what species of cichlid is that at 0:48 ? it looks VERY similar to a Thorichthys Meeki(firemouth cichlid) but something about it looks different...is is a different species of Thorichthys?

thats a convict cichlid... we rehomed him as he grew up to be a bit of a brute and would pick fights with everyone ;)

is that one in the biggining a bichir the alligator looking one cause i saw one at a exotic pet store were it was 200 f-ing bucks and a lungfish was 150 i mean geeze

yes thats a Birchir (Polypterus Delhezi).... $200 is very expensive!!! i think i paid £15 for mine about 1.5 years ago

How do you maintain the tank with all the sand? Do you have an UG filter or something to clean the sand?

No, i use two external cannister filters with a strong output so the dirt just rolls over the surface till it gets sucked up by the filters intake.

Every week or two its important to stir the sand up a bit to release any gas buildup from the nitrosomonous bacteria as this can be toxic to the fish if left untouched... waterchanges are easy, just use a hose and siphon the water in above the sand surface to pick up any leftovers... (not too close or you suck up the sand)

thats a blue acara.... very peacefull community cichlid... dosent grow large and has looks like a jack dempsey or green terror in a way....

i love those oscars theyre like big dopey giants lol who fight but dnt know how to really do any damage...i think your tank would be amazing as a lake malawi tank... like with an ocean rock wall running all throughout the back of tank you could have loads of malawis it would be so kool

I got a pictus catfish and he just hides but i have only had him for what??.....7 Hrs is that what you have?

I have 2 pimelodius pictus catfish left (had 4 but two of them died of old age)... the other large one with the black spots is a sturio cat (also a type of pimelodius).

Pictus cats do well in a group, if you get a couple more they wont hide ;)

What can i keep with a oscar in a 55g with 2 hagen aquaclear 110, heater, 2 air pumps and sand? I would like to keep an Oscar and a firemouth and that catfish with the really long whiskers

that sounds like it would work well... firemouths dont get that big but that can be rather territorial, though im sure the oscar will be able to handle itself ;)

i recently got an interesting shovelnose species catfish and a spotted gar.... I have rehomed the smaller cichlids in other tanks as they were creating a bit of an aggresive vibe in the tank and its wasnt peaceful to watch ;)

I've rehomed the smaller cichlids in another tank. I was not happy with the vibe as all of the fish were a bit skittish. I'll do another video hopefully this weekend... got a new pimelodius/shovelnose cat and a spotted gar in there now :)

to be honest its all down to the fish really.. they can all vary in personality and temperament.

generally any large cichlid kept on its own in a tank will be aggressive towards anything that enters its tank, but you can find some people with GT's and JD's who keep them perfectly fine with other fish

mine are like half the size of yours and i could only have one other fish in there

and thats cuz its bigger than them

lol... i hypnotised them into thinking they are neon tetras :D

nah the secret is to grow your oscars up from babies with other small fish so they get used to them... and the only live food they get is earthworms, bugs and live river shrimp... they dont see fish as food.

also dont put shoaling fish in with them (like danios etc..) as they run from predators and kick in their chase instinct. cichlids do fine as they stand their ground ;)

just wondering if some of the fish you have in your tank are bolivian butterfly rams/cichlids? They seem to have similar markings but are a little bigger than what i've seen.. keep up the awesome work.. i loves watching your videos..

i have 2 keyhole cichlids and a blue acara... those are dwarf cichlid species but different from ram cichlids :)

what kind of syndontis catfish is in the pot at around :24 seconds i have two in my 55 gal tank i was curious what kind of syndontis they were got them from petsmart under a false name...

Its a hybrid cukoo / leopard synodontis... i wasnt sure either for a long time ;)

They get quite large... had mine for about 3 years and he's huge now (for a syno)

yeah they are getting pretty beefy... i think i have 2 males as they both getting big humps on the head... fortunately theres enough space in the tank for them to all get along fine or escape if neccessary ;)

The two are really nice specimens ;-) I got the one red-tiger Oscar(10/11 inch, 3yr old), started of with what I was assured were a pair, but must have been two males, if I hadnt got one out, well, you know how it would have went ;-( I'm growing up a Jack Dempsey(male, by the looks of the finnage)to see if the two can get on, but I think I still got a year to go before I can try an introduction.

Anywho's, you keep a lovely aquarium ;-)
