Fascinating, so glad to hear someone is working on this film! The brotherhoods efforts spread the psychedelic gospel far and wide. I was lucky enough to get in on the tail end of good acid in the early 1970's.
first off they stole acid from an actor and thats how they even got started, then owsley made it, then sand and owsley's trainee scully made it in 67. that still wasn't the brotherhood and what sand and scully manufactured were left over precursors from the 40's. making acid fresh for a generation that was ultimatly confused. all the old people weren't even there it was like a little piggy fuckfest....and then you all doubt stark because he stole the vintage stuff and ran a smear campaign fuall
I knew Johnny Gale. He's dead now. He got shot in the Hondoras Islands. Rainbow surfboards is what we brought hash back to the states in. Man that was another life time ago.
Orange sunshine was an excellent trip, I did have some better acid, but I gotta say that after 1000 trips on double barrel, it was really my favorite. I remember taking my driving test after droppin 2 hits, I mean I think I remember. "Have you seen the stars tonight"
do you remember Willy Minzie? he used to hold marajuana services up on hippy hill in the park. he would walk down Haight St on Sunday morning with his peace sign holding his stuffed rabbit followed by his congregation. last i heard of Willy he was indignantly incarcerated in SLO. peace
All the people out there who think that there is'nt any good LSD around now should look out for albert hofmann blotters, they are as good as anything there has ever been.
Thanks for the video. I took a lot of orange barrel from all over the southern California region. It was always a powerful and clean trip. There was alot of superb "Windowpane" acid available. Now I'm an old man with liver disease. Good luck people.
yeah orange barrell was the worst acid recipe, body trip radical hangover bad recipe, potent yes , but sheeit. I had way mo betta before and after, window pane was good, the blotter acid these days you needd three or four of them.
untrue, the strength of blotter acid is impossible to determine until you eat it. some shit takes a couple hits to get going, sometimes one will completely melt your face.
Way back in the very early 1970s I lived in South TX and was introduced to weed, acid and opium. Cocaine was not a a word you heard unless in a anti-drug movie in school. Mexican weed was cheap and cool - bastards who grow and sell their $designer$ hand pruned "nuggets" are basically greedy capitalist fucks.
The first acid I ate was purple haze, then we got orange sunshine and orange barrels. That was some real shit compared to blotter or dots. It all came from out west.
CIA, ONI, the military, just like everything else about the 60's including the best bands and music? I hope you cover that side of it as well? The Brotherhood is like a give away going back to the other brotherhoods? Manufactured by other powers not seen? To discredit the serious anti-war movement as well as to create a new future drug war against working people...
the canyon still has the vibe, what a cool thing that happened back then. having been born in '72 and living now in the canyon for over a decade, i can relate to all these characters. pics. of my folks from that time look right out of this film trailer. i found out about orange sunshine from cactus bob out at brook street the other day as he introduced me to his high school buddy: they graduated lbhs in '69 and had heavy stories of the time. many stories abt the brotherhood still around-luv it!
I was at the Laguna Canyon Festival and remember the sunshine cards the Brotherhood dropped from the plane. I got lost in the crowd when I was peaking. A frightening experience that I vividly remember to this day. I made all sorts of promises to all sorts of powers to help me get through including never getting high again. 38 years later? HAH! By the way, I was 14 years old...
Hey everyone, thanks for the interest! As you can imagine, a project like this is a huge undertaking to do it properly ie leaving no stone unturned. We are hoping to have it finished by the end of this year for next, the 40th anniversary of 1969.
Very nice...has this come out yet??? My first LSD experience was in 1969 and it was Orange Sunshine. I was a teenager in the midwest. Don't know if it was from the Brothers or not (supposedly was), but it was very powerful, deep, and very moving. Nothing since has compared. The experience partly made me and my friends who we are today. Many thanks.
Seriously - to the poster, who looks to be the the film's creator - *please* let us know some sort of est. date for this release. I can't wait to see this. :)

Hey gang, im 42 so too young to have been involved in such a wonderous time in history but im facinated and hungry for any knowledge on this stuff. i read lots of leary and huxley etc and thankyou for this wonderfull post. peace to you xxx
If any of you posting comments claiming to have been in the Valley during the Brotherhood may be interested to know that I am the son of Josh Hanson and Gina Parker. They were key players in the Brotherhood, i am not going to give details, but if you were a part for real you know the names.
Yea , Orange county was a fun place in the seventies......Rainbow Ted and characters on the main beach playing music and swinging gelatins all day long..what a time and place to be a teen....
Are you legit? I just googled your dad's name and see he's the guy who arrested Timothy Leary. Crazy stuff. So how'd your dad bust him and did he say what Leary said when he was busted?
That's nothing of which one be proud. Well, maybe you could be proud of being associated with Leary's court case that invalidated the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937. I'd get a legal name change rather than be publicly associated with Purcell.
I find it interesting that a group of "kids" could synthesize such a complex and incredibly beautiful drug. Some of the largest pharmeceutical companies in the world screw up when they try to make a cholesterol reducing drug and these "kids" make a product that thousands ingest and there are no problems beyond the usual "flashbacks".It seems like these "kids" manufactured a quality product under adverse conditions!
I just read about Tim Scully after reading your comment. What a fascinating guy. Apparently he's working on a book about the LSD movement. This film looks awesome by the way.
The Brotherhood was a huge organization after a while. They had "riders" who drove all over the US on motorcycles for distribution. There were a lot of these guys in Taos, New Mexico and on the communes. They were known to be carrying large amounts of cash and always had great acid from California.
My college room mate in 1972 made a trip out West over spring break. He returned with a baggie full of Orange Sunshine tabs, said they came via U of N Mex. Should have sold my soul and bought half the bag.

my mom was one of the lucky ones.she was lucky enough to have taken some orange sunshine back in the day.along with some acid and a hashbrownie...ALL @ THE SAME TIME!dman she was cool. :D
I had only one LSD trip in '77 the day I turned 18. I'll never forget it. I want to find souls to talk to about what was learned and experienced in LSD trips. This overall culture now seems to lack in positive new explorations and a sense of wonder.
Good stuff. I have known many many people who have told me about it happening, or told me they were in the brotherhood themselves, but I came there in '79 and was only 10 at that time, so growing up there I really never knew the entire history of all that, those scenes of the canyon back in those days are killer. And that shot of #1 (the waver) in his semi-youth is priceless.
Glad to know the whole story, can,t wait for the movie.
Good stuff, one side of the story. The other side if this is about the brotherhood was about finding God within themselves with the use of LSD. We would go out into the woods by a river, with a group of spiritual travelers take a dose, we would lie down go within ourselves and have an experience of being one with everything and everyone. We learned about living within this world of karma and learning how to care and love our fellow man.
Yeah and learning to listen to our inner self, learn from our mistakes, becoming human beings as we were intended to be in God's Love.
Timothy wasn't a member of the brotherhood a good friend yes not a member nothing to do with making Sunshine that was all the Brotherhood and 2nd stringers. We wanted everyone to get high and find God within themselves. They got the best pot and harsh because the better it was the clearer the message So they had to smuggle it into the country.
