  • Ireland for the Irish, not for London or for Rome!!

  • U know this song is a little scary!! But I LOVE it!!! It's great!!

  • she is one heck on an under rated singer..

  • I like this version better than the original, just because her voice is more... mysterious.

  • I personally prefer the original , but I really like this version, too :)

  • While I like the Decemberists more, I prefer her version of this song.

  • Good, she certainly does a good cover.

  • My favorite Decemberists song. This was a very beautiful cover.

  • It's things like this song that makes one feel both mushy (in a heart-melting way) and yet so BA for being Catholic. I love it.

  • not as creepy as the Decemberists

  • i want the mp3..........pretty please ^^

  • The BBC documentary, Shankill Butchers , screened in March, 2011, rekindled public interest in one of the most horrific of the Loyalist death-squads active during the period known as T he Troubles . The Shankill Butchers gained the grim nickname due to their modus operandi of murdering many of their, mostly Catholic victims, with butcher knives, meat cleavers and axes, primarily in an area of North Belfast which became known as the murder triangle.

  • Why would God bless another bunch of murdering scum , dickhead

  • @kdwskdws Where Irish and this is IRELAND so fuck off use british basterds. Now use are in Afganistan getting blew to shit. Get the message. INVADERS MUST DIE

  • Here in Belfast on their gravestone it says "Here lies a soldier", nothing but cowardly scum killing innocent catholics in the most brutal way they could.

    God Bless the IRA

  • @FIntyMAcC10 ain't that hypocritical lol. The original IRA? That did right for Ireland, it was a bunch of freedom fighters. The Provisional IRA? That's something else entirely as bad. In the 70's? The worry wasn't about a Islamic Extremist committing a suicide bombing, the worry was about a member of the Provisional IRA.

    THERE'S a fecking HUGE difference.

  • you also remind me of someone in the decemberists band

  • Nice voice great cover (:

  • Respect to maneggl who can throw his respect around like loose confetti

  • Respect the IRA for putting twnenty rounds into Shankill Butchers leader.

  • lol i love the comment sthis song is against the shankill butchers you mongoloids. the decemberists are irish americans.

  • Love it!

  • I really can't decide which version I love more. I like the Decemberist's version but it just doesn't seem to have the passion that Sarah's one does, however (And I know how stupid this sounds) when she says "...sharpening their cleavers and their knives..." it sounds like she's singing with a blocked nose (I.E. a cold). It may just be the way she naturally talks though. It annoys me that I can't stop noticing it. Still, this is a beautiful rendition regardless. 9.5 out of 10!

  • Her voice is perfection, and I love this song.

  • Gorgeous. This has got to be one of the best things I've heard in ages.

  • Wonderful and Haunting

  • @jpalmer222 Exactly what she was aiming for, I'm sure.

  • @CherchezMoi I absolutely agree with you -3

  • It's beautiful and haunting. I don't think this song is glorifying murder as I've seen in some of the comments. Just one of many songs about human evil and tragedy... songs, books and movies are often borne from such tragedies, all part of our thirst to learn more about the dark side of life.

  • @CherchezMoi Good on you for taking the time out to write that

  • AAHH THIS IS SO AWESOME ARQC WDTKYUTHBVR EBVTHSBVECRT

  • Wow you sound awesome!!!

  • POOR OLD LENNY, MET THE IRA ONE DAY, THEY SHOT HIM 20 TIMES,AND THEN THEY WALKED AWAY

  • God Bless the Devils Brigade, UVF

    lest we forget

  • When being just a lad like you, I joined the IRA

  • @Robinjackassjackson,so I post that the butchers=scum and from that you deduce that I'm a taig? You have mental health issues.

  • god bless pandora radio

  • unique, beaufiful voice!

  • the song is so creepy but i really love hearing the guitar instrumental in the beginning. i wish there was an instrumental version ~

  • And they did pretty much exactly the same thing -- the only difference is they won.

Basically, if you're going to thumbs me either way on this, consider this as the point to my whole comment. Both sides of The Troubles, Shankill Butchers inclusive, should be neither revered or despised for acting so desperately, merely studied and learned from.

  • I love that a /vast/ majority of the posters on this vid are saying "F. the SB! Bastards!" or the opposite, and backing them. While yes, what the SB did was reprehensible, you've got to look at the other side of the story, too. Remember, the UVF and IRA (used as a broader term for all parties) were THE two most violent organizations in Irish history.

That said, while no-one should be backing them, no-one should be condemning them either. I mean, the French Resistance aren't viewed as terrorists.

  • @therebelmedic I feel comfortable condemning a bunch of cereal killers who murdered random civilians.

  • Comment removed

  • @Einchy1 I feel comfortable condemning a bunch of cereal... wait, WHAT?

  • @Biverix Fucking typos, how do they work?

  • i would love the mp3 to this song, can you send it to me?

  • Darren King from MuteMath sent me here. I'm glad he did, I really like this. :)

  • i like this version wayyyy better

  • Sounds awesome!

  • She does The Decemberists justice (in my opinion)

  • @koga711 Frankly, she leaves 'em in the dust with this :)

  • Please don't give away her music for free! Buy it! She (and The Decemberists) both deserve the few pennies they earn on each tune! Great song, great version.

  • @Elephame

    Yep. Its called an anti-lullaby.

  • FGAU, Up the UDA, UVF.

  • It's a good cover, but I think I like The Decemberists' version better. It was creepier, but it was also very captivating--like a disturbing fairytale or lullaby.

  • NO SURRENDER

  • tune yaas

  • The shankill butchers were sectarian scum, and I'm a prod.

  • gr8 song

    up the SHANKHILL BUTCHERS!!!!!!!!!!!

  • omg fuckin scumbags..fuck the s.hill butchers SCUMMY BASTARDS

  • wow great cover

  • Look, you can jam out to a song that talks about niggas and bitches and suckin dick, but someone makes a song about a tradgedy that happened over 30 years ago and portrays the legend status it has aquired, you flip shit. Grow some balls, appriciate the music for what it is, dont make it out to be something it isn't, and move on.

  • @SleepDeprivedApe well said

  • Look, this girls dad is my Gov. Teacher. I've hung out with her once or twice. She's a legend in our town. Would you mind not handing out her music for free...

  • so should I buy the CD from amazon? I mean what difference does it make, she isn't seeing any of the money.

  • He wrote it as a reference a parental bedtime scare tactic - "everybody knows if you don't mind your mother's words, a wicked wind will blow ribbons from your curls, the shankill wanna catch you awake" Kind of like when a parent says if you dont behave santa wont bring you anything. He was talking about the strange and omnious fairytale it became.

  • well at least that makes one of you

  • im from the shankill

  • this song is chilling beautiful-- so powerful, can't believe that this really happened less than thirty years ago...

  • I want the MP3. D:

  • Er, the song makes them into fairy tale boogeymen, which is very much on par with what these monsters were; like in El Laberinto del Fauno, the real ogre is all too human.

  • Yeah because butchers from the 1800's are on a mad rampage through the states killing people. I don't think this happens much anymore.

  • actually the butchers were a terrorist group from northern ireland in the 1970's.

  • This cover is fantastic!

  • if shes frm texas en why da fuck is she singin bout the shankill butchers..SICK !!

  • @courtneyjc1 she didn't write it Colin Meloy did from the decemberists

  • Umm no she didn't write it its a COVER! the Decemberists wrote the song :P Read the description before you say shit

  • no... colin meloy of the decemberists wrote it.

  • YESSSS!!! I'm so happy I found her. I was bored at school and Jarosz is my boyfriend's last name so I googled it and found her. Shes amazing. This is the exact music I like. :D

  • Googling your boyfriend's name isn't weird or anything....

  • touché

  • Getting back on topic of the video, great cover Sarah! Very classy

  • sarah jarosz does a good cover of this, but not half as creepy as the decemberists. ^^

  • if you'd remember it was the decemberists who wrote this song, itd make more sense. its like in 'a cautionary song' (So be kind to your mother/Though she may seem an awful bother/And the next time she tries to feed you collard greens/Remember what she does when you're asleep)

its like this song is told to children them to frighten them into listening to their parents, just like a cautionary song is told to guilt them into...eating their greens.

    ^^

  • Well for all of your bickering, you've apparently missed the point of both the song, and the interpretation. This song is about the Grim Reaper. It's about a mother's protective warning to her little girls to not be off and running about in the night, less they be caught up by the evil creatures of the night. Also a stern warning to young women to listen to their mothers protective wisdom, less they find themselves, sadly, beyond anyone's ability to assist them because of their life choices.

  • @WarriorChiron Actually it isn't that general. It is about the Cath/Prot conflict in Belfast, specifically on a notorious group involved in the conflict. I like your interpretation, very creative, however a little neglecting to the historical significance of this song.

  • Big Jock knew how to manage a team that won the Big cup. That shower a shite will never have it in their trophy cabinet vermin scumbag

  • Rangers 52

    Septic 42

That proud 'Irish' club that won the European cup with a team full of proud Scotsmen. You'll never be as big a club as Rangers.

Hullo hullo we are the billy boys,

hullo hullo you'll know us by our noise,

we're up to our knees in fenian blood surrender or you'll die.

  • the great laugh behind all this is neither London nor Dublin even want you lot; It's just a question of who has to subsidize you. you think your queen is proud of the 'billy boys'? You think you're average londoner's a fan of the shankill butchers? Truth be told, outside Ibrox, you're just a mild embarrassment to Britain. Fair play to them for sticking it.

  • Couldn't care less about what the average Londoner thinks, 99% of them don't have a clue about what it's like in Belfast. Even today there is still sectarianism, we still have the peace line separating the Falls rd and Shankill rd. Embarrassment to Britain? We are the pride of Britain, the English may let the Muslims take over, but we won't let the fenians take over our native land.

  • "We are the pride of Britain, the English may let the Muslims take over, but we won't let the fenians take over our native land."

wow, i think you just made my case for me. Have fun with that whole bigotry racket, just glad it's not my Dublin tax money funding your dole cheques. Dare i say, "thank god and ulster" for it...

In a way, i'm rather sorry for you, glaring at the 'dirty taigs' over the wall while sham 1-topic politicians from both sides run the whole lot of you into the shitter...

  • You seem to judge everyone in Belfast, "sham 1-topic politicians from both sides run the whole lot of you into the shitter..." I presume that since your profile says you're from Ireland you wouldn't know what life is like in Belfast. Fortunately I wasn't born during the troubles, but from what I hear, even as a young lad you had to go collect bottles though the day so they could be used as petrol bombs at night.

You're just another outsider looking in.

  • exactly, and why do you think that shit lasted so long? Because hate-mongers like the provos and the UVF only thrive when there's conflict. Remove the conflict and it becomes obvious that they're just gun running drug pushers that kill children in the name of an ideology. Meanwhile they spew "remember 1690"/"tiocfaidh ar la" crap to perpetuate hatreds because, should the next generation actually learn to get along, it'd be crystal clear what a bunch of parasites they all are on the rest of you.

  • There will never be peace in Belfast, some people just don't get along. It is ridiculous to think that people can live yards away from each other but have so much hatred for each other, but that's the way it is. I have always been told that the IRA are the enemy, and when you see what the bastards have done you see why they are the enemy. It will NEVER change, and none of the peace walls should ever be taken down.

  • shame that you feel that way. both communities up there deserve more genuine working class heroes than those hate-spitting child killers can ever offer you.

  • @BelfastRFC BLACK CUNT

  • You're an invader saying that.

  • what a fool

  • 88-89/94-95 what happened, you didn't finish first or second for 7 seven years.

  • Fuck your pope and your ira. God Save The Queen. WAPT!!

  • I see the vermin infestation has came back again and what an intellectual comment from our filthy friend.. GBTP

  • fenian fucker. Big Jock Knew, filthy Catholic bastards.

  • Hi thats a great version of the song well done. Its a pity the the comments log has been tarnished by the filth from the hovel that is mentioned in the song.. GBTP

  • FUCK THE POPE, you taigy bastard. FGAU

  • Shankill butchers are legends. Michael stone = hero. Up the UVF.

  • this is like having a nice song about hitler

  • Damn good.

  • JSarmbru us scots know alot more than u poofy americans haha who lives closer thought so :S u know fuck awll aboot it if yer writtin comments like at so shush n keep it dubbed till ye noo wit yer tawkin aboot :)) pity ure no wan the shankhill butchers got

  • She came to Fredericksburg, TX couple years before she started singing by herself she might come again this year the Historical Society wants her back...she can sing really well.

  • If you like this Sarah J. song -- you'll like the rest.

  • @minormillikin The song isn't by Sarah J though. It's by the decemberists so check out the decemberists instead

  • If you take the vocal harmonies out, this is a perfectly good cover.

  • I gotta agree, I could do without the harmonies.

However overall I'm pleased Ms. Jarosz's version of this song.

  • if u look into what the song means n i do ? strange so much talk about these boys but nuthin bout y they became defenders of an IRA onslot n ye they killed but Y ?

  • @kevinfoxbar English, do you speak it?

  • having heard both versions i cannot say which is the better of the two! i personally would like to see her do this song with a bit more...oh wots the word. if it were just a little more sinister. I can hear in her voice she's capable!! very lovely song.

  • Thanks for sharing this song here. I heard it today on XM15 and was quite impressed. Will be ordering your cd from amazon. You are very talented young performer.

  • Hey, was nice to dance with you, thanks for learning me the 2 step :D, now your known over the sea =) in the little country switzerland xD best regards andreas

  • now here's a real voice. age is no matter, she captivates her audience singlehandedly. this is a sweet rendition of a dark song.

  • So what does a 31 year old snotty Scot know of the Shankhill Butchers? Sarah's doing a cover of the Decemberists' tune, very well.

  • why is she abysmal? art is most often inspired by horrific real life events. this song is not glorifying it, simply relaying to a new generation

  • 0:12-1:12

  • VERYVERY NICE SONG :D

but, what are shankill butchers ?

    & i agree with Kamina. (;

  • a Shankill Butchers was a loyalist gang that was part of the Ulster Volunteer Force It conducted paramilitary activities in Belfast, Northern Ireland during the 1970s. It was most notorious for its late-night abduction torture and murder by throat slashing of random Catholic civilians.

  • The Shankill Butchers killed at least 30 people (including a significant number of Protestants) in sectarian attacks, paramilitary feuds, personal grudges and bombing raids. Despite extensive police resources being channeled towards the capture of those responsible, a wall of silence, created by a mixture of fear and respect in the Shankill community, provided few leads that could be followed.

  • According to Connor Cruise O'Brien, the Butchers, led by Lenny Murphy, brought a new, frightening level of paramilitary violence to a country already hardened by death and destruction. While the majority of the gang were eventually caught and received the longest combined prison sentences

  • in British legal history, Murphy and his two chief lieutenants escaped prosecution. He was later killed in November 1982 by the Provisional IRA, likely acting with loyalist paramilitaries who perceived him as a threat. and thatc what a Shankill Butcher is

  • WOW. thats very...violent.

    D:

thankyou for a review on them

    <3.
