@NinjXPk Thats an interesting essay topic. Whether we would be a thousand years ahead, had Rome continued to rule or not. I am inclined to disagree for arguments sake. It is true that the barbarians brought with them many primitive ways of thinking, yet did that set us back? One of the things that ended because of the barbarian invasions is slavery. and slavery already kept us set back for thousands of years. We simply did not use inventions because it wasn't economical when you have slaves.
@3dwardcullen69 You forget that after rome fell the progress of the world stopped for a thousand years, Think of it this way after Rome fell it took us so long to get back to where they left off that Rome would have pushed us into the stars far sooner. This may be off topic but I would check out the book "Roma Eterna" it talks of much the same thing in a world where rome never fell. Obviously fiction but interesting to thing about none the less.
@orome21 No I haven't forgotten about the world being set back supposedly for a millennium. I made my comment in light of the dark ages. While it is mainly true that western Europe experienced an age of descent namely in infrastructure, (due to feudalism and religion), it is untrue for the eastern Roman empire, where Constantinople became the light of the world. It was for almost that same millennium the most powerful and richest city, which was also a bastion of knowledge and Roman continuity.
It depends on what you are referring to. If you are talking about running water, sewer systems, baths, roads, ect. Then yes, western Europe was set back significantly after the fall of Rome. But not all things technological were set back. For example weapons and seafaring technologies improved greatly during the dark ages. The adaptation of the barbarian way of governing: feudalism was by no means a scientific progression but it ended the slave economy which forced us to adapt other technologies
@NinjXPk isn't it possible that it's the other way around? Many examples, but an obvious one is when Justinian I closed down all the philosophical schools around 500AD... and when the holy roman church burned so many books... isn't philosophy and knowledge the precursor to applied knowledge (technology)?
@dec2 The Rome I refer to existed between the time of Hannibal all the way until about Marcus Aurelius. The Rome that existed during then supported literature, advancements in technology and engineering, and studied greek philosophy. The Rome after was (and I don't mean to antagonize Christians) became a different body. It lost interest in many aspects of Roman and Greek tradition as it became a largely Christian Empire. Like you said, it was the Holy Roman Church that burned the books.
Everyone is blind to the fact that Rome wasn't conquered. Germanic peoples not only romanized themselves but became protecters and emperors of Rome. Just because power structure shifted from emperor to the bishop doesnt make it any less Roman. If the eastern empire can be consider Roman with out the city Rome than y cant Francia and holy roman empire who in fact did served the city Rome not be consider Roman. Rome became even more powerful under Pope and Germanic emperors and colonized the world

haha America? New Rome? America is shit compared to Ancient Rome and its gigantic History and legacy, So stop flathering yourself with Bullshit like "America is the new Rome". America is just a place made up by European colonists with a very very young history, Only 300 years or so i think?
The West fell to invasion about 50 years after the empire was divided for the first time in it's history after a civil war. Constantine took the best & brightest with him to build his new capital in the East, leaving the borders guarded by inexperienced & diminished forces. And when the West asked for help the East refused. And a thousand years later, when the East asked for help, the West refused (for religious reasons) & then the East fell.
@theOFFICEblock One should read of genocide of Hindus,Buddhists and Sikhs at the hands of Muslims... as they were not protected people according to Quran. It will help to counter the Islamic propaganda that Islam is peaceful and only retaliates when west attacks it be it crusades or today( a lie ofcourse).Hindu and Buddhist India was attacked unprovoked and more than 80 millions were killed during 11th-14th century according to conservative estimates..
I do not see all this rassomaglianza between the United States and the Rome of the past, partly because there is no tradition, culture and identity in common, if anything, the U.S. wanted to take the symbols that represent Rome, see Capitol , the eagle, the beams, the Latin mottoes, the aqueduct in New York, and more! Remember, Rome, exists and will exist only one, the other, are nobody!! ....
Why does everyone think has ended? 330 AD the capital moved from Rome to Constantinople. They replaced the name of someone called Caesar to a someone called Pope, as it was easier to control the masses by faith rather than by sword. In 1945 it moved to Washington D.C. Hasn't anyone seen what Washington resembles yet?
@marvingo49 Powerful people usually don't get the results they want even when they are able to operate openly with wide public support, so it is absurd to suppose that any group can control things secretly. Human society is just too complex to be put in harness. History is just a lot of half-botched plans and muddling through. No one is really in charge.
The U.S. is in decline, at the end of WW2 it was THE superpower, the end of the cold war was like the end of the Gauls or Carthage, its weird the parallels. and Schutzstaffel23 why are you spouting when you have no idea what you're talking about?
The Pantheon was constructed by Marcus Agrippa (which it says in big letters in latin above the columns). It was severely damaged by the Great Fire of Rome so Hadrian restored the building. Great Video , Nice montage.
God's people always prevails over satan's army....History is a great example on that. From Egypt to Rome and all other Empires in history were defeated by people of God. Today Islam is being attacked just like the early true Christians who were persecuted by the Roman's. God promised this time to protect the holy book from hands of men. Islam is the fastest growing religion on earth and its the most persecuted religion on earth. The truth is supressed, but God is the ultimate winner.
@blaqsoldier I thought the Christian and Muslim god was the same one. Are there 2 gods maybe and if not....why would he love one more than the other? Isn´t it like liking one son and hating the other? If so...he must be a pretty wicked devil.
@marvingo49 God the father that Christians worship is the true God not Jesus(pbuh). Its a yes and no answer. The early Christians worshiped God alone and did not associate partners with him nor sons and daughters. To them Jesus(pbuh) was a prophet send by God just as Moses and Abraham(peace be upon them) were. Christianity was changed later on by Roman Emperor Constantine and added the Trinity lies. It kinda suits their pagan beliefs.
Rome persecuted the true Chirstians early in Christian era. They killed them mercilessly and guess what Christianity increased in number despite all the persecution. The Romans changed their tactics and adopted Christianity. They changed the religion to suit their pagan religion. Thats why God send the last prophet Muhammad(pbuh) a mercy for mankind. The Roman's never vanished, they changed their tactics, thats all. Now The Americans are the new Rome. They have the same system as Rome..
rome destroyed itself sadly but if they did survive i would hope that there ideals on controlling with fear would have chnaged aswell as the enjoyment of brutal fighting as a sport :/
@MrMarco08 Rome does exist nowadays haha it's America. It's not an arrogant delusion either it's what the founding fathers set out to do. The United States is the New Rome. Look it up the similarities will blow your mind.
@Nurglegurgle The USA is obviously an influential Empire, but I don't think it will be able to compare with the Roman Empire. The historians of the future will decide this. The Roman Empire lasted 500 years, and if we include the Roman Republic as well it was a millennium. Let's see how long USA will last. My personal opinion is that it won't surpass 300 years.
@panarkas Look at side compareing rome and america ....How many enemies rome have and how many america? Rome was fighting wars on all sides..(attack and defense). And in list of rome enemies there was Carthaginians strong same as romans and they have better fleet in the begining Rome did not have any ships in first punic war. Gauls, Barbarian tribes from Germania and other states. Atila the hun. Roman war on edge of destruction lots of time but they survive. Lastly they destroy themselves.
@Saturnclass Fighting wars on all sides is stupidity. Hitler tried to do the same, and his kingdom fell apart. America is in a lot of wars now. We have our nose in almost everyone's business. You can't expect wars to be the same as they used to be. We have airplanes now.
The question was can america fight war against Russia, Europe, itd and last for 1000 years. And when i say wars i mean real fighting not political war. Yeah Hitler is nice example. Also Rome is other example of destruction from inside.
@Saturnclass That's also correct. The Roman Empire had to face many more threats and enemies. The USA haven't been invaded by everyone to see how they would react. Also they can't be proud about land conquests as they took most of their land by committing a mass genocide against the natives, taking advantage of the fact they had European gunpowder in their disposal while the natives didn't. They even bought a big part of their lands from France, Spain and Russia.
@Saturnclass To be honest, I think someone would launch a nuke. I can't really see a super power, such as the United States, going down without using their whole arsenal of weapons. Moreover, I don't think all of Europe would attack the US. We have strong relations with the UK. We also have strong relations with Israel, which doesn't fuck around. Europe really isn't a threat. Russia would be a bigger threat than all of Europe combined.
@panarkas I think the Roman Republic may also be included as Empire, especially if we're comparing it to the US. Now 750bc to 1806 ad gives 2556 years. Remember, it's an article of faith the Rome was always one.
@panarkas I think it will last longer th an 300 years. We have been around for almost 300 years now. Besides, the world is a different place now. We all have weapons that can completely destroy a whole country. I think America will change from democracy, however, I don't think America will die as an empire.
@faveology Your logic is right but I wasn't implying that USA will collapse after a full scale war with Russia or China. In my opinion USA will fall from the inside and with a confluence from the South. I believe the possibility for a 3rd world war or a nuclear war is minimal, the dispute between the world's top powers will keep focused in other fields. I agree with you about Europe not being a threat for anyone, I expect them to be even weaker and more dependent to others in the coming years.
@MrMarco08 It does exist. It's called America. Both Rome and America were and are Republics. The key to greatness is a government by the people. An arsenal of democracy is almost invincible. Religion and socialism are the enemies of republics. Can you name any other republics other than Rome and America?
@MaximvsDread Dude rome became a dictatorship of emperors which where replaced by the Pope who than crowned Germanic emperors who served Rome. America doesnt even come close, Germany and Germanic nations like france, spain, italy england, etc, Have always served the pope, Hell the European union parliment has a Giant statue of the Pope smack in the middle. Rome is still Rome with makeover of Germanic peoples, with Germany and France as the center of power of Romes arm.
Ancient world was cool....I wonder what would have happened if Ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt were not destroyed by stupid Abrahmic religions and India was not shattered by evil Islam(even though India is only ancient civ which survives)...There pragmatism, scientific tradition and thousands of years of knowledge would have survived..
Note: When Muslims burned Nalanda University in India it kept on burning for 6 days.Thousands of years of knowledge lost just because it was against Quran:(
@anu123km we must stage nation wide Quran burnings to show this cult it is not welcome, WE MUST RALLY THE ENEMIES OF FREE SPEECH AND ITS ALLIES WITH THIS SINGLE DEMONSTRATION ALONE!!
@magnvsmarcvs so??? I was talking about India and not Egypt....anyways those were bastards who burned Library of Alexandria....Proves that religions especially Abrahmic religions are bane of humanity.
@anu123km What about the lost knowladge of Islam, Europa learnt a lot of positive science from Islamic Civilization..But when Spanish took Iberian Peninsula, When Mongols took Baghdad and Crusaider took Jarussalem, what happened ? did they clean library's dust ? You said burn in India get during 6 days, When Baghdad get sucked, Euphrates fluid with book during 6 days too
@anu123km When we destroyed Andalus Empire, we only rescued only 30 books and now we can fractionate the atom, If we saved all of this library, now we can transport between galaxies
Search on internet, which famoust scientist said this sentence !
i fell offended of what you said about "shaterred by evil islam"
ya i'm muslim i don't think it's the best way to say what you think , people will think that islam is an evil religion which is not and also people will think alot of wrong thing on it, by creating new stereotype which is not really helpful for me because people call me terroriste and say it's a jock but i don't think it's funny it's only low knowledge.
can u please erase your comment or change stuff in it like "evil".
@anu123km Ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt was NOT destroyed by religion. That argument is not only incorrect but grossly inaccurate, biased and WRONG! Those civilizations governments were corrupt and the pressures of society, economic factors, outsiders and internal strife is what destroyed them NOT religion and certainly NOT Christianity.
@anu123km Early Christians burned the Great Library of Alexandria, (which was the biggest archive of ancient knowledge in the world) because it was considered pagan knowledge that went against the teachings of the Bible. The christian Roman Emperor at the time did nothing to stop them. Religion is a poisonous human phenomenon that should be rooted out or at least not taken seriously.
@3dwardcullen69 ur correct religion is a poison...Read about Nalanda university of India which was destroyed by Muslims. In fact, I have a video on universities of India destroyed by Muslims. Check that out...
@anu123km I think its easy to lose sight of what is the fact of human civilization, Religion is not bad, good things have been done in the name of relgion, its fundementalism that is bad, When you take religion too far and put it ahead of common sense and human life. So I would have to say that relgion is not evil, fanatasism of faith and relgious causes are.
@3dwardcullen69 I agree with much of what you are saying, but I feel you dont acknowledge the good relgion has brought to our world, so much has been gained and preserved by religion, for example after the fall of rome who preserved its knowledge, answer the christian monks, after the fall of classical alexandria who preserved copied texts and compiled secriets of the ancient world, the muslims it goes on, my point is fundimentalism is the probelm not religion.
@orome21 Religion has not brought much good to our world, but that isn't due to religion itself, the message conveyed by Christ is by all means a "good" one. Christianity for example was a religion that appealed to the poor in the Roman empire. Making the poor and uneducated powerful as they unified under that creed. Unfortunately, it was these same people who often murdered, burned books/ ancient manuscripts in the name of Christ. So I agree, the real problem is interpretation of religion.
Good video, except for the exclusion of the Gracchi brothers and their contribution to land distribution and citizenship for inhabitants of occupied territories that, both paid with their lives.
Good video. If anyone wants to learn more about Roman history, or any other period of history then you can stop by our channel and ask any questions we have, watch our short documentaries or even request a documentary on a topic you're interested in.
this is the best conversation I have come across most people are acutally making great point unlike other videos where all people do is make stupid unintelligent comments. Im actually enjoying reading what intelligent normal mature people have to say
@iuriluca That's too cute! They didn't destroy any civilizations- they conquered and encompassed them into their culture - that's what Romans did- they adapted, and took the best of both worlds, which is what made them stronger. Silly child, tsk, tsk.
@iuriluca Is it? I don't watch Hanna Montana o.O Kind of wierd you know that....Annnnnyway, Humanity IS savage- uh fuckin' der! Of course they destroyed what didn't obey them- everyone does that. Its called "Bullying on a larger scale." What were they supposed to do? Ask nicely? No! They wanted it, you have it, you won't share it, they take it. Its called the mathematics of life, my small one. When you learn of other cultures in history, you will see. Until then, keep hating Rome! :D
Its amazing how long the Roman Empire lasted, from surviving almost total destruction at the hands of Carthage and the Greeks to the Sassanids Persians in the East to the millions strong invasion / forced settlement of barbarians in Europe Curruption Civil War and Bankruptcy and an survivng the introduction of a new religon and surviving Attila the Hun.
@ADZ01982 well they never let a socialist like obama's vagina run the show, only true roman men were allowed to rule, not some indonesian british subject illigal immigrant
@ADZ01982 And much more! Gauls and Goths sacking the Eternal City, civil wars, rebellioins, new ideologies and beliefs! Truly the greatest testament to humanity, representing everything humans are: Leaders, followers, charitable, greedy, intelligent, foolish, wise, ignorant, strategists, and naive persons. If I had to pick any state to represent humanity to an extraterrestrial race, I'd show them the Romans.
Constantine XI the last Roman emperor and the "marble King" , He knew all was lost, he could have packed up and left like a coward, He stood his ground and forced the Ottoman (khazar) Warlord to have to take the Fasces from his cold dead hands, to maintain Roman Honor he bravely stood and fought to the last offering up his life as a sacrifice to inspire later generations to break their shackles and resist.
His Brother Thōmas Palaiologos stayed in Morea , unfortunately some of the Palaiologos defected to the other side.
The Palaiologos made a mistake by agreeing too join the church back in union with the Vatican, It demoralized the people leading many to turn against their own rulers.
It backfired in alienating the laity and factions within the clergy against their own government, Causing many to see surrender to the Turks as preferable too being forced to join the Latin rite church just for the sake of getting help from westerners that they had just as much to fear from as the Turks when it came to unwanted destruction and barbarity, given the fourth crusade and subsequent past attempts to forcibly convert the Byzantines to roman Catholicism..
@Obasiliasfilosofos I am not saying it was a good idea, but I just see why did it, its easy to look back and say it was dumb, they desperately needed to regain territory or Constantinople would fall, which turned out ot be true. If the crusade ever would of come to save Constantinople, then we would think that it was a smart idea. I see both sides of the story.
@Obasiliasfilosofos Also, yes the 4th crusade sucked, it was a waste of life, it gave the Byzantines to the Turks. Also, the 1st Crusade, helped the Empire alot, it regained Nicaea, Smyrna, etc, a lot of their territory in Asia Minor. And, created buffering Crusader States
The autocratic dynastism that formed a defacto-monarchy, That both built the empire and helped to destroy it.
They would have needed to restore the "tribune of the plebes", and end the Qasi-monarchy and have elected emperors who served terms, rather then selection by who came out of the right vaginal.
The 11th century of the Byzantine empire was its last golden age, When it came to the arts and sciences.
@ADZ01982 Was what? Yes, the Byzantines never fully did, but they came close under Emperor Manuel in 1180, but they suffered a repeat of manzikert essentially, at the Battle of Myriokephalon. I personally think that this battle, not Manzikert was the deciding battle in the Romans/Greeks vs the Turks, as Manuel had a large enough army, but it was not employed correctly.
@Apoth3cary I don't think the Byzantines at Manzikert were used to their full advantage- correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there a division in the Romans as they had a contingency of their forces foraging for food when the Turks engaged? But I have never heard of the Battle of Myriokephalon - I'll have to look it up.
@RogueRaven17 Manzikert did have an element of divided leadership. That division is what killed the Roman Empire all through its existence from 27B-1453. The Roman political system greatly rewarded those who could win a civil war. So civil wars and political rivalries allowed people like Turks and Crusaders to pick apart the Empire.
you know what i want? i want to live forever starting 50 million years ago, to shape empires and raise armys, to see the world devolope, to see how my world today came to be and what tomarrow will bring. imagine, if you could start at the begining, and watch as humans build and destroy, create and inspire, all as it actually happened. tell me that isnt a dream that anyone would want? even if i had no power to change history, being there to experiance it would be the greatest honor i know.
@BrugesFan23 would it though? if you knew nothing of anything you have now when you were to start at the begining, wouldnt every experiance be new? and besides, you would get to see how human's and thier ancesters actually evolved. you never know, we could have it all wrong. whats a more definitive way to prove your theroy than being there yourself? and besides, im sure if you lived 60 million +years a single year would seem more like a long day.
@neverhoodyn i dont think so. being the first human would define the world human. and besides it has never been done before, so how would anyone know what would happen?
The Romans were the greatest civilization builders in all of history, even to this day...there's no doubt about it. Considering we owe so much to them now, it's really amazing how such a powerful culture could've died out.
@iorixs The Goths were fleeing from the Huns, around what today is Romania, so they came west to Roman territories seeking safe haven. The Romans offered them lands to settle in, if the Goth army would serve Rome. So the Goths accepted, but the Romans never gave them lands, and made the Goths fight for Rome nearly as slaves. That is why they rebelled against Rome and eventually sacked it. Eventually, some 12 or so years later, the Goths were given their land in what today is western France.
@biggee316 theoderic became emperor of the western empire in rivenna or whatever it's called. his mausoleum still stands there. there was an equestrian statue there too of him but it was destroyed during the french revolution. i read that upgraded roads and did other public works to continue the civilizing influence that the roman institutions had on people
@iorixs Theodoric was never emperor. He ruled italy as patrician under.... zeno, i think it was, of constantinople, who saw no need for any abritrary western colleague.
@sherkbite3839 oh. ok. thanks Theodoric was ostensibly only a viceroy for the emperor in Constantinople. In reality, he was able to avoid imperial supervision, and dealings between the emperor and Theodoric were as equals.
@Barbarian337 , I was in BELLA ROMA in 2007 and for me it felt as if I had come home. I had this magic time crawling over all the Seven Hills of Rome. If the pennies allow me I am returning to this magic place.
That's how the Holy Roman empire was basically built up.Little by little 'till it became the most powerful empire in Europe. It's a continuation of the Roman empire but with the church at its center.
The Holy Roman empire tried to unite Europe with just one government back then but it didn't succeed that well.Perhaps, nowadays they'll be able to succeed with the EU and Germany on its tail, they'll get it right this time around.
@defdakilla41 You are so right @boyjay4utube, it was not an Empire. I t was a collection of Frankish, Germanic states and Northern Italy. It was the prestige that attracted many to wear the Imperium. It was neither, holy, roman or an empire. It lasted from Christmas Day, 800, when Charlemagne is crowned by the Pope, until the last Holy Roman Emperor Francis II 1806.
The german mercenaries took control of Italy in 476 not the Ostrogoths. The Ostrogoths invaded Italy in 489 and they captured Ravenna in 493. Theodorik killed Odoacer and became king of Italy.

Why does everyone think has ended? 330 AD the capital moved from Rome to Constantinople. They replaced the name of someone called Caesar to a someone called Pope, as it was easier to control the masses by faith rather than by sword. In 1945 it moved to Washington D.C. Hasn't anyone seen what Washington resembles yet?
marvingo49 11 months ago
@marvingo49 Powerful people usually don't get the results they want even when they are able to operate openly with wide public support, so it is absurd to suppose that any group can control things secretly. Human society is just too complex to be put in harness. History is just a lot of half-botched plans and muddling through. No one is really in charge.

If so...he must be a pretty wicked devil.
marvingo49 11 months ago
@marvingo49 God the father that Christians worship is the true God not Jesus(pbuh). Its a yes and no answer. The early Christians worshiped God alone and did not associate partners with him nor sons and daughters. To them Jesus(pbuh) was a prophet send by God just as Moses and Abraham(peace be upon them) were. Christianity was changed later on by Roman Emperor Constantine and added the Trinity lies. It kinda suits their pagan beliefs.
blaqsoldier 11 months ago
Rome persecuted the true Chirstians early in Christian era. They killed them mercilessly and guess what Christianity increased in number despite all the persecution. The Romans changed their tactics and adopted Christianity. They changed the religion to suit their pagan religion. Thats why God send the last prophet Muhammad(pbuh) a mercy for mankind. The Roman's never vanished, they changed their tactics, thats all. Now The Americans are the new Rome. They have the same system as Rome..

Nurglegurgle 10 months ago
@Nurglegurgle The USA is obviously an influential Empire, but I don't think it will be able to compare with the Roman Empire. The historians of the future will decide this. The Roman Empire lasted 500 years, and if we include the Roman Republic as well it was a millennium. Let's see how long USA will last. My personal opinion is that it won't surpass 300 years.
panarkas 10 months ago
@panarkas Look at side compareing rome and america ....How many enemies rome have and how many america? Rome was fighting wars on all sides..(attack and defense). And in list of rome enemies there was Carthaginians strong same as romans and they have better fleet in the begining Rome did not have any ships in first punic war. Gauls, Barbarian tribes from Germania and other states. Atila the hun. Roman war on edge of destruction lots of time but they survive. Lastly they destroy themselves.
Saturnclass 10 months ago
@Saturnclass Fighting wars on all sides is stupidity. Hitler tried to do the same, and his kingdom fell apart. America is in a lot of wars now. We have our nose in almost everyone's business. You can't expect wars to be the same as they used to be. We have airplanes now.
faveology 9 months ago
@faveology
The question was can america fight war against Russia, Europe, itd and last for 1000 years. And when i say wars i mean real fighting not political war. Yeah Hitler is nice example. Also Rome is other example of destruction from inside.
Saturnclass 9 months ago
@panarkas Imagine america fighting war against russia, europe and somebody else ...how long will they last.
Saturnclass 10 months ago
@Saturnclass That's also correct. The Roman Empire had to face many more threats and enemies. The USA haven't been invaded by everyone to see how they would react. Also they can't be proud about land conquests as they took most of their land by committing a mass genocide against the natives, taking advantage of the fact they had European gunpowder in their disposal while the natives didn't. They even bought a big part of their lands from France, Spain and Russia.
panarkas 10 months ago
@Saturnclass To be honest, I think someone would launch a nuke. I can't really see a super power, such as the United States, going down without using their whole arsenal of weapons. Moreover, I don't think all of Europe would attack the US. We have strong relations with the UK. We also have strong relations with Israel, which doesn't fuck around. Europe really isn't a threat. Russia would be a bigger threat than all of Europe combined.
faveology 9 months ago
@panarkas I think the Roman Republic may also be included as Empire, especially if we're comparing it to the US. Now 750bc to 1806 ad gives 2556 years. Remember, it's an article of faith the Rome was always one.
gamesbok 9 months ago
@panarkas I think it will last longer th an 300 years. We have been around for almost 300 years now. Besides, the world is a different place now. We all have weapons that can completely destroy a whole country. I think America will change from democracy, however, I don't think America will die as an empire.
faveology 9 months ago
@faveology Your logic is right but I wasn't implying that USA will collapse after a full scale war with Russia or China. In my opinion USA will fall from the inside and with a confluence from the South. I believe the possibility for a 3rd world war or a nuclear war is minimal, the dispute between the world's top powers will keep focused in other fields. I agree with you about Europe not being a threat for anyone, I expect them to be even weaker and more dependent to others in the coming years.

SocratesTheGadfly 6 months ago
@anu123km Early Christians burned the Great Library of Alexandria, (which was the biggest archive of ancient knowledge in the world) because it was considered pagan knowledge that went against the teachings of the Bible. The christian Roman Emperor at the time did nothing to stop them. Religion is a poisonous human phenomenon that should be rooted out or at least not taken seriously.
3dwardcullen69 4 months ago
@3dwardcullen69 ur correct religion is a poison...Read about Nalanda university of India which was destroyed by Muslims. In fact, I have a video on universities of India destroyed by Muslims. Check that out...
anu123km 4 months ago
@anu123km I think its easy to lose sight of what is the fact of human civilization, Religion is not bad, good things have been done in the name of relgion, its fundementalism that is bad, When you take religion too far and put it ahead of common sense and human life. So I would have to say that relgion is not evil, fanatasism of faith and relgious causes are.
orome21 4 months ago
@3dwardcullen69 I agree with much of what you are saying, but I feel you dont acknowledge the good relgion has brought to our world, so much has been gained and preserved by religion, for example after the fall of rome who preserved its knowledge, answer the christian monks, after the fall of classical alexandria who preserved copied texts and compiled secriets of the ancient world, the muslims it goes on, my point is fundimentalism is the probelm not religion.
orome21 4 months ago
@orome21 Religion has not brought much good to our world, but that isn't due to religion itself, the message conveyed by Christ is by all means a "good" one. Christianity for example was a religion that appealed to the poor in the Roman empire. Making the poor and uneducated powerful as they unified under that creed. Unfortunately, it was these same people who often murdered, burned books/ ancient manuscripts in the name of Christ. So I agree, the real problem is interpretation of religion.

True, he did not flee to the Morea(Peloponnese), where the Empire continued for a few more years
Apoth3cary 1 year ago
@Apoth3cary
His Brother Thōmas Palaiologos stayed in Morea , unfortunately some of the Palaiologos defected to the other side.
The Palaiologos made a mistake by agreeing too join the church back in union with the Vatican, It demoralized the people leading many to turn against their own rulers.
Obasiliasfilosofos 1 year ago
@Obasiliasfilosofos I do know this, but many Emperors tried to union with the vatican, they needed help against the Turks very badly
Apoth3cary 1 year ago
@Apoth3cary
Obasiliasfilosofos 1 year ago
@Obasiliasfilosofos I am not saying it was a good idea, but I just see why did it, its easy to look back and say it was dumb, they desperately needed to regain territory or Constantinople would fall, which turned out ot be true. If the crusade ever would of come to save Constantinople, then we would think that it was a smart idea. I see both sides of the story.
Apoth3cary 1 year ago
@Obasiliasfilosofos Also, yes the 4th crusade sucked, it was a waste of life, it gave the Byzantines to the Turks. Also, the 1st Crusade, helped the Empire alot, it regained Nicaea, Smyrna, etc, a lot of their territory in Asia Minor. And, created buffering Crusader States
Apoth3cary 1 year ago
The autocratic dynastism that formed a defacto-monarchy, That both built the empire and helped to destroy it.
They would have needed to restore the "tribune of the plebes", and end the Qasi-monarchy and have elected emperors who served terms, rather then selection by who came out of the right vaginal.
The 11th century of the Byzantine empire was its last golden age, When it came to the arts and sciences.
Obasiliasfilosofos 1 year ago
@Obasiliasfilosofos The 12th century was a great cultural revival for the Byzantines, as well a military one.
Apoth3cary 1 year ago
@Apoth3cary Was it ? Byzantine military never recovered from the defeat at Mankziret.
ADZ01982 1 year ago
@ADZ01982 Was what? Yes, the Byzantines never fully did, but they came close under Emperor Manuel in 1180, but they suffered a repeat of manzikert essentially, at the Battle of Myriokephalon. I personally think that this battle, not Manzikert was the deciding battle in the Romans/Greeks vs the Turks, as Manuel had a large enough army, but it was not employed correctly.
Apoth3cary 1 year ago
@Apoth3cary I don't think the Byzantines at Manzikert were used to their full advantage- correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there a division in the Romans as they had a contingency of their forces foraging for food when the Turks engaged? But I have never heard of the Battle of Myriokephalon - I'll have to look it up.
RogueRaven17 1 year ago
@RogueRaven17 Manzikert did have an element of divided leadership. That division is what killed the Roman Empire all through its existence from 27B-1453. The Roman political system greatly rewarded those who could win a civil war. So civil wars and political rivalries allowed people like Turks and Crusaders to pick apart the Empire.
Apoth3cary 1 year ago

@iorixs The Goths were fleeing from the Huns, around what today is Romania, so they came west to Roman territories seeking safe haven. The Romans offered them lands to settle in, if the Goth army would serve Rome. So the Goths accepted, but the Romans never gave them lands, and made the Goths fight for Rome nearly as slaves. That is why they rebelled against Rome and eventually sacked it. Eventually, some 12 or so years later, the Goths were given their land in what today is western France.

The Holy Roman empire tried to unite Europe with just one government back then but it didn't succeed that well.Perhaps, nowadays they'll be able to succeed with the EU and Germany on its tail, they'll get it right this time around.
