  • At the end of the universe, lies the beginning of vengance.

  • I remember seeing this movie with my dad back in 1982 and watching people openly weep in the theatre over the death of Mr. Spock.

  • that piccolo player is crazyyy

  • Thank you Linkara

  • I always thought, as a kid who watched EVERY episode and now an old man who has seen every movie (and enjoyed them all), this was the best score next to Jerry Goldsmiths' original.

  • I believe star trek's best theme is the motion picture theme then this.. But then I believe James Horner did a good job with the soundtrack on this and the search for Spock.. But cannot come close to Jerry Goldsmith

  • This and Star Trek IV are tied for the best IMHO.

    First Contact was close behind.

  • @fatkinson2011 I think Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country should be included

  • the movie was so good that I bought it twice on VHS

  • I think The Wrath of Khan was briliant and heroic! It wasn't over flash on effects and concentrated on character, tension and pace. Also the music was excellent, dramatic and on point!!

  • The only time I've ever cried in a movie. Of all the souls... his was the most... Human.

  • The only time I've ever cried in a movie.

  • Remember....

  • It seems to merge into the ST3 opening and closing credits as well.

    Very interesting arrangement!

  • More than any other ST theme this score has a naval sensibility to it that's a really great fit for the franchise

    It sounds like sailing music

  • Kirk: KHHHHHHAAAAANNNNNN!

    Khan: WHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAATTTT!

  • This is not the original recording.

    Orchestra failures all the way.

  • @ElisNefaria true, while this is not the "original recording" you have to admit it is still good

  • The best piece in the entire Star Trek franchise, in my opinion.

  • Brings a tear to me eye.

  • I piss my self when I listen to this...In a good way.

  • This sounds indeed a little different from my released score CD. Some nuances in the arrangement.

  • This is not the music from the film.

  • @StreathamG It sure is. It's the opening theme.

  • @peterp21 No, what I meant was, it isn' the original score from the film. The original theme yes - but not the original score.

  • Wonderful theme song. Stuck me since I was 6 years old when this was a new movie.

  • I was there in 1982 in the Varsity Theatre, Chapel Hill, NC. Every seat was filled and even the aisles. Best Star Trek movie and soundtrack ever made in my opinion. And yes, there was not a dry eye in sight when Spock died.

  • Only bad thing about the Star Trek TOS-era films is those god-awful Santa Claus uniforms. Musically, brilliant.

  • @LeighAurora

    Santa claus uniforms, Haha!

  • This is the best film score of all time. I need to go back in time and watch this in the cinema. MY WORD.

  • I think star trek II and III are the best. Star Trek III's theme is very similar to this one and was done by the same composer.

  • Man, they don't make them like they use to. This score, in fact even the movie was so unrelenting bombastic and in your face, but in a good way. Like many have said, by far the best of the TOS films, and in this posters opinion, the best of the entire film series. Having said that I was pleasantly surprised, and very much enjoyed the new 'Hollywoodized' Star Trek XI. I'm glad they are heading in a new direction and not treading over the same old ground, cmon you can't recreate this!

  • I think that each film's music perfectly represented the movie's mood, this one is mysterious and gloomy like khan

  • Thank you for posting this!

  • This is a beautiful work, somewhat comensurate with the original Star trek theme, but I still hear the musical score making excuses for Mr. Spock and his merry band of earthling terrorists, or something. It just isn't deeper into it's origina. It is moving away from it, going the wrong way, in my opinion.

  • best star trek theme of all time...shame it was only used in only one movie

  • I would have liked for this music to have been used for the last few seasons of TNG.

  • You can tell by the difference between the original series and the films what Roddenberrys dream always was, just imagine if others had shared his vision at the time of the original series.

  • This is film that got me into Star Trek. Will always be my favorite TOS cast movie

  • @calinthesea: This is indeed considered by most to be the best of the Original Cast Trek Films! What's ironic is that it was also the least expensive to make! Sometimes less is more, eh? v/r, RSM

  • This and Krull are Horner's best.

  • This is actually a combo of the opening AND closing credits.

  • Wrath of Kahn is better than Empire Strikes Back! ohh do I dare say that?!

  • @themoviedudesteam man I love SW so much, but damn I don't think I can compare them. I just love wrath of khan so much and the genesis triology as a whole. I don't think I can say ones better than the other. But in terms of main themes/opening music...yeah this is better.

  • @locutus12

I agree. Star Trek XI was an insult to the the original ST cast and to the memory of Gene Roddenberry. It was so bad I was embarrassed to watch it. It was worse than Japanese monster flicks of the 1950s.

  • And Yes, best movie, best sound track, and most epic kirk movie ever

  • Epic! Best score of the entire Star Trek franchise.

  • Pinticle of Star Trek, movie & music!

  • Startrek XI - the death of our trek history. God I miss being a kid and seeing this for the first time. To Mr James Doohan, Mr Gene Roddenberry, Mrs Majel Barrett, Mr Deforrest Kelly, rest in peace my friends, and dream of distant stars.

  • @locutus12 No, the true Star Trek shall not die. As one of the younger generation (I'm 19) of huge Trek fans, I assure you that I will not let those memories fade.

  • Pretty decent version of the music.

  • This song is fucking epic!

  • james horner is a genius...i could listen to THIS song for hours on end and not get tired of it...actually i'm jut getting turned on to it...just last nite lol

  • james horner is a genius...i could listen to THIS song for hours on end and not get tired of it

  • Best Trek picture period. It was exciting, complex, and pushed the story forward, something that was later undone by the sequels, which is a shame. Every classic legend needs a sense of mortality.

  • This music is very emotional and dramatic <3. The movie was good, way better than the first one. The music imo totally makes this movie something special.

  • Pure Genius

  • 11 people got killed by Khan!

  • Excelsior wasn't in ST II.

  • @aperson22222 it might be an Excelsior-class enterprise, but yeah...wtf ll

  • @doodly2BetterThanEvr

Actually no, This is the original U.S.S. Excelsior, NOT the U.S.S. Enterprise-B. The Enterpriose-B is an Excelsior Class Refit, had an extended forward engineering section around the deflector dish, and the necelles are higher up and more stylized then the original class. The U.S.S. Excelsior class was smaller and less stylized. The vessel Pictured appears to be NCC-2000, under the command of Capt. Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

  • Bonito!

  • Excellent music, terrible presentation - just have the WoK artwork.

  • without a doubt the best star trek movie made

  • Oh Star Trek, you are literary the only reason why I dont make concrete plans to whipe out the human species. Because you give me hope of a good, bright future. Even though in TNG they say that there are wars along the way...

  • The music, the movie, both would give you excitment! Remember, "Space is disseased in darkness, and silence." Bones.

  • Truly awesome! without doubt the best.

  • If we could ever get past our bullshit politics in this world StarTrek could be a reality. Just need to get kids interested in science and technology to make it possible.

  • @chevroletgt bullshit is little said.

  • This was one of the best I too admit!

  • He tasks me...He tasks me & I shall have him !

  • "I spit my last breath at the"

  • @AaryckAZ at thee

  • I have this song in my mp3. As a kid this gave me chills.

  • @TRENZ2 Me too, I was blown away when I first heard this music as kid. James Horner's theme is my favorite of all the Star Trek movie themes. I still get goose bumps even now when I hear it.

  • yeaaa....Totally wicked movie. I hope they do keep making more Star Trek movies, JJ Abrams new movie was solid, no problem there, But Wrath of Khan just cant be beat.

  • @djmyers71 well, ideally with a continuity reboot, the botany bay is still floating out there someplace waiting for the enterprise to find it. that could be an interesting sequel. not sure if it's my first choice but it wouldn't be bad.

  • wow those are poor quality pictures..

  • Yes by far the greatest Star Trek film made, and by far the best music for any thing to do with Star Trek! I remember seeing it as a kid and everyone in the theater (and it was PACKED) was bawling by the end. It truly was a masterpiece not only for Star Trek but just for film making in general!

  • terrific music, and great movie

  • Did you cry when Spock died kids? I was in the theater. You could've heard a pin drop.

  • @johnnyLikeVideo Oh! If only I could have been there in that theatrer!

  • @johnnyLikeVideo

Damn straight; 'Made me bawl like a red headed orphan child who's jest been whupped with a knotted plowline. Hell, it still does. One of my own personal Most Powerful Cinematic Moments Ever.

"You have been, and always will be... my friend" Oh, jesus, there I go again...

  • @johnnyLikeVideo I was too young to have really grasped it, but after my own personal growth of respect to the series, I saw it for the first time a few months ago, and found myself holding them back. Despite knowing what was next, it was still sad to see him sent off.

  • Wrath of Khan was the best one out of all the Star Trek movies, with Voyage Home in second.

  • @MrMalikBlishtar It is the best. Period. Don't you agree? Why not just say it. It's THE best. Greatest Star Trek movie ever.

  • Horner certainly has a unique flare and style, for me though I can remember seing the undiscovered country twice in the cinema and still remember the haunting dark score by Cliff Eidelman. Nothing beats that for me.

  • I have to say that I love both. They both fit the styles of their films very well I think.

The Next Generation movie music sounds like elevator music trash by comparison, and that isn't because of the composer, but because Rick Berman believes that music in TV and film should be very subdued and low-key so as to not overshadow the actors. He's full of crap, but that's what we got.

  • Agree. Best Star Trek film ever. Number 6 comes in at second. Both were directed by Nicholas Meyer. I'm surprised he was not asked to direct more. He loves to mix in Shakespeare and other classical lines.

  • Yeah Nimoy and Shatner wanted to direct too. "Spock" did quite well but "Kirk" was a disaster

  • Actually, he was asked to direct Star Trek: Nemesis, but had to turn it down because they refused to do a rewrite.

  • @thewongaddress, I think Meyer was asked to direct Nemesis but refused, something about artistic independence

  • @Golkarian it's because the script fucking sucked

  • @Golkarian Nemesis could have been one of the best lol =)

  • @thewongaddress I agree with you - but never realised the credit was Nicholas Meyer's. Did he do non-Trek stuff too, and if so, is it on the same level?

  • @thewongaddress He doesn't know anyhing about sci fi. Time travel, cyborgs, katra, and god like aliens are beyond his abilities. Star trek 2 and 6 could have easily taken place in the 1600's on boats.

  • Okay, please explain to me how you did this. This is the intro to Star Trek II and the end title together. The intro is shorter than this piece. And the end title doesn't begin with the Alexandar Courage fanfare. So where did you get this from?

  • Probably from a soundtrack recording.

  • You're right. I found it on I-tunes.

  • @calyman from the movie

  • Damn... I can't even imagine how it must have been... sitting in the cinema and listening to this music when the film was first released... - spine crawling at least.

  • @yohwl I was nine when this came out, and was absolutely floored. Dad showed me the TV episode that introduced Khan, so between the music and the awesome story, it swept me totally away.

  • @yohwl I remember seeing this movie for the first time in the theater. From the first note of that theme song, I knew that this one was going to be great. I've heard how the director wanted to give the sense of a high seas adventure, and I think he did one helluva job!

  • @yohwl Yeah, I saw Star Trek II for the first time in a cinema ... fell in love with Horner's music right away!

  • @yohwl

Yeah no kidding. I think I was about 4 when this movie was released. I dont remember being at the theatre if I was taken to see it.

  • @yohwl aye it was

  • @yohwl I was there at a premiere in Portland, OR...the crowd erupted in a cheer as soon as we heard the opening bars of the original series theme...it was spine crawling indeed.

  • The intro music is by far the best ,

its got an inherent epic feel too it.

  • Totally agree.

When I saw this at the cinema and the lights dimmed and James Horner's music started you just knew you were in for a movie treat.

  • I feel sorry for my generation of teenagers, we'll never experience what you have. Its rare to have a film containing music epic as this.

  • @ExNausea

Valid point but don't forget there are still some good film music composers. Joel Goldsmith's work for the Stargate SG1 series and spin-off movies are really good.

  • this is definitely one of the best Star Trek movies ever!

  • "...one of the best Star Trek movies ever"?

I'm sorry, but this IS the best Star Trek movie, ever! Every other Star Trek film can be debated on quality and their respective rankings within the series...including the JJ Abrams reboot. But Wrath of Khan is still the king.

  • I would say ST 6 is second, since it was produced by the same guy. (The last Kirk/Spock move with Praxis exploding.)

  • people say either Startrek 2 or 4 is the best. i throw 6 into that mix myself

  • @txmoney Wrath of Khan is the best movie with the original crew - First Contact is the best movie with the TNG crew. :)

  • LONG LIVE STAR TREK.

  • This music remember me to the best Star Trek movie ever!!!

  • Not only the best score for a Star Trek movie, but the best Star Trek movie to date. Better than that piece of crap movie they put out earlier this year.

  • best trek music from all the movies and series IMO.

  • hope someone edits together pieces of new star trek to this song

  • this music is truly the heart and soul of star trek

  • Turn out the lights, lie down and listen! Just a wonderful concert in its own right. This orchestra is just sublime.

  • I've long felt that this was the best of all the Trek scores. It's a pity Horner never returned to the franchise.

  • He did, he did the score for Search for Spock.

  • I don't think the franchise ever hit the same heights in terms of music after this. This is one of the best scored sci-fi films ever.

  • I love the spooky sounds in the first 30 seconds, all quiet and mysterious, then suddenly springing into the opening notes of the Alexander Courage theme, then soaring off into this bombastic opening theme. Still one of my favorite themes after all these years. Speaks of majesty, mystery, and adventure. And putting icky little worms in peoples' ears. *shudder*

  • Best Star Trek Movie and best music.....Ever

  • @mailwin72

Best Star Trek music is the punk rock music on the bus.

  • I wish they would make another show with the TNG cast, and the intro would have this music instead of the Motion Picture Theme

  • i wish they make one with old cast thats still alive

  • Star Trek XII: So very tired

  • lol, the Simpsons

  • 1:57, ahh, yes......

  • Does anyone know where I can purchase the complete soundtrack for this film? I used to own a copy but it was on cassette and I played it to death! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • Amazon or Itunes if you're luky

  • This is hands down the best opening theme. I'd love for someone to make a montage with clips from the new Star Trek with this opening piece.

  • jj's new star trek?

  • Star Trek 6 had the best theme. But Star Trek II had the best *theme + story*. Ever.

  • This is hands down my favorite Star Trek theme. It has that nice swashbuckling tone about it that makes it so catchy.

  • Right...The picture at 00:37. Thats the origional cast but with different heads on them lol Why did you put that picture in there?

  • This is my favourite by far, even though I love Jerry Goldsmith's TMP music. Horner's music captures space and is so sweeping, elegant and Romantic. Beautiful music.

  • As a Goldsmith fan, I think Horner's music is gorgeous, but is weaker melodically than Goldsmith's and also is too inspired by turn of the 20th Century's classical music. The point about film's set in the future is that the music should sound unfamiliar: no one knows what music in the 23rd Century will be like. Goldsmith understood that and his score for the first movie works better as a result. I believe Horner was asked by the director for a old-time naval sound in his score.

  • But, it achieves what it set out to do; it created an epic tone for the film.

  • janw20000, I'm not saying Horner's music isn't an impressive achievement (especially for a young composer). It's just that personally I prefer Goldsmith's approach - leaner and more futuristic.

  • Great score by James Horner, but don't forget about Jerry Goldsmith. He rocked it too in the first film and also First Contact.

  • By far the most powerful, beautiful, and inspiring piece of Star Trek music ever composed.

  • GEEZ, ask him to marry you already!

  • Wish I could have Takei (sp?) as a lover, and yes, I'm female. :)

  • ever try to shoot pool with a rope? :o)

  • To Wimmzey: Just saw your response.. I'm a trooper.. but I'm somewhat of a realist, and do give up eventually. ;)

  • This is my favourite theme by far and the best film. This is one of the best films ever made not just star trek best period!

Final frontier wasn't that bad had a lot of good banter between kirk, bones and spock that was so important and fun about the TV series!

  • I personally like the first movie/ TNG theme

  • Did James Horner do this tune too? If so, I love the man :)

  • that was a great movie

  • Great!! darker, different Horner was uniuqe!! I love Goldsmiths stuff too though

  • very good song...

  • James Horner's ST:II and ST:III themes are by far the most thrilling of all the Star Trek movie themes.

  • you right

  • You know I like the look ans the feel of the Movie era ships a lot better then the sleek plastic ships post Next Generation. I don't know if it is the fact that I was young or just the skill behind the Next Generation and earlier shows, but Star Trek once filled me with wonder and the newer ones don't. I think that these shows were the very heart of Star Trek they make you believe anything was possible and that there was hope for the future if we are willing to work for it.

  • i think Star Trek Insurrection is kinda uderestimated.... for me Insurrection is typical Star Trek movie along with a nice music...

  • insurrection was the worst thing since "the final frontier".

  • You got that one straight, both sucked badly

it is wierd to hear this version it's ST II but not lol good anyhow

  • I agree with the final frontier being bad quality. Wonder who's idea it was to let Shatner direct that one? lol! plus it had that annoying sound going with the music. But I'd have to disagree with Insurrection being all bad. The battle scene in it was kinda corny and fake, but, had a decent story line that expressed the dreams and falls of humanity and such.

  • I think it was in Shatner's contract. He and Nimoy worked a deal that said they were both to be treated as equal. They received equal billing, equal pay, etc. Nimoy was about to direct the 3rd and 4th film so Shatner was about to direct the 5th. Unfortunately, the production was so rushed, the budget so small that the film was poor. I don't recall the directing was "bad" per se. It was more of starting with bad ingredients and then wondering why the final product tastes like crap.

  • Powerful and exciting soundtrack

  • Best Star Trek film - Tied with First Contact; but this is the Best Soundtrack hands down. Thanks, I was craving this track.

  • Sulu, get me another beer.

    Make it so.

  • all the star trek movies were epic, # 2, 6, Generations and contact were my fav's

cant wait for the new one.

    *Giggles*
