The BBC documentary, Shankill Butchers , screened in March, 2011, rekindled public interest in one of the most horrific of the Loyalist death-squads active during the period known as T he Troubles . The Shankill Butchers gained the grim nickname due to their modus operandi of murdering many of their, mostly Catholic victims, with butcher knives, meat cleavers and axes, primarily in an area of North Belfast which became known as the murder triangle.
@kdwskdws Where Irish and this is IRELAND so fuck off use british basterds. Now use are in Afganistan getting blew to shit. Get the message. INVADERS MUST DIE
Here in Belfast on their gravestone it says "Here lies a soldier", nothing but cowardly scum killing innocent catholics in the most brutal way they could.
@FIntyMAcC10 ain't that hypocritical lol. The original IRA? That did right for Ireland, it was a bunch of freedom fighters. The Provisional IRA? That's something else entirely as bad. In the 70's? The worry wasn't about a Islamic Extremist committing a suicide bombing, the worry was about a member of the Provisional IRA.
I really can't decide which version I love more. I like the Decemberist's version but it just doesn't seem to have the passion that Sarah's one does, however (And I know how stupid this sounds) when she says "...sharpening their cleavers and their knives..." it sounds like she's singing with a blocked nose (I.E. a cold). It may just be the way she naturally talks though. It annoys me that I can't stop noticing it. Still, this is a beautiful rendition regardless. 9.5 out of 10!
It's beautiful and haunting. I don't think this song is glorifying murder as I've seen in some of the comments. Just one of many songs about human evil and tragedy... songs, books and movies are often borne from such tragedies, all part of our thirst to learn more about the dark side of life.
And they did pretty much exactly the same thing -- the only difference is they won.
Basically, if you're going to thumbs me either way on this, consider this as the point to my whole comment. Both sides of The Troubles, Shankill Butchers inclusive, should be neither revered or despised for acting so desperately, merely studied and learned from.
I love that a /vast/ majority of the posters on this vid are saying "F. the SB! Bastards!" or the opposite, and backing them. While yes, what the SB did was reprehensible, you've got to look at the other side of the story, too. Remember, the UVF and IRA (used as a broader term for all parties) were THE two most violent organizations in Irish history.
That said, while no-one should be backing them, no-one should be condemning them either. I mean, the French Resistance aren't viewed as terrorists.
Please don't give away her music for free! Buy it! She (and The Decemberists) both deserve the few pennies they earn on each tune! Great song, great version.
It's a good cover, but I think I like The Decemberists' version better. It was creepier, but it was also very captivating--like a disturbing fairytale or lullaby.
Look, you can jam out to a song that talks about niggas and bitches and suckin dick, but someone makes a song about a tradgedy that happened over 30 years ago and portrays the legend status it has aquired, you flip shit. Grow some balls, appriciate the music for what it is, dont make it out to be something it isn't, and move on.
Look, this girls dad is my Gov. Teacher. I've hung out with her once or twice. She's a legend in our town. Would you mind not handing out her music for free...

I find it disturbing that anyone should think this song worthy of praise. It has a fine tune, no argument there. But in its tone and in the way it portrays a shocking, violent and atrocious spree of murder and torture in the very recent past in Northern Ireland it shows disregard for the suffering of a community, it mocks the reality of the barbarism committed and shames those who take such a blithe attitude. This song should be retired. It is misjudged and sadly out of character for this band.
Er, the song makes them into fairy tale boogeymen, which is very much on par with what these monsters were; like in El Laberinto del Fauno, the real ogre is all too human.
YESSSS!!! I'm so happy I found her. I was bored at school and Jarosz is my boyfriend's last name so I googled it and found her. Shes amazing. This is the exact music I like. :D
if you'd remember it was the decemberists who wrote this song, itd make more sense. its like in 'a cautionary song' (So be kind to your mother/Though she may seem an awful bother/And the next time she tries to feed you collard greens/Remember what she does when you're asleep)
its like this song is told to children them to frighten them into listening to their parents, just like a cautionary song is told to guilt them into...eating their greens.
Well for all of your bickering, you've apparently missed the point of both the song, and the interpretation. This song is about the Grim Reaper. It's about a mother's protective warning to her little girls to not be off and running about in the night, less they be caught up by the evil creatures of the night. Also a stern warning to young women to listen to their mothers protective wisdom, less they find themselves, sadly, beyond anyone's ability to assist them because of their life choices.
@WarriorChiron Actually it isn't that general. It is about the Cath/Prot conflict in Belfast, specifically on a notorious group involved in the conflict. I like your interpretation, very creative, however a little neglecting to the historical significance of this song.
the great laugh behind all this is neither London nor Dublin even want you lot; It's just a question of who has to subsidize you. you think your queen is proud of the 'billy boys'? You think you're average londoner's a fan of the shankill butchers? Truth be told, outside Ibrox, you're just a mild embarrassment to Britain. Fair play to them for sticking it.
Couldn't care less about what the average Londoner thinks, 99% of them don't have a clue about what it's like in Belfast. Even today there is still sectarianism, we still have the peace line separating the Falls rd and Shankill rd. Embarrassment to Britain? We are the pride of Britain, the English may let the Muslims take over, but we won't let the fenians take over our native land.
"We are the pride of Britain, the English may let the Muslims take over, but we won't let the fenians take over our native land."

You seem to judge everyone in Belfast, "sham 1-topic politicians from both sides run the whole lot of you into the shitter..." I presume that since your profile says you're from Ireland you wouldn't know what life is like in Belfast. Fortunately I wasn't born during the troubles, but from what I hear, even as a young lad you had to go collect bottles though the day so they could be used as petrol bombs at night.
exactly, and why do you think that shit lasted so long? Because hate-mongers like the provos and the UVF only thrive when there's conflict. Remove the conflict and it becomes obvious that they're just gun running drug pushers that kill children in the name of an ideology. Meanwhile they spew "remember 1690"/"tiocfaidh ar la" crap to perpetuate hatreds because, should the next generation actually learn to get along, it'd be crystal clear what a bunch of parasites they all are on the rest of you.
There will never be peace in Belfast, some people just don't get along. It is ridiculous to think that people can live yards away from each other but have so much hatred for each other, but that's the way it is. I have always been told that the IRA are the enemy, and when you see what the bastards have done you see why they are the enemy. It will NEVER change, and none of the peace walls should ever be taken down.
shame that you feel that way. both communities up there deserve more genuine working class heroes than those hate-spitting child killers can ever offer you.

a Shankill Butchers was a loyalist gang that was part of the Ulster Volunteer Force It conducted paramilitary activities in Belfast, Northern Ireland during the 1970s. It was most notorious for its late-night abduction torture and murder by throat slashing of random Catholic civilians.
The Shankill Butchers killed at least 30 people (including a significant number of Protestants) in sectarian attacks, paramilitary feuds, personal grudges and bombing raids. Despite extensive police resources being channeled towards the capture of those responsible, a wall of silence, created by a mixture of fear and respect in the Shankill community, provided few leads that could be followed.
According to Connor Cruise O'Brien, the Butchers, led by Lenny Murphy, brought a new, frightening level of paramilitary violence to a country already hardened by death and destruction. While the majority of the gang were eventually caught and received the longest combined prison sentences
in British legal history, Murphy and his two chief lieutenants escaped prosecution. He was later killed in November 1982 by the Provisional IRA, likely acting with loyalist paramilitaries who perceived him as a threat. and thatc what a Shankill Butcher is

Alot more than you or her! I have alot of relatives who live in belfast and lived through the atrocities ok. She is abysmal, a bit like you! x

why is she abysmal? art is most often inspired by horrific real life events. this song is not glorifying it, simply relaying to a new generation

a Shankill Butchers was a loyalist gang that was part of the Ulster Volunteer Force It conducted paramilitary activities in Belfast, Northern Ireland during the 1970s.
