@artistshmartest - That must have been what the trucker was on when he ran head-on into my uncle's car and killed himself, my uncle, aunt, and new born cousin. Still, it's a beautiful song.
@gal5131 That is so sad, sweetie. I really feel for you. My mothers whole life was pretty well totaled by a car accident, as she never fully recovered, even after numerous operations. Everyone knows a gun is dangerous, but vehicles really can be, as well. Bless you and your family, dear ...
Written by Lowell George, produced by Peter Asher, whom also produced many songs by her, James Taylor, Carly Simon and Carole King. The song "Heart Like A Wheel", off of the album of the same title, topped at #1for three weeks in February 1975. Emmylou Harris on harmony vocals and Don Henley on drums, backing vocals. Album certified 5x platinum since release in 1974.
I'm not a fan of the country music, before it hated, but listening to voices like these (linda rondstadt / shania twain) I started to change my point of view regarding the country music... really really good
When I first heard this song I was outside nagales AZ It was early morning and I had left Wichester Va on Thurday and it was Saturday mornin and I thought i there ever was a song for the long hauler this was dam shure one of them those where the day when trucks and the drivers ran hard and fast the Loads where heavy and pay was light 22 cents a mile for a lot of us Trucking was fun then the road was Like family Fuel was 32 cents a gallon and the truck stops where like wild west towns great days
i seen my pretty alice and then we had a light. utah topeka with gary... tahatchapee with tom and bob! been listening to this wonderful tune by miss linda for decades now, i guess i was a little wrong on some of the lyrics i'd say! linda still does this song the best... like every other cover she's done in her career! love you, linda!
Not that it's really that big of a deal or even really matters, but does anyone know which Tonopah the song is referring to, Tonopah, AZ or Tonopah, NV? My guess is that it's Tonopah, NV because on Wikipedia it says that Tonopah, AZ is currently still unincorporated as a community.
@superhornet69 I'm going with AZ, because I know it as a truck stop town along an interstate (I-10, about 94 miles east of the CA border), whereas the town in NV is really off the beaten path for truckers. There are a couple of exits marked Tonopah AZ...the one a little farther east of Exit 94 has a full service truck stop with the customary all night eatery, where I've sat and overheard the truckers chowing down at the next table describing how they blew through the weigh stations, etc.....

I saw her walk on stage and sing this with Lowell George at a Little Feat concert in Lisner Auditorium in Washington DC, sometime in the early-mid 70's. Wow was that good.
This whole album by Linda was one of the greatest in rock history--early folk-rock before they even realized what they were creating. Linda, the Eagles, Jackson Browne and later Byrds stuff. It was great being there
Kenny Edwards is playing bass and singing harmony with Linda on this cut. Kenny and Linda were in the Stone Poneys together. He passed away last month - great musician!
I watched The Abyss on HBO recently, and remember hearing this. From what I remember, it was "source" music. Usually background music coming from a nearby radio, juke-box, etc., as opposed to a featured piece of music. That's usually why it won't make it onto the soundtrack...
LOVE the line Dallas Alice. On that new tv show Happy Town the guy's boat is named Dallas Alice. ?????? Could they be this cool or is it just an accident.
Funny how the young people associate this song with the movie Abyss, while us seasoned music afficianados remember Linda and this incredible song like it came out yesterday. Love you Linda!
Well it's like this, it is each to their own how they come across music which for my case half the music I'm familiar with is from movies. Then again I'm not a music afficianado so my knowledge of music won't be as broad as others. However, since watching Abyss I have a few albums from Linda Ronstadt. That's how it usually goes.
I listened to Linda Ronstadt's Greatest hits religiously when i was 7 years old and still know every word to every song - I love Linda Ronstadt and always will -
@sphmusak Seasoned music aficionado here who didn't know about Ronstadt. Kinda being a bit douchey, don't you think? Also, the Abyss came out in 89, not all who watched the movie are "Young".
She said in '75 that her two musical "gurus" were Warren Zevon and Lowell George. At the time I thought I knew something about artists and such. I started listening. I grew.
What a great song, I'd forgotten that I'd first heard Ronstadt's version all those years ago. I've been playing it on my gitar lately using the Little Feat version. Visit my You Tube Channel: The Affluent Artist.
I heard this song on the DVD of The Abyss and I was hooked. Pappygrayowl said it best Linda's sweet, lonesome voice is what does it for me. Great song and a great scene - One Night, Hippy and Bud singing along. Everything about that scene just makes me smile, but Linda's rendition is the glue that holds it together.
from reading these comments it looks like someone else sang this song at some point or another. but honestly, i dont give a damn. all i know is they played Linda's version in The Abyss which got me hooked to the song and when i finally found this, it made my day. tho not as much as the trucker by comparison, but still i find that this song is without a doubt the best song to play on a bad day to cheer me up or for the last song to hear before i crash. calms the mind greatly. thanks
There are a lot of people who discovered L.G. and Little Feat because of Linda's beautiful version. She even sang with them on the song "Voices On The Wind" (Post L.G. comeback) L.R. and The Feat were and are friends and fellow admirers of each other's work. That's why she did the song. We are all here because we love the song so please no fighting. Let's be glad and rejoice together in the fact that hip hop hasn't completely taken over. everything.
I'm a trucker and its a great song no matter who sings it. But when I'm alone on the road, I prefer Linda's sweet, lonesome voice. But that's just me being an old, lonesome truck driver. Thanks for having it here, you made my day.
whatever man. This version has its own merits. Of course the Feat is the better rendition, but we already knew that and don't need to hear it from some dude that just got into the Feat.
yeah i saw your comment on another video about how you just got into the feat. now you wanna run over here and put down LR's version and show everyone how knowledgeable you are about music. sad really.
I am glad to have the right to say whatever I feel about artistic expression, regardless of whatever you (or anyone else) think the "appropriate" level of connoisseurship may be- thank you very much.
Exactly right ugadawgs1331, the wonderful Lowell George and Little Feat. I've always liked LR's version too. And the seque from When Will I Be Loved into Willin is a real nice one, you bet! She did a great job with All That You Dream too. Great performance.
For those of you that aren't aware, this is one of the defining Lowell George/Little Feat tunes. On Linda's "Heart Like a Wheel" there is a wonderfully simple segue from "When Will I Be Loved" into "Willin." The Feat have versions on their first album "Little Feat" and on "Sailing Shoes." It is 2008 and I still miss Lowell like it was yesterday. Lowell, Stevie Ray, Brother Duane...what might have been, but I'm so thankful for what each of them left us.
The scene you refer to in the movie The Abyss was never released in the theatrical version, it's part of the Director's Cut/Special Edition that was released on DVD (which is the superior version if you ask me). That's probably why it's not on the soundtrack. :)

Great song and great performance by the wonderful Linda. But don't miss the definitive version of this song by Little Feat on their album "Sailin' Shoes."

"Whites" are amphetamines (speed) usually benzedrine or dexadrine and were used by truckers to stay awake.
Darvon is a CIV opiate pain reliever.
