  • It was quite catchy for Sherman to decide at the end to say something that was actually 'bad' advice - in this case Columbus sailing off the edge of the Earth. Ancient peoples believed the Earth was actually flat and thus such a scenario could occur; not sure how Columbus crossing the Atlantic ocean could tie into that happening - I see you show the two worlds overlapping at 4:18 - perhaps that was Sherman's idea?

  • Great song :D

  • Beautiful video -- thanks for doing it.

  • @FuzzyElf - Thank you Fuzzy!

  • Brilliant song i used to listen to Alllan Sherman with my Dad and this was my favourite song.

  • GREAT job on this video

  • There was more to this song, wasn't there? I can remember the entire verses about Sigmund Freud and Benjamin Franklin but I can't seem to find any other copies of this great great song....

  • @CollegeGamerDotNet Benjamin Franklin was a charming old man, he was always flying his kite. One night I said "Benji, why ain't you out with your kite"? He said "Because it's raining tonight!" I said "Benji, sweety, you go right back out there, and to your kite string, tie a key. This may shock you Benji my boy, but that's electricity!"

I may still have this album, but it is NOT for sale. Sorry. I've also got the "Peter and the Commissar" album, in all it's glory.

  • If Ookie McGoo invented the wheel, who invented the tires?

"Firestones! Meet the Firestones! & the Early Stone Wheel family.

Oooky-went to mobile, the 1st car trip in prehistory!"

  • He Had To, go to his nice uncle's cave

"too far" so he carved some wheels in pain

Firestones! Meet the Firestones! & the Early Stone Wheel family!

  • Mr Allen Sherman-Peabody.

  • On a list of Sherman's songs on Wiki, I can't find this song on it. This was the best song I ever heard him do, Was this another parody, or a Sherman song-melody & all?

  • Best Allen Sherman song I heard yet.

  • Great song and great video, though there is a little mistake. When you show a pic of queen Isabel you're showing a pic of the queen Isabel who reigned about 4 centuries later than the one the song makes reference to. The correct one is Isabel of Castilla (the Catholic Queen), who reigned from 1474 to 1504.

  • @pepusy - Yes, you're right. But I couldn't find a picture of Isabel of Castilla. And when I wrote to her to ask for an autographed picture, she never wrote back. So I had to make the substitution.

  • @cputb1 XD I'm sure the other wouldn't have anwered either

  • His life didn`t end well.

    RIP Allan

  • Waterman didn't invent the fountain pen-- the genuis Francis Bacon did in the 1600s so he could write in his coach

At this point I should also clear up another American misnomer-- Joseph Swann invented the lightbulb, not Fleming.

    Damned good song though :D

  • @voyenbici Wait! Who invented Fleming, then?

  • @kevpmcg Mr. and Mrs. Fleming founded Fleming I should think. What are you driving at?

  • Genius! Sheer genius! Allan Sherman was one the funniest men who ever lived!

  • Nice editing job, too. The two verses you cut out were probably the worst and you didn't need to have the "One more time!" reprise part in there.

  • @shirtandtiewilldo - I guess it's true. Great minds do think a like! Hahaha. Yeah anything over 5 minutes on youtube often get's ignored. So I felt for all the younger folks out there, who had never even heard os A.S., a trimmed down version would be best, Thanks again.

  • This is my all time favorite Allan Sherman song. Much better than any of his parody songs. But more than that...kudos on a fantastic video that absolutely captures the mood of the song and has a throwback '50s feel to it. Well done!

  • @shirtandtiewilldo -Thank you. Very kind.

  • I know his "Hello Muddah,Hello Faddah" is the more famous, but this one has always been my personal favorite!

  • The way Philip Jose Farmer told it, it was Roger Bacon who fell off the edge of the earth.

  • You forgot Isaac Newton, The Wright Bros., Benjamin Franklin, and Sigmund Freud! By the way. the world ending in 2012 is bad advice!

  • how about "grow mrs. Goldfarb" or "turn back the clock". Allen Sherman was a genius!!!!!

  • Columbus came 500 years too late, so much for siesta! -Viva US VIKINGS!!! :-P

  • @BigAndTall666 - Tusind tak for the comment!

  • what?

  • @pgtwilight98 - Exactly.

  • Wonderful!!!! Thanks for putting this together!

  • I swear I'm not making this up. This is my cat's favorite song, she will meow till I play it, and start purring immediately.

  • @paperdain - Hahaha! A sophisticated cat!

  • @cputb1 not too sophisticated though, she also eats Pringles(But only from the can) lol.

  • @paperdain That hepcat knows a good beat.

  • @MrIronose {Groans at pun} She loves ALL Alan Sherman, but for some reason, this is her favorite. She actually turns on my stereo, and gets disgusted if Allan Sherman doesn't play.

  • Comment removed

  • Why they aint playin this stuff in the radio instead of this shit that makes me puke

  • Love it! The sone is frequently played on qantas airlines in the radio entertainment (smile high club)

  • Do you Have the Full version>?

  • @classof3000addict - Ye. I have the CD. The song is also available for download at iTunes and Amazon.

  • @cputb1 Thats cool umm is it possible if u can send it or upload it?

  • @cputb1 Thats cool umm is it possible if u can send it or upload it? because i was looking for it 4ever

  • at 1:33 he says 'Im so worldly rise...not "wise"...they left the take as it is...why...because they didn't want to waste studio time?

  • Allen Sherman was a top notch entertainner. His humor is nothing short of fantastic.

    Two thumbs up for cputb1!!

  • @LISTUNUP - Thanks!

  • @LISTUNUP hey

  • You ought to do a follow up with the whole 8.5 minutes. Some of us will appreciate it even more!!!

  • Brilliant job!

  • Cheery tune and sweet old sentiments.

  • you know Allan Sherman looks a lot like a very funny youtuber, ArtieTSMITW

  • Did anyone else notice that the picture for the world was from WoW?

  • gayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

  • @venom168360 - You ought'a know, hahaha.

  • Nicely done.

  • @MrIronose - Thank you! (sorry for the belated reply)

  • but their was an encore why did you not do that

  • I edited some of the verses out, to keep the track down to 5 minutes long. On Youtube, it's hard enough to get people to keep watching one's productions for even 30 seconds, let alone for a whole 08:26.

So I wanted to keep my little homage to Allan to 5 minutes or less.

  • @cputb1 I'd happily listen to the full song if you'd put it up! And that was good advice! :-D

  • @cputb1 You did an excellent job. Maybe someday you can make a video using the full version of this song. I'd watch it, and I'm sure others would too. At any rate I love what you did with this.

    STAY AWESOME! :)

  • Fantastic video! This is one of my all-time favorites by Allan. I always credit my learning history to this song, ha ha ha! I enjoyed this immensely.

  • Thank you hadesgirl! Yeah, if my HS history teacher would have played this in class, my GPA probably would been a lot better, hahaha!

  • Excellent! Thanks for the great work you've put into this hilarious video, you've given me a much needed laugh tonight! I too haven't heard this song for decades, thanks!

  • WoW! Thanks again. Very kind of you to leave such a nice comment. You made my day!

(BTW, liked your clever edits at 1:08 and 1:58 on your Paige video)

  • @cputb1 Thank you so much! I had that song in mind when I was putting together clips for Paige's video, so I had my camera ready to film when she started playing with those toys, LOL ! ~ Jeanne :-)

  • I choke everytime I see Bush, That is gold!!!

  • Hahaha. Thanks!

  • Your work is great, Allen is really funny. Have you ever thought about something for crazy downtown?

  • WoW Thanks. I've got a couple other A.S. tributes up, but maybe it is time to do another one. I always love listening Allan's tracks.

  • I haven't heard this since I was a kid 50 years ago. You've done a great job on it -- congratulations and thanks.

  • WoW, thanks for the kind words RooForce!

  • Bravo...I remember that as a kid, but to see the words and visuals really drive home the song!

  • Thank you Bobphx!

  • Can someone post "When I was a lad?"

That's a classic but tougher to find.

  • cutis1000, try searching under HMS Pinafore and you'll find a few. One of the better ones is QiXfDHvD3ww.

  • Thanks! But I'm searching for Allan Sherman's rendition of When I was a Lad and I haven't found it on YouTube.

  • Wonderful!!! Saved this one as a Favorite. I really loved Allan Sherman back in the day--I have forgotten how truly funny he was.

  • Do you know that your version of this song is missing like three verses of advicing.

  • Yes I do brett7300.

I edited some of the verses out, to keep the track down to 5 minutes long. Because on Youtube it's hard enough to get people to keep watching one's productions for even 30 seconds, let alone for a whole 08:26.

  • I grew up watching Allan Sherman live on TV; He had a number of his own specials and appeared on Ed Sullivan and such. I have to say that your cleaver visuals add a new dimension to these songs that make them even more enjoyable.

If I can put in a request for a future project, I think his song "The Rebel" would look great with your added visuals.

BTW, check out "My Son the Box" from Rhino that contains CDs of all his released albums, plus some extra ones containing live performances.

  • Thanks for the My Son The Box tip, and the kind comment. I appreciate it!

  • I would love a comic in the style of Allan Sherman. Someone who could rewrite pop songs into humorous parodies of pop culture!

  • If you like Allan Sherman, you should also check out Stan Freberg and Tom Lehrer.

  • lol at oohka magook

  • "...a very poorly educated soul"
