Start off by having the plate conference from the correct side of the plate. This guy is probably well liked in his neighborhood, but no one should use his videos for instruction.
"Don't argue balls and strikes, the next call might go against you." Very unprofessional. The umpire should always call each play as he sees it without thought of previous plays. Never do a give and take for either team.
it also helps to be a big fat guy who can tower over and intimidate players and managers like they do in the major league. Lots of screaming and eggagerated body laguage also helps.
Remember, being an umpire is about showmanship, and letting everyone know who's boss.
the only reason home goes over ground rules is they know the field. and were the trouble spots are. there a cretin things home dugout need to tell umpire before game.
1) Don't explain the field. Make the home coach explain how to play balls off dugout walls and what not. 2) Ask if everybody is legally equipped. 3) All coaches in dead ball territory, buckets on the concrete. 4) Have a question about a rule, head coach pop out ask for tiime and we'll talk. 4) innings, time limit, 5) Specific quesitons before we start? 6) Encourage sportsmanship 7) anounce game time. 8) Play. 303
I also let the coaches know at the plate meeting, that THEY will be the only 2 to come out & discuss anything. This shows them respect, and gives them a shared responsibility. No yelling across the field at my partner or myself. Players & assistant coaches are to be seen & not heard.
Keep the "F" bombs down, & ZERO tolerance for throwing bats, helmets, etc.,....Throw a bat ....bye-bye. There are no warnings...."This is the warning"
Are all of your players safely and properly equiped?
Safety's my first priority, sportsmanship my second, this is little league, keep it civil. Stay in your dugouts, call time before you come out to argue. No arguing balls or strikes, no chirping from the dugout.
Real game or not, he should consider that other umpires who may not know better are going to watch this video and remember that this guy who is acting as teacher didn't have his shirt buttoned so they're going to assume it's OK, when it's not. His tone with the coaches is way too aggressive, but he did do a good job going over the field conditions..I'll give him that one. Did not mention a time limit, which set of rules they're playing by, if all players are legally and properly equipped...etc
tru i am an umpire and i'm nervous about my first game behind the plate on sunday. also, what did he mean that you could play a little world series game on that field? i thought those games were played in williamsport?
also, remember this word: TIMING! do not call your strikes instantly like he does! this is a key to good umpiring. in regard to his "little league world series" comment, he's just over glorifying his field and association. everyone thinks their stuff is the best after all, right? feel free to ask any other questions before you have your game on sunday!
WTF ?? I wouldn't put this guy on a tee-ball field. By "going over the ground rules" he obviously means telling the coaches multiple times not to argue balls and strikes.... you can ask me, but don't argue. If I were coaching a team in one of his games, I'd ask every pitch.
This guy is ridiculous. He needs to go to umpire school. Just a simple 1 week will set him straight. Even a 5 week school would be good for this guy. I should post my own videos so this guy can learn how to umpire. I give him credit though, he probably took on the job that no one else in his area wants. Someones gotta do it.

I can see many groups showing this is how not to look professional.
