A hero is not someone who drives a race car or who dies in a race car crash. Dan Wheldon was known by millions and it was how he was with those people that make him a hero. Most of us will never realize our dreams but he lived out his dream and encouraged kids asking for autographs to act on their dreams no matter what they are. He was good and caring person and THAT is why he is a hero. My son IS a soldier and calling Dan a hero does not make my son less of a hero. Just a different kind.

I am from Buckinghampshire as well, and was so shocked when I heard this. I am a huge fan of formula 1, and know off the great safety measures they have there. This shocked me as this crash wasn't a freak accident, it was a racing incident and I do think Indycar really needs to look at it's safety in the light of this.
The only fitting tribute would be to give the money from the race to his wife & young kids!! Well done the drivers for doing the laps of honour in such a difficult time It's about time they made Indy Car slower...there's no need to do 220mph...I'm from Glasgow and we have F1 cars do around 150mph and we still get loads of entertainment. @The82Hawk I do not agree it was speed at all as this accident is a lift-off. Here there were 34 cars started this race. The big difference there was pack racing and a driver spun and caused chain reaction crash. Dan couldn't avoid this at all and was launched right into the catch fence and was fatally injured. Pack racing on Open Wheels are even more dangerous.

It was only a matter of time before something like this happened. Indy Car needs to figure out a way to keep these cars from flying into the catch fence. They say the hardest laps a driver will ever drive are the four laps when you qualify for the Indianapolis 500. I believe for those nineteen drivers, those five laps were the hardest of their careers. R.I.P. Dan Wheldon. You were a champion both on and off the track and you will be missed dearly.

Can someone fire the worst management team in professional sports? How many more will have to be put in harms way by the duo of Bernard and Barnhardt? Neither one of them know a damn thing about racing. I hope you two are proud of yourselves. First you almost kill people by restarting a wet oval race and now you kill one of the greats on a track meant for 170MPH NASCAR cars, not 220mph Indycars.

I am from Buckinghampshire as well, and was so shocked when I heard this. I am a huge fan of formula 1, and know off the great safety measures they have there. This shocked me as this crash wasn't a freak accident, it was a racing incident and I do think Indycar really needs to look at it's safety in the light of this.

The only fitting tribute would be to give the money from the race to his wife & young kids!! Well done the drivers for doing the laps of honour in such a difficult time It's about time they made Indy Car slower...there's no need to do 220mph...I'm from Glasgow and we have F1 cars do around 150mph and we still get loads of entertainment. RIP Dan Wheldon!!!

@The82Hawk I do not agree it was speed at all as this accident is a lift-off. Here there were 34 cars started this race. The big difference there was pack racing and a driver spun and caused chain reaction crash. Dan couldn't avoid this at all and was launched right into the catch fence and was fatally injured. Pack racing on Open Wheels are even more dangerous.

Sad day for IndyCar, British motorsport, and the Wheldon family. I read that his former teammate Dixie said that he and Emma would do whatever they could for Suzie, Sebastian, and Oliver. God bless you, Scott. Maybe the $5 million prize could be donated to support Dan's family if need be.
I can't imagine what this was like for Dario and TK. They've been through this before with another close friend; Greg Moore.

I cannot believe how disrespectful the announcer was speaking over the PA for the entire 5 laps.
It is always unfortunate when a driver is lost, but particularly so when he is in the prime of his career.

@dfdrummer274 If you listen closely, the announcer was speaking about Dan and saying some warm words to try and calm the people over what had just happened sorta like an emotional pep talk. I guess he could have just kept quiet and just think about it all.

It was only a matter of time before something like this happened. Indy Car needs to figure out a way to keep these cars from flying into the catch fence. First Kenny Brack at Texas, then Sheckter at Chicagoland, now someone finally gets killed... something needs to be done... RIP Dan... you will be sorely missed.
