@NaughtyGnade You can do anything in photoshop :D Its simple... do the first way he showed you by outlining the subject with the pen tool then going select>invert... but after that... instead of desaturating the photo... simply go edit>fill>black/white... theres more ways than that to do this but thats one
i like to layer via copy the objects that i want to keep in color for the reason of finer selecting images and areas so i can go and delete or erase parts
Okie dokie now, when I open the image, all I have is the hand thing-even when I click on the brush. The circle does not appear and it doesn't let me make changes. am I doing something wrong?
When I made the selection...I made it a feathered selection...so... I guess you could do that too..but you don't want too much of the BG colored ya know?
what i do is pretty much like the second way you show except I duplicate the image layer and desaturate the bottom layer and add a layer mask to the top layer and use the paintbrush tool to erase the unwanted parts
i duplicate my original layer. and then make the first layer black and white. and then set the eraser to about 20% and start erasing of the bit i need in colour. [thus showing the coloured image in the second layer]
my method of partial desaturation or selective colouring is by duplicating the layer, desaturate the top layer, and mask out the object you want coloured.
The way I Achieve this effect is by taking the background image and duplicate it. Then with the bottom layer which sould be the background layer desaturate it by going to image>adjustment>desaturate then to view it turn off the top layer. then turn the top layer back on, then pretty much how you selected the main subject with the pen tool and make the selection but then just click the layer mask button at the bottom of the layers palette (square with circle) then tada :D
thanks. 8) Yeah...I remember when I found out how to do this...I went crazy...I have so much fun now just applying this effect to lambo pics and such..lol
If u thumbed downed this cuz you couldn't follow this. You are one stupid mutha fucka!

both are good ways!
I'll just go with the layer masks its easier than the pen tool because it takes a long time to get smooth edges but i guess both tips are good !

I like using the pen tool for easy shaped objects and using the adjustment layer for more difficult objects like people. 8)
