Most of these were used on farms where electricity wasn't available. Many uses: pumping water, sawing wood, threshing, grinding, corn shelling, hay bailing, etc. Portable, so could be used for all different chores any given day. Now we use them on ice cream freezers! Mmmm!

are all of these engines what you would call 'hit and miss' engines? If not, what were their purposes? Pumping? Fascinating!
