The show could've had a lot longer of a life and more intricate storylines if they had kept on character favorites from the first season. The original group dynamic with Luke and Anna, and having kept Jimmy, Hailey, and Caleb around longer - it could've been more of an ensemble show rather than having directed its focus on the core four. That's why 90210 lasted as long as it did.
