My mother was concerned by this problem (hereditary on both her mum's and father's sides, but it usually only concerns women), and had her left foot surgered last fall. It takes a little while to recover (a month for the wound to heal and up to one year for pain to vanish), but she now walks more easily.
If you are have bunions too, don't hesitate to undergo an operation!
