  • Love it!!

  • Wow! Wow! Wow! Dynamite version.

I saw this song performed by the Pied Pumpkin in New Denver, British Columbia in the summer of 1975. Big old hall filled with bush hippies, loggers, cowboys, tramps, bikers, and lost souls. It was soooo great. Wow.

  • @Aphidboy I glad that I saw your post! I saw a solo acoustic cover this @Luke's tavern in Missoula, Montana in 1979, the night before the last Ardor Day Kegger; your description of the folk at the New Denver is a match for that night. In the john someone scrawled "Luke's Bar, where hippies, bikers, Indians..." Sounds like we were on different trails of the same path of that time

  • @badbadkingjohn I was a Luke's regular in '75 to around '78. Could be we stood together at the bar together looking at Leigh Neigh's black and white portraits on the walls at some point back then. Good luck to you.

  • @Aphidboy what a connection! Credit JB. He writes, he sings, and he holds my heart! What I owe him! Take care of yourself!

  • Interesting... she's got a husky voice, but he takes the low parts and she takes the high parts... makes for great harmonies...

  • What a graet song!

  • Awesome post! Great song of course, heard it when it came out many decades ago, but Kathy's voice blends really well with his and it improves the song...

  • BEST VERSION OF THIS CLASSIC......kathy never fails to impress...

  • am so moved

  • 5 stars - JB and Kathy together = fantastic. Thank you.

  • if you know a redhaired woman in NormanOK please email me

  • @tim22ism ..I'm a red-haired woman weeping to these lyrics

  • He just wanted to sing with her this time. Maybe it just makes them happy to be singing this song again. Sounds good to me.

  • I just posted a message and also wanted to add that Kathy Mattea has absolutely beautiful vocals on a song called, "Southern Soldier Boy."

Really stunning singing and that is why when I listen to Kathy sing folk/country it is more suited for her voice then "Rock Me on the Water." .

  • @folkmusicgirl I think Kathy does just fine with this--her voice is deeper than JB's, but that's ok--this mix is great

  • I prefer LInda Ronstadt's version. I do enjoy Kathy's voice a lot but think her voice is more suited to folk/acoustic style songs then this song. Some artists do try to branch out & sing many styles, not always with success. Some artists have a voice that can sing in every genre like Linda Ronstadt. I do have several Kathy Mattea albums but prefer her vocal style in more of a folky genre. Kathy does a beautiful version of "Nothing But A Child"

which I think her vocals are more suited for.

  • I love both JB and KM, but this song is best sung by Linda Ronstandt. Hands down.

  • this is a fantastic song. however, mattea just does not have the type of voice to carry it. she is a pretty good singer. but she just doesnt have the real emotional voice to make this song what it is really meant to be. listen to the original jackson brwwne recording and you will see what i mean.........

  • One of the greatest songs ever written.

  • Like much of Browne's recorded work this is a mediocre effort.

  • Hahaha...what an insane comment.

  • You're kidding right? JB is one of the most brilliant singer songwriters in the history of rock and roll. Late for the Sky is one of the greatest albums recorded. By anyone. Ever.

  • jstraw4; I must agree with 100%; who else would be in the running, Neil Young I guess; JB can and does make this old man cry; songs that go right to heart, speak of our times, and rock, usually all at once

  • Great harmonies...

  • Two of my favorite singer songwriters from the 70s. Great duo.

  • Try it with your head out of your ass. Or click next. Or shut up. Look at all the options...

  • i love this version...thanks for posting it

    Thanks a lot highcoaster

    The frenchy

  • Everytime I hear JB sing with another singer, his voice fits all the time with the other person. This is also a great combination with the strong voice of Kathy.
