  • no need for the warning regarding comments, since only those of good taste would view/listen to Japan

  • such a great version, thanks

  • Wow. Fell in love with David Bowie in 2010.

Falling in love with David Sylvian in 2011 (almost 2012 now!)

I can certainly see the similarities, but Sylvian has a voice all his own. I find myself crashing hard for him and the band Japan. Damn! I KNEW I should never have bought that vinyl "Gentlemen Take Polaroids". Japan is great and now I'm desperately hooked on Sylvian! Not again! *Sighs*

  • @catgirl1234 keep on discovering this old stuff, we enjoyed it so much back in the 80's and it brings back so many good memories

  • wow, what beautiful lirics, touches youre heart and soul, the music is from another planet!! i love this sad lonley song, a song full of ghosts and deciet and hate, but with promise,x, i hope to be at that place, no dissapointments, no let downs, no thinking i give in!! being strong and surviving each hurdle that kicks you in the teeth, xx

  • @freshborn66 Its just a song.

  • I loved Japan and David's voice : )

  • christ i wish they would kill the bleeding adverts

  • sick of the top comment now,!! gravy and chop, are we on masterchef?? this song from the moment its played, grasps you in its clutches!! and when david sings, its theartre on a top scale,x love everything about this song, the music the lrics the drama, the truith!! forget the menu!! haunted visions, and drama, need more of this,xx love it xxxxxxxxxxx

  • @freshborn66 does your head in man doesnt it.

  • I see one of the comments of Japan being way ahead of their time....I remember a former friend of mine who sadly is no longer alive saying the same thing and this is so true...........

  • "I really like it!" by one of HK's people

  • Such an amazing array of tallent, it's a real shame that Rain Tree Crow was their final testament. RIP Mick Karn.

  • Japan was WAY ahead of the times! Gary Numan, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Thompson Twins etc. all followed these guys with the Electronica style. GREAT BAND!!

  • Truly one of the most ground breaking electronic records even made. A perfect and timeless classic.

  • great song

i love it with the Deftones too (:

  • It's hard to believe such a sophisticated song like this got to #5 in the UK single charts. Pop music seems to become simpler and simpler as the years go by, which is a shame.

  • I was at this concert it was amazing truly

  • These niggers is awesome.

  • nice and haunting.

  • japan split at the top of their game what a pity

  • Gives me the shivers every time. Incredible.

  • @Minijohnny agree - I've had this album for many years and it just has a way of getting under my skin

  • first single i ever bought in the early eighty's, still fantastic!

  • Simply great!

  • That is such a lovely song. Stands the test of time unlike so much 80s music. And Sylvian's contemporary stuff is pretty excellent too.

  • Deftones cover of this song does it justice.

  • ghostly speach, and voices from afar, this is this song!! david you made the blood inside me weep? i love this track, like a newborn? one of my favorate meaninfuill tracks of all time, japan you make me feel real, keep me feeling real xxx

  • this is the good shit buddy

  • this video would be more appealing to post, if it didn't have the paranoid headline about comments. great version. please remove the insecurity about deleting. you can always delete such comments anyhow, so no need to put that there.

    thank you

  • the best , love this , amazing and fresh as ever

  • Japan wprowadził kolor lat 80. I zniknął... a potem z tego kolorytu skorzystały inne kapele i poszalały z barwnością ;)

  • @1000Ninth W Polsce tamte lata byly wyjatkowo ponure, stan wojenny, puste sklepy itd. Czy zespol Japan byl wtedy znany nad Wisla?

  • I like gravy on my ice cream.

  • i think of something to say but everything is perfect in this song

  • I'm going to agree with freshborn66 ..what on God's Holy earth are you thinking? And why are you second comment from the top?

  • saw these in 82 - still awesome

  • Aaaaaaah the 80s

  • the beatles, !! what the hell are you doing in top comments? true fans of this song cant even get in?

  • Don`t be stupid..why bring The Beatles into it? That`s like comparing gravy and icecream... I like gravy on my chops and icecream on my banana..What`s your point missleslie66? What are you comparing??

  • @DaMan1964 Excellent retort my man

  • sounds like roxy music

  • Cuando la escucho aún me sorprende que tuviera tantoéxito.

    David Sylvian,1993

  • This song was sampled by Goldie(drum and bass) for VIP Riders Ghost and Ghosts of My Life

  • @Ruthypops1 funny that

  • @DjChoci Funny in what way?!

  • I was utterly baffled when I first heard this record and then I was in love with Sylvian and the others for about eight years afterwards as a dumb teenager

  • had the privellage to see them live, this is an absoulute brilliant record, well done japan, and david youre exquisite, hope this year sees more artists like you? i doubt it though, youre a one off xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • I was in the second row at this gig, amazing will never forget it.

  • This song singularly changed my life for the better.

  • Japan is WAY better than all the singers of 2day!!!

  • too much for a funeral song. folk would think you were half daft. pity, cos it would make the perfect one!

  • awsome band ..way ahead of their tme.

  • @TheAtamikdog - and they epitomized the essence of that time, early 80s, before the stupidity flooded in, increasingly after '86

  • this is my song, today i`m old and ugly, but a thousend years ago i have had dreams of beeing strong and invinsible, and then...nada de este mierda es mi culpa, pero yo tengo pagar todo.La vida no valle nada.Preguntas?

  • Awesome group, sisters got every song they ever made including imports...

  • loved this song many years ago the the cobwebs came now later in life i reolize how great this track was, i saw them live and they were brill in edinbrugh, now i think of this song, and i can say im a ghost of my life

  • Blast from the past....superb!!!

  • Music of my youth......awesome...thanks

  • Just heard this on the radio having never heard it before. It sounds good even by modern standards. Very haunting and unique.

  • remastered audio? Sounds fantastic

  • When I first heard David Sylvian sing and his music albums after this... I thought he was brilliant... 28 years later, I still do! Especially with Ryuchi Sakamoto! One of the saddest songs I know is his Night Porter...

  • what a brilliant song, saw the band years ago, davids voice makes this song, rip mick, xx , great memories

  • this band makes teh beatles look HORRIBLE!!!!!! :) vote up if u agree!!:)

  • @missleslie66 Love this song but have to DISAGREE!!!!!!

  • Makes me cry...loved it back then, love it now.

It is such an ethereal homage to Japan ( the nation ).

I want Japan to feel better soon. They do not deserve this suffering.

  • The most amazIng song, the most angelic voice and the most beautiful face.

  • I though it was bieber appearing in 0:32

  • @WeeniebeenieFunnykid I switched off at 0:31 thanks for the heads up lol.

  • Suddenly the local boozer turned into a stainless steel and glass montrousity, selling cocktails, full of dicks in stupid suits, and you couldn't get in unless your fucking shoes were Italian!

  • @SvenTviking

I could say the same thing about a once -homely boozer in Rochester, Kent. It's sad when they end up looking more like hair salons than pubs.

  • This and Vienna were the two best things to come out of the New Romantics. The rest was utter shite listened to by utter wankers. It was those bastards who put fucking bouncers on the door of your local!

  • Mick Khan - RIP

  • @profbarkingmad mick KARN

  • His voice is amazing, rare talent.

  • i think david sylvian has the best voice of the world!

    if thats fine .. i just want to keep this song alive. ;__;

  • f**king ace dude

  • God Bless you Mick .. you've been an inspiration. RIP

  • RIP mick rest in bass playing heaven X

  • pretentious comedy but unusual at the time. one of em just died.

  • I think I remember Japan being banned from radio and TV back in the 80s anyone know why

  • This was recorded at the London Hammersmith Odeon in November 1982. The album Oil on Canvas came out in June 1983.

  • This song used to make me go all Kate Bush. I was 18/19 now im 46. Help, i want to cry, what happened to all the years, I want my innocence back! Love this song, all the feelings rush back.

  • @Annaliese247 dito

  • @Annaliese247

yeah. reminds me of school, being skint, ten fags, art class, chilly winters and cassettes. now? makes me glad I was around to enjoy it!

  • @Annaliese247 Gewoon proberen "wilder than before" te zijn girl!

  • @Annaliese247

makes the hairs stand up on the back of your neck it is sooo good

  • The singer was definitely influenced by Brian Ferry of Roxy Music in my opinion.

  • RIP Mick Karn, a true bassist !

  • Rest In Peace Mick Karn

  • RIP Mick Karn

  • Awesome.

  • want this played at my funeral

  • @dancemother i had it played at my funeral.

  • @deancook07 are you suggesting you are on youtube in your afterlife?

  • absouloutely brilliant from chantelle..

  • So did i , i couldnt agree more !

Oil On Canvass , classic album !!

  • This was recorded at the London Hammersmith Odeon in November 1982. The album Oil on Canvas came out in June 1983.

  • @ajs41 Exactly! That´s why i wrote 83. :)

  • @biladd Ghosts is from Tin Drum.

  • @nakedmambo I meant the video, not the song. ;)

  • @nakedmambo ...and Tin Drum was released in '81

  • Heard this on the Jeremy VIne show a couple of days ago.I was just galvanised.I couldn`t wait to hear it again. It`s absolutely unique and unforgettable, and should be re-released.WOW!!!!

  • Good song. The Deftones recently did a tribute to this song, i believe it's a special track off the latest album. While not the same, it is a good tribute nonetheless.

  • @Psychowilly its crap.The deftones version i mean.

  • First heard this today on BBC Leeds while sitting in a car in the wind by someone's house up on a hill, was completely deserted. This fitted so perfectly with the surroundings it was just unreal. Beautiful song.

  • haunting

  • OH bugger nearly 30 years old?? Oh shit I am getting old

  • @realaleforme Yeah, oh bugger. Fast rewind 29 years. Japan's Ghosts kind of creeped me out on the old Walkman in 1981, such beauty and misery, hadn't heard anything like this before or since. Fast forward 30 years from 2010..... hmmm, may well be a ghost by then.

Or, at best, bones in the mud! A bit mind expanding, like Time Machine, the H G Wells scripted film from 1960. Albeit with a more limited time span! All the best.

  • i`d forgotten how cool this band really were, david is jus the best front man any group could ever wish for - backed by unique musicians carving a memorable path through a wonderful stage of english music ..... i believe mick karn is not in the best of health .... keep going lad.

  • grandissima atmosfera.....

  • beautiful haunting song

  • I have to agree timeless music and such "apt" lyrics-sure these were wrote for me!!! But that is the past now-"Now I am KING"

  • Lyrics reflect man's battle with life.

  • loved it then as i love it now :) xXx

  • these dudes before duran duran try to steal the fire.

  • Lovely song, great voice, handsome man!

  • Love this song so much. :D

  • Timeless, unique music and so utterly haunting.

  • Join my group Japan on facebook ive only 7 members if you are interested its as group pic David is i the front thanks

  • Good song but not really much going on. Quiet Life and Visions of China are much more energetic.

  • Music now just cannot compare at all!

  • Absolutely Great!!!

  • une merveille ce titre

  • Music from the future made in the past lost in the present

  • @ZJProz AMEN to that brother !! couldn have put it better myself and can apply to a lot of bands from the 80's unlike a lot the so called music today

  • @ZJProz Crystallizes my thoughts eloquently.

  • @ZJProz Japan could have easily become just another New Romantic band but, as with Paul Weller and Damen Allbarn, their quality spears through time. Can pick up on their work, anytime.

Don't wanna sound an old fuddy-duddy but are there any current "artists" that will ever be able to claim the same?

Thanks a lot Simon Cowell et al.

  • @5ebD I think there are plenty of current "artists" that will eventually claim the same.

  • Experimental music at its finest! Excellent stuff.
