I always thought, as a kid who watched EVERY episode and now an old man who has seen every movie (and enjoyed them all), this was the best score next to Jerry Goldsmiths' original.
I believe star trek's best theme is the motion picture theme then this.. But then I believe James Horner did a good job with the soundtrack on this and the search for Spock.. But cannot come close to Jerry Goldsmith
I think The Wrath of Khan was briliant and heroic! It wasn't over flash on effects and concentrated on character, tension and pace. Also the music was excellent, dramatic and on point!!
I was there in 1982 in the Varsity Theatre, Chapel Hill, NC. Every seat was filled and even the aisles. Best Star Trek movie and soundtrack ever made in my opinion. And yes, there was not a dry eye in sight when Spock died.
Man, they don't make them like they use to. This score, in fact even the movie was so unrelenting bombastic and in your face, but in a good way. Like many have said, by far the best of the TOS films, and in this posters opinion, the best of the entire film series. Having said that I was pleasantly surprised, and very much enjoyed the new 'Hollywoodized' Star Trek XI. I'm glad they are heading in a new direction and not treading over the same old ground, cmon you can't recreate this!
This is a beautiful work, somewhat comensurate with the original Star trek theme, but I still hear the musical score making excuses for Mr. Spock and his merry band of earthling terrorists, or something. It just isn't deeper into it's origin. It is moving away from it, going the wrong way, in my opinion.

You can tell by the difference between the original series and the films what Roddenberrys dream always was, just imagine if others had shared his vision at the time of the original series.
@calinthesea: This is indeed considered by most to be the best of the Original Cast Trek Films! What's ironic is that it was also the least expensive to make! Sometimes less is more, eh? v/r, RSM
@themoviedudesteam man I love SW so much, but damn I don't think I can compare them. I just love wrath of khan so much and the genesis triology as a whole. I don't think I can say ones better than the other. But in terms of main themes/opening music...yeah this is better.

james horner is a genius...i could listen to THIS song for hours on end and not get tired of it...actually i'm jut getting turned on to it...just last nite lol
Best Trek picture period. It was exciting, complex, and pushed the story forward, something that was later undone by the sequels, which is a shame. Every classic legend needs a sense of mortality.
This music is very emotional and dramatic <3. The movie was good, way better than the first one. The music imo totally makes this movie something special.
Actually no, This is the original U.S.S. Excelsior, NOT the U.S.S. Enterprise-B. The Enterpriose-B is an Excelsior Class Refit, had an extended forward engineering section around the deflector dish, and the necelles are higher up and more stylized then the original class. The U.S.S. Excelsior class was smaller and less stylized. The vessel Pictured appears to be NCC-2000, under the command of Capt. Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.
Oh Star Trek, you are literary the only reason why I dont make concrete plans to whipe out the human species. Because you give me hope of a good, bright future. Even though in TNG they say that there are wars along the way...
If we could ever get past our bullshit politics in this world StarTrek could be a reality. Just need to get kids interested in science and technology to make it possible.
@TRENZ2 Me too, I was blown away when I first heard this music as kid. James Horner's theme is my favorite of all the Star Trek movie themes. I still get goose bumps even now when I hear it.
yeaaa....Totally wicked movie. I hope they do keep making more Star Trek movies, JJ Abrams new movie was solid, no problem there, But Wrath of Khan just cant be beat.
@djmyers71 well, ideally with a continuity reboot, the botany bay is still floating out there someplace waiting for the enterprise to find it. that could be an interesting sequel. not sure if it's my first choice but it wouldn't be bad.
Yes by far the greatest Star Trek film made, and by far the best music for any thing to do with Star Trek! I remember seeing it as a kid and everyone in the theater (and it was PACKED) was bawling by the end. It truly was a masterpiece not only for Star Trek but just for film making in general!
Damn straight; 'Made me bawl like a red headed orphan child who's jest been whupped with a knotted plowline. Hell, it still does. One of my own personal Most Powerful Cinematic Moments Ever.
"You have been, and always will be... my friend" Oh, jesus, there I go again...
@johnnyLikeVideo I was too young to have really grasped it, but after my own personal growth of respect to the series, I saw it for the first time a few months ago, and found myself holding them back. Despite knowing what was next, it was still sad to see him sent off.
Horner certainly has a unique flare and style, for me though I can remember seing the undiscovered country twice in the cinema and still remember the haunting dark score by Cliff Eidelman. Nothing beats that for me.
I have to say that I love both. They both fit the styles of their films very well I think.
The Next Generation movie music sounds like elevator music trash by comparison, and that isn't because of the composer, but because Rick Berman believes that music in TV and film should be very subdued and low-key so as to not overshadow the actors. He's full of crap, but that's what we got.
Agree. Best Star Trek film ever. Number 6 comes in at second. Both were directed by Nicholas Meyer. I'm surprised he was not asked to direct more. He loves to mix in Shakespeare and other classical lines.
@thewongaddress I agree with you - but never realised the credit was Nicholas Meyer's. Did he do non-Trek stuff too, and if so, is it on the same level?
@thewongaddress He doesn't know anyhing about sci fi. Time travel, cyborgs, katra, and god like aliens are beyond his abilities. Star trek 2 and 6 could have easily taken place in the 1600's on boats.
Okay, please explain to me how you did this. This is the intro to Star Trek II and the end title together. The intro is shorter than this piece. And the end title doesn't begin with the Alexandar Courage fanfare. So where did you get this from?
Damn... I can't even imagine how it must have been... sitting in the cinema and listening to this music when the film was first released... - spine crawling at least.
@yohwl I was nine when this came out, and was absolutely floored. Dad showed me the TV episode that introduced Khan, so between the music and the awesome story, it swept me totally away.
@yohwl I was nine when this came out, and was absolutely floored. Dad showed me the TV episode that introduced Khan, so between the music and the awesome story, it swept me totally away.
@yohwl I remember seeing this movie for the first time in the theater. From the first note of that theme song, I knew that this one was going to be great. I've heard how the director wanted to give the sense of a high seas adventure, and I think he did one helluva job!
@yohwl I was there at a premiere in Portland, OR...the crowd erupted in a cheer as soon as we heard the opening bars of the original series theme...it was spine crawling indeed.
Valid point but don't forget there are still some good film music composers. Joel Goldsmith's work for the Stargate SG1 series and spin-off movies are really good.
I'm sorry, but this IS the best Star Trek movie, ever! Every other Star Trek film can be debated on quality and their respective rankings within the series...including the JJ Abrams reboot. But Wrath of Khan is still the king.
Not only the best score for a Star Trek movie, but the best Star Trek movie to date. Better than that piece of crap movie they put out earlier this year.
I love the spooky sounds in the first 30 seconds, all quiet and mysterious, then suddenly springing into the opening notes of the Alexander Courage theme, then soaring off into this bombastic opening theme. Still one of my favorite themes after all these years. Speaks of majesty, mystery, and adventure. And putting icky little worms in peoples' ears. *shudder*
Does anyone know where I can purchase the complete soundtrack for this film? I used to own a copy but it was on cassette and I played it to death! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
This is my favourite by far, even though I love Jerry Goldsmith's TMP music. Horner's music captures space and is so sweeping, elegant and Romantic. Beautiful music.
As a Goldsmith fan, I think Horner's music is gorgeous, but is weaker melodically than Goldsmith's and also is too inspired by turn of the 20th Century's classical music. The point about film's set in the future is that the music should sound unfamiliar: no one knows what music in the 23rd Century will be like. Goldsmith understood that and his score for the first movie works better as a result. I believe Horner was asked by the director for a old-time naval sound in his score.
janw20000, I'm not saying Horner's music isn't an impressive achievement (especially for a young composer). It's just that personally I prefer Goldsmith's approach - leaner and more futuristic.
You know I like the look ans the feel of the Movie era ships a lot better then the sleek plastic ships post Next Generation. I don't know if it is the fact that I was young or just the skill behind the Next Generation and earlier shows, but Star Trek once filled me with wonder and the newer ones don't. I think that these shows were the very heart of Star Trek they make you believe anything was possible and that there was hope for the future if we are willing to work for it.
I agree with the final frontier being bad quality. Wonder who's idea it was to let Shatner direct that one? lol! plus it had that annoying sound going with the music. But I'd have to disagree with Insurrection being all bad. The battle scene in it was kinda corny and fake, but, had a decent story line that expressed the dreams and falls of humanity and such.
I think it was in Shatner's contract. He and Nimoy worked a deal that said they were both to be treated as equal. They received equal billing, equal pay, etc. Nimoy was about to direct the 3rd and 4th film so Shatner was about to direct the 5th. Unfortunately, the production was so rushed, the budget so small that the film was poor. I don't recall the directing was "bad" per se. It was more of starting with bad ingredients and then wondering why the final product tastes like crap.
At the end of the universe, lies the beginning of vengance.

I've long felt that this was the best of all the Trek scores. It's a pity Horner never returned to the franchise.
dfrioli 2 years ago 9
He did, he did the score for Search for Spock.
brianblackberry 2 years ago 8
I don't think the franchise ever hit the same heights in terms of music after this. This is one of the best scored sci-fi films ever.
djfinex 2 years ago 6
I love the spooky sounds in the first 30 seconds, all quiet and mysterious, then suddenly springing into the opening notes of the Alexander Courage theme, then soaring off into this bombastic opening theme. Still one of my favorite themes after all these years. Speaks of majesty, mystery, and adventure. And putting icky little worms in peoples' ears. *shudder*

Best Star Trek music is the punk rock music on the bus.

I wish they would make another show with the TNG cast, and the intro would have this music instead of the Motion Picture Theme

Does anyone know where I can purchase the complete soundtrack for this film? I used to own a copy but it was on cassette and I played it to death! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

This is hands down the best opening theme. I'd love for someone to make a montage with clips from the new Star Trek with this opening piece.

Star Trek 6 had the best theme. But Star Trek II had the best *theme + story*. Ever.
YoozYerBrayns 2 years ago 4
This is hands down my favorite Star Trek theme. It has that nice swashbuckling tone about it that makes it so catchy.
darthbane1982 2 years ago 6
Right...The picture at 00:37. Thats the origional cast but with different heads on them lol Why did you put that picture in there?

This is my favourite by far, even though I love Jerry Goldsmith's TMP music. Horner's music captures space and is so sweeping, elegant and Romantic. Beautiful music.
TibetKanagawa 2 years ago 3
As a Goldsmith fan, I think Horner's music is gorgeous, but is weaker melodically than Goldsmith's and also is too inspired by turn of the 20th Century's classical music. The point about film's set in the future is that the music should sound unfamiliar: no one knows what music in the 23rd Century will be like. Goldsmith understood that and his score for the first movie works better as a result. I believe Horner was asked by the director for a old-time naval sound in his score.
dafmurray 2 years ago 2
But, it achieves what it set out to do; it created an epic tone for the film.
jawnaw20000 2 years ago 6
janw20000, I'm not saying Horner's music isn't an impressive achievement (especially for a young composer). It's just that personally I prefer Goldsmith's approach - leaner and more futuristic.
dafmurray 2 years ago 4
Great score by James Horner, but don't forget about Jerry Goldsmith. He rocked it too in the first film and also First Contact.

By far the most powerful, beautiful, and inspiring piece of Star Trek music ever composed.

This is my favourite theme by far and the best film. This is one of the best films ever made not just star trek best period!
Final frontier wasn't that bad had a lot of good banter between kirk, bones and spock that was so important and fun about the TV series!
skatepunkuk41 2 years ago 4
I personally like the first movie/ TNG theme
parrot998 3 years ago 3

James Horner's ST:II and ST:III themes are by far the most thrilling of all the Star Trek movie themes.

You know I like the look ans the feel of the Movie era ships a lot better then the sleek plastic ships post Next Generation. I don't know if it is the fact that I was young or just the skill behind the Next Generation and earlier shows, but Star Trek once filled me with wonder and the newer ones don't. I think that these shows were the very heart of Star Trek they make you believe anything was possible and that there was hope for the future if we are willing to work for it.

i think Star Trek Insurrection is kinda uderestimated.... for me Insurrection is typical Star Trek movie along with a nice music...
Pribinace 3 years ago 4
insurrection was the worst thing since "the final frontier".
zice39 3 years ago
You got that one straight, both sucked badly
it is wierd to hear this version it's ST II but not lol good anyhow
Zcontinuum 3 years ago
I agree with the final frontier being bad quality. Wonder who's idea it was to let Shatner direct that one? lol! plus it had that annoying sound going with the music. But I'd have to disagree with Insurrection being all bad. The battle scene in it was kinda corny and fake, but, had a decent story line that expressed the dreams and falls of humanity and such.
Bethlc81 3 years ago 2
I think it was in Shatner's contract. He and Nimoy worked a deal that said they were both to be treated as equal. They received equal billing, equal pay, etc. Nimoy was about to direct the 3rd and 4th film so Shatner was about to direct the 5th. Unfortunately, the production was so rushed, the budget so small that the film was poor. I don't recall the directing was "bad" per se. It was more of starting with bad ingredients and then wondering why the final product tastes like crap.
