the test of time, except Beast Of Burden. Too trendy. But we got Plundered My Soul this year: a great Stones song, fantastic groove, fine lead guitar. A real classic Stones song.
@kleermaker1000 The weight of the Stones past really messes up peoples perceptions. Star me up, classic, but I like Slave, Worried about you (perkins on guitar), Black and Blue, Voodoo Lounge, to stones always rock, but the Stones did slow down after tatoo you. I believe if M.T, would have stayed, they would be right where they are.
No I don't think so. I've uploaded some songs that are proof. But you have to listen to them very carefully and also have some knowledge of the facts.
@kleermarker1000 Stones did most of their greatest songs 1964-1968 with Brain Jones, who was more of a guitar player like Ronnie. Taylor didn't give Keith as much space while playing guitar as ronnie. And keith who is the real talent in stones are better without taylor.
mick taylor didn't fit with the stones. Stones were more of a blues band and taylor did just want to play solos all the time. Ronnie can play with Keith, Taylor played solos while Keith played rythm.
I think you don't know the Stones with Taylor. I even think you don't know the Stones at all when you say: "Taylor didn't give Keith as much space while playing guitar as ronnie. " Ask Jagger and Charlie. Both admit that the band was musically at its peak when Taylor was a member. Ronnie is a very good Face but a clown as a Stone. A puppet on strings, Keith pulling them. A fan-boy who became a member at the detriment of both himself and the band.
pff you're just ridiculous.. for other people the Stones after Brian Jones are dead for you after the sleep man Taylor stones are dead.. i said just bull shit ! yes his a good good guitar player but the stones never died ! crazy..!
my favorite period of the rolling stones was the mick taylor years....ronnie's great but mick is such the perfectionist on guitar.....i hope when they do this last tour they bring him (and bill wyman) back.....
In my humble opinion, all the best stones music is with mick taylor. He really makes Sticky Fingers a special album. I could get crucified for saying this, but he was a step forward from Brian Jones who was spending a lot of time with electric sitars and the like. Ron Wood of course great. Just hear the Faces.

Logical.

Mick Taylor didn't fit with stones in any kind of aspect........
you are right my friend: he was from a totally different level of class and talent as a player than Richards.

I've always wondered why Wood fans hate Taylor so much and can't restrain themselves from being offensive. Well, actually it's easy to answer that question.
kleermaker1000 1 year ago
@JappDubbel Ronnie Wood has never wrote, played, or dreamt of a solo of this magnitude in his entire career. Taylor's work helped define the golden era of the rolling Stones. From Hyde park in '69 through Goats Head Soup. Come on man, get a clue. Nothing Wood did with the Faces or played with the Stones ever came close to matching Taylor's influence and contribution to the Stones. That isn't even debatable for christs sake. The song catalogues from both eras speak for themselves.

@cgraber you are damn so right, man.
Few guitar players in the history can afford a solo like this!

''Taylor Was The Melody Master''?
Mick and Keith wrote the songs while Taylor maybe came up with what he should play. The only song i know Taylor had involment in was It's Only Rock N Roll which is one of the weaker stones classics.
JappDubbel 1 year ago
@JappDubbel
Dance, little sister! ;-). Enjoy.
kleermaker1000 1 year ago
@kleermaker1000 It's true Ronnie played but Taylor did too. You sounds like Taylor wrote all the songs while he just was a guitarist not having the talent to be in the stones.
JappDubbel 1 year ago
@JappDubbel
But at least have your facts straight.
kleermaker1000 1 year ago
@kleermaker1000 Nico Zentgraf??????? Who's That??????
Watch any other website you will find that Taylor played on the track.
JappDubbel 1 year ago
@JappDubbel

JappDubbel 1 year ago
@JappDubbel
Keith was the riff master, Taylor the melody master.
kleermaker1000 1 year ago
Just can't understand how you can say a wonderful concert in 1982 when tickets were cheap was a waste of money!
JappDubbel 1 year ago
@JappDubbel
Well I was sitting there in that stadium in the burning sun for hours and then Mick barked songs like Twenty Flight Rock and Going To A Go-Go... Stadiums in Europe have been made to watch football matches, not to listen to concerts. Besides the guitars were pretty bad. Remember I attended one of the great Rotterdam shows in 1973.
kleermaker1000 1 year ago
kleermarker1000 Ronnie wood is actually a real songwriter who wrote music for The Faces.
JappDubbel 1 year ago
@JappDubbel

Spot on.
kleermaker1000 1 year ago
@kleermaker1000 I'm not going to be baited into downing any stone, or stones era. I can find greatness in any of the stones eras, but I can't anything from Mick T after he quit the band. Rolling Stone magazine rated Goats 1 star in the 80s, Some girls is awesome. Voodoo lounge was voted best album in guitar player 1994. So, falling off a cliff is a good thing. Critics are idiots, fact is after he left the stones, he disapeared.
harp1925 1 year ago
@harp1925
Very funny indeed.
kleermaker1000 1 year ago
@kleermaker1000 The point is that Stones had been better 1969-1973 if Ronnie been playing with them instead of Taylor. But Ronnie was busy writing classic song like Stay with me. Weel Taylors first album was good. But just listen to ''Now Look'', Gimme Some Neck, much more talent.
JappDubbel 1 year ago
@JappDubbel
Fantastic!

kleermaker1000 1 year ago
@kleermaker1000 Unfortunately I never saw the stones with mick taylor, but I have seen the stones 10 times with ron woods, and have never been disappointed. Highlight was columbus 2007, they rocked as good as anyone, anytime anywhere, and they were in their fifties! Comparing songs from eras, I see no real difference, great stuff from, Brians era and in the modern era, great rock. If anything, the critics began to turn on the Stones because of Taylors long solos, time waits for no one.
harp1925 1 year ago
@harp1925
But I think we'll never agree.
kleermaker1000 1 year ago
@kleermaker1000 I like Mick Taylors guitar work, just pointing out that the stones were heavily criticized on Goats and It's only rock n roll. Also, the stones were huge, before he joined the band, and became bigger after he left, and no matter what anyone says, the two greatest stones songs, Sympathy for the Devil and Gimme Shelter, Mick Taylor was not involved with either. He contributes some good guitat, but the stones are more than just a good guitar player.
harp1925 1 year ago 2
@harp1925

Starting with j.j.flash, beggars through Exile, the best run I ever heard in rock, but the trend started when Miller took over production, not when Mick T. joined.
harp1925 1 year ago
@harp1925
A real classic Stones song.
kleermaker1000 1 year ago
@kleermaker1000 The weight of the Stones past really messes up peoples perceptions. Star me up, classic, but I like Slave, Worried about you (perkins on guitar), Black and Blue, Voodoo Lounge, to stones always rock, but the Stones did slow down after tatoo you. I believe if M.T, would have stayed, they would be right where they are.
harp1925 1 year ago

No I don't think so. I've uploaded some songs that are proof. But you have to listen to them very carefully and also have some knowledge of the facts.
kleermaker1000 1 year ago
@kleermarker1000 Stones did most of their greatest songs 1964-1968 with Brain Jones, who was more of a guitar player like Ronnie. Taylor didn't give Keith as much space while playing guitar as ronnie. And keith who is the real talent in stones are better without taylor.
JappDubbel 1 year ago
mick taylor didn't fit with the stones. Stones were more of a blues band and taylor did just want to play solos all the time. Ronnie can play with Keith, Taylor played solos while Keith played rythm.
JappDubbel 1 year ago
@JappDubbel
