  • You guys are forgetting that this was really good for its time, they had just 1 guy working on the water of the game for the entire production. I think he did a wonderful job!

  • Meh, i've seen better.

  • i think real water looks better than that...

  • What about halo reaches water?

  • @halo31004 Reach's water isn't as noticable because it looks like they replaced the 3d tesselation with a low res 2d texture. For some reason it looked better in the reach multiplayer trailer where it made waves similar to crysis 2 but bigger and in 3d.

  • this is good for a 2007 game

  • And why is this special?

Lol, it sounds silly when i say this but, there is much better looking water out there.

  • Halo 3 Water look's Phenomenal, Especially for it's time: 2007. Even today it look's amazing.

  • @AmazingGalaxy Yea, to me its better than reach's water which are now 2d or 3d depending on the size and it doesn't work all the time.

  • @turnermic17 I agree! :)

  • halo 3's water sucks as hell !!! last gen games like ico and baldur's gate have 3 times more cool and realistic water than this shit!

  • Also, the ripples are animation effects with normals that progress throughout the water, like your motion sensor/radar with the round sweeper that constantly beeps and blooms out to check for enemies and allies.

  • Actually, its not thousands and thousands of polygons. That would make the game lag badly as the weapon polygon count is around 6000 polies. Its actually a flat plane constructed with render only properties and the effects are made from textures/bitmaps ingame. The moving water is an animated part of the game made in "shaders" with u and v scales and they also use the normal maps for the different shine when the water looks like its moving. Hope that clarifies the problem.

  • shoot it god dammit!!

  • Crysis...

  • @coponcitodemicorazon Crysis' water is just predetermined animation, With Halo 3 You can make actual ripples in the water by walking in it.

Crysis' ripples are animations, masking over the water

    :P

  • I guess you guys have never done any programming. This is NOT dynamic water with its own special geometry which is calculated & created on the run.

    Jesus, fanboys.

  • @noamees You need to relax bro. It's definately not a blender or Maya operation, but this is a dynamic system nonetheless. Instead of one massive giant image plane with ripple shader effects, it's a higher poly version, where the mesh vertices are based on some simple particle physics system.

  • Now can anybody tell me how this happened?

  • Might not be the best looking water. But definitely has the best reaction to object on it.

  • I Found out that when u play in Co-op that it doesn't have water effects. You will see only splashes then

  • i dont think the characters running through are affecting the geometery, it looks like a dynamic normal map

  • Any 1 thought of gmod water? by far the best wate physics but not so much graphic. halo 3 water in gmod= totally amazing.

  • @silentknight3001 The water isn't a particle effect. What he was referring to in the vidoc were things like sparks and rock chips that are controlled by the physics engine.

  • Morrowind did it first

  • Came in here expecting true dynamic water.

    It's just halo water

  • hey. .guys don't forget the water of crysis; it's the best ever !

  • Water on bioshock 2, uncharted 2 and silent hill homecoming is better

  • @njra123

Water in those 3 games are static garbage that don't respond to the player. Halo 3 has actual water physics. That's why Halo 3 water is far better.

  • me thinks uncharted2 water is better!

  • Nope. It may look nice, but the effects are horrible. Objects don't even float in it.

  • @N173 yes they do...

  • I shot an object in the water and it just sunk to the bottom.

  • @N173 thats a little thing called mass. Depending on the objects weight, depends on whether it will sink or not

  • Comment removed

  • Mass? Heh, idiot.

  • wow, great response. uncharted has the highest praise for its water effects as the highest praise would be "it looks like real water". Just listen to yourself, You're comparing halo 3 to uncharted 2, the same uncharted 2 that was game of the year in 09 and in my mind and many others, still is.

  • It's praised for the beauty of the water, something that even I can admit. But when we talking about dynamics and interaction with water, Halo 3 is far ahead.

P.S. Assassin's Creed 2 was my GOTY of 09, just so you know. Uncharted 2 was 2nd, Demon's Souls 3rd, Killzone 2 4th, and Halo ODST 5th. I'm not a fanboy, I can just admit the truth.

  • halo has more interaction with its water because it it usually on a larger scale than what uncharted is, like rivers, lakes and such. whenever i come across water on uncharted it is usually just a puddle or wet surface, it may not be much, but it looks real.IMO i'd rather it look real than have a lot of interactivity. And alsoi think that the ripples created in uncharteds water looks better. I though ODST was shit though, i rented it and im glad i did only rent it.I never said you were a fanboy.

  • That's what I've been saying the entire time? Besides the fact that Uncharted has better ripples, which is entirely untrue.

  • interactivity has nothing to do with actually looking like water. to be honest i think this conversation is over as you clearly must be deluded in some sorts as you think that halo, halo? are you serious, has better water than in that of uncharted. You're fucking blind.

  • Yeah, it has not only way better water than Uncharted 2, but lighting too.

  • sould have gone to spec savers

  • @N173 You clearly have never played Halo 3.

  • @Luis11717

    How so?

  • what I mean is...not "thousands upon thousands"...it mostly shaders doing the work

  • uhm....shaders....not polygons...

  • Not the best water ever, but deformation in it is very good.

Now if they combined the water in crysis's oceans with this water deformation, that would be amazing.

Just imagine, sinking ships and explosions that create dynamic beautiful waves

  • not the best looking water but good anyways

  • YOU'RE NOT THE BEST-LOOKING WATER!

  • lol ^^ im an ugly water

  • @ALixenGAnGsta the tesselation is kind of bad though.

  • I agree completely sir

  • That grunt was as ferocious as the water was glorious!
